As a disclaimer, I consider Survey USA polls more "interesting" than persuasive. But these results are certainly VERY interesting. I'd like to see a Rasmussen poll on this race with the same matchups.

If this is true, though, why should we sell ourselves short with a Senator Heather Wilson if we could have a Senator Steven Pearce?

So, Steven Pearce runs in a more conservative district and has a more conservative record. Heather Wilson represents a 51% Kerry district and has a more liberal record. That's not really all that surprising.

But this poll suggests that the slightly more conservative Steven Pearce actually has a better chance of capturing the Senate seat than does Heather Wilson. And if we really want the most electable candidate, perhaps Steven Pearce is our candidate, not Heather Wilson.

Just something to think about.

Recommended.

....if only for the reason that the GOP could very possibly lose Heather Wilson's house seat if she doesn't run for re-election. Heather represents a purple district, but has been adept in winning close elections there.

“.....women and minorities hardest hit”

And she's not going to back out and run for re-election to her seat just because Pearce jumps in.

On the other hand, the GOP has a county sheriff that they're really keen on winning her seat.

It's too bad that Heather doesn't hold onto her seat and run for governor in 2010 and allow the sheriff to win her seat that year.

Ah...but this is how things are now.

...and be forced to defend her house seat.

“.....women and minorities hardest hit”

...but the primary for the Senate and the House - nay, all Republican nominations for all office in New Mexico - are held on the same day. Just like they are in every other state.

:-)

Unless Pearce jumps in and jumps out to a commanding lead, she sees the writing on the wall and goes back to run for her seat, the dye is cast, I'm afraid.
