Why I Am Still For Huckabee, Even Now---Part V

"The night is coming, when no man can work." The world continues to speed at hundreds of thousands of miles per hour, spinning on its axis, its rotation around the sun, in the midst of the vastness of this galaxy, in the midst of the vastness of the number of galaxies of this universe. And in this world, while Chinese people die from unprecedented snowfall, while dozens of innocent Iraqis and Afghans die at the hands of Al Qaeda's bombs and killers, while orphan children search for food in the trash mountains of Manila, Mexico City, and Cairo, and from Delhi to Moscow to Kinshasa to Montreal young women by the tens of thousands, even over 140,000, slaughter their unborn children through legal means, we are holding the first major stage of our presidential election.
In the context of our world, and even our own private pain, an election, a nominating process, assumes a pettiness, even an arrogance. To approach such an event as Super Tuesday in the context of what I have pointed demands humility and sobriety.
I have been railed against since I began writing these blogs on behalf of Governor Mike Huckabee. I have been told that I was mentally unstable, that I was shameful, that I promoted class warfare, that I was opposed to capitalism, that I was a closet Democrat, that I was naive, that I wanted open borders.
Without the peace that comes of having known the unconditional, unmerited, limitless favor and grace of God through the shed blood of Jesus Christ my Lord, "I am a man of unclean lips, and I live in a land of unclean lips." My ability to successfully persuade others to accept my candidate is indeed limited, and to say otherwise is presumptuous without peer.
However, I am going to lift my voice on the Governor's behalf. I know that the polls are doubtful on his behalf, and the next two-three days will tell whether his candidacy will be judged to have been a fool's errand, or whether his story will continue. I am a realist, and I can read the polls. Until that is an official result, however, I'll still seek to persuade people that to support Mitt Romney or John McCain, while it doesn't make you less of an American, certainly, or even less of a conservative, it may make you less wise and discerning.
I will deal with the issue of his call for a military buildup. Some are thinking that to equal 6% of GDP for military spending is unworkable and unrealistic. I am once again astonished at such arguments. We reached that under Reagan, we did that regularly in Vietnam, in Korea, and way over that in World War II. We can now build the force level we will need, and the weapons and equipment, much more easily than our fathers did. We can continue to employ ever more advanced technologies in building "American weaponry" without re-dislocate our knowledge-based American economy. And it will put millions back to work for a nation that can, as a result, avoid recession or work.
I am hopeful, and stating, which he did in his interview with the 'New York Times', that Governor Huckabee will be in the Oval Office what he has been on the campaign trail. In the meantime, I can work, and I can speak. I will see you all later.

Right now the Republican race is McCain or not McCain.
not McCain == Romney
If you vote for Huckabee, you give a state to McCain.
Same reason that voting for not-GOP will give a state to Hillary or Obama in general.
A vote for Huckabee can deny a delegate to McCain, depending on the state, which is a plus in my book. It looks like McCain is going to win and he is certain to remain the front runner after tomorrow... I just hope he can be denied a majority at the convention and has to deal and make all kinds of promises to get that majority. The Huckster could help out there, depending on how long he stays in it and how many votes he attracts.

Do people take this guy seriously anymore?

...I guess I'll just have to hold my nose and vote McCain.
I believe most Huckians view McCain and Mitt with equal distaste. When one makes the argument that a vote for Huck is a vote for McCain, most Huckians are not swayed because we don't view Mitt as any better an option than McCain.
Faced with two equally distasteful options -- and a third option (e.g. Huck) which wan can enthusiastically support -- it doesn't take a brain surgeon to make a rational choice.
Realistically for me, I don't vote until the Texas primary. If Huck is still campaigning in early March, I'll make my decision at that point whether or not a Huck vote is truly a wasted vote. Who knows, by that time there may be a ringing cry that "A Vote for Huck is a Vote for Romney."
After all, two months ago, the chattering class was confidently proclaiming that "A Vote for Huck was a Vote for Rudy." My how times change. They may still change before this thing is over.

on the military. I do, however, have a huge problem with Huckabee's 6% talking point, because that's all it is.
Some questions that Huckabee has not addressed...
1. How much is 6% of GDP?
2. How much of an increase will this add to the Pentagon?
3. Where will the money be spent?
4. How large should our Army/Marines be, and how should those troops be allocated?
5. How many ships should we have in the Navy?
6. What will additional dollars be spent for in Air Force assets?
7. Where will the increase come from?
First of all, I see no evidence that Huckabee knows anything about the military or the use of force. He has no personal experience (not necessarily a big deal), but he also has no military advisory committee of any note. He has no record of commentary on military matters. The 6% number appears, given no backup, to have simply been pulled out of the air (or somewhere else) to appeal to military votes.
Frankly, this is typical Huckabee. Reduce policy to a 10 second sound byte and hope nobody notices that you have no experience, no advisors and no real program. See immigration, tax policy and foreign policy for additional examples of the same thing.
