It looks very likely that the Democrats and left-leaning Republicans in the House and Senate will pass a bill granting at least partial amnesty to illegal immigrants this month. While the passage of such a measure would undoubtedly be a victory for the left, I believe it would be something of a Pyrrhic victory which would greatly improve the chances of many conservative candidates in 2008. While it is not clear that the passage of an amnesty bill would create an immediate backlash from voters, there are many reasons to believe that such a step would create significant changes in the political landscape that might benefit conservative Republicans.

I have heard several anti-gun activists intimate that lax gun control laws are partly to blame for the shooting at Virginia Tech. As it turns out, exactly the opposite is true. An article at One News Now points out that several school shootings have been successfully interrupted by law-abiding citizens with concealed weapons. A recent legislative decision by the Virginia Legislature which stripped students from exercising their second-amendment rights on Virginia campuses denied this protection to students at Virginia Tech.
