Promoted from diaries. Now, everybody sing... - Moe Lane
We, therefore, the delegates with plenary powers of the people of Texas, in solemn convention assembled, appealing to a candid world for the necessities of our condition, do hereby resolve and declare, that our political connection with the Mexican nation has forever ended, and that the people of Texas do now constitute a free, Sovereign, and independent republic, and are fully invested with all the rights and attributes which properly belong to independent nations; and, conscious of the rectitude of our intentions, we fearlessly and confidently commit the issue to the decision of the Supreme arbiter of the destinies of nations.
I've got one of these bumper stickers on my car with pride :)
I didn't vote for Governor Goodhair.

Or did Perry take-over the "Goodhair" mantle when Romney became Former-Governor-Coif?
It's nearly impossible to keep track.

...but I wish I had had someone better to vote for. He has totally abandoned his reelection platform and is abusing the powers of his office.
Thankfully Texas' legislature is only in session for a short period every 2 years, but with the way he is going we may need to increase that time just to protect ourselves from his policies and his hair.
Otherwise, I am greatful to live in Texas.
Long live the Lone Star State.
than other states, but if you get us a good present, I guess we'll invite you inferior states to the party.
we could divide Alaska into two states and make Texas the third largest state. But happy birthday anyway!
In Vino Veritas
We're the largest real State.

We are all heroes, you and Boo and I. Hamsters and rangers everywhere, rejoice!
Texas has the right, under the terms it was admitted to the Union, to divide itself into 4 states. That would add 6 more GOP Senators, if Tom DeLay's redistricting folks were able to accruately draw the state's boundaries. :-)
And the Democrats thought Joe Lieberman was their big problem. :-)
I guess Dallas, Houston, and one other city would both get new state capitols.
W TX would not be GOP territory. I used to live in El Paso and it's definately blue country out there.
And we all know how liberal Austin is.
Just recently, Dallas voted in an all-Dem. local gov't. Kinda scary. I am impressed with the new Co. Atty. though.
If he is, you'll know soon enough. If he's not, there's no point in embarrassing him.

Thanks for this post, and I also wish a happy birthday to my home state of Texas.
Texas Independence Day is time for all of us to remember the men who stood up for their rights and fought for their freedom as they knew it.
It may be surprising to some to learn that the Texas Declaration of Independence was literally produced overnight.
On March 2, 1836, a convention of fifty-four men met in the small settlement of Washington-on-the-Brazos. While the founding fathers of Texas prepared the document, the Alamo in San Antonio was under siege by Santa Anna's Mexican army. In near-freezing weather, in an unfinished building, the convention voted in the early morning hours to unanimously accept the resolution. Ultimately, fifty-four members signed that document and the Republic of Texas was born.
The declaration sent a signal to Mexico that Texans would no longer live under what many of them regarded as a tyrannical rule from a very distant power. It was testimony that Texans were ready and willing to fight for their freedom. And fight they did.
Four days after signing the document, William Barret Travis and over 180 brave men at the Alamo concluded their gruesome battle against more several thousand Mexican troops. The odds were against the Texas volunteers, but they were determined to stay fight until the end for their freedom and their country.
From the Alamo, Colonel Travis wrote to his countrymen the following:
Fellow citizens and compatriots: I am besieged by a thousand or more of the Mexicans under Santa Anna--I have sustained a continual bombardment and cannonade for 24 hours and have not lost a man--the enemy has demanded a surrender at discretion, otherwise, the garrison is to be put to the sword, if the fort is taken--I have answered the demands with a cannon shot, and our flag still waves proudly from the wall --
I shall never surrender or retreat.
Then, I call on you in the name of liberty, of patriotism and of everything dear to the American character, to come to our aid, with all dispatch. The enemy is receiving reinforcements daily and will no doubt increase to three or four thousand in four or five days. If this call is neglected, I am determined to sustain myself as long as possible and die like a soldier who never forgets what is due to his own honor and that of his country--Victory or Death.
The heroic defense of the Alamo gave Sam Houston just enough time to perfect his plans for the defense of Texas and enabled him to win the famous Battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836.
It is in this spirit that we celebrate Texas Independence Day. It is a reminder that we must never relent in the fight for freedom.
God Bless Texas!
Thank you for your personal reply to my post, Congressman.
As they say, I wasn't born in Texas, but I got here (CD-14) as fast as I could.

Sorry, not feeling all that pumped about the future right now.

...Now smack some sense into you Governor!
Allowing your Governor to force little girls to take an HPV vaccine by executive fiat and not the legislative process is shocking to me!
