Washington Post to Obama: Do The Town Hall Debates, Cupcake

Let's face it, McCain giving a speech with a teleprompter is not a pretty site. It is hard to believe a guy that has been in politics this long hasn't mastered it yet, but it is what it is. Obama, of course, is the master speechifier.
But McCain is the master at town hall events. He takes all questions, from anyone, and answers them all. Sometimes he fights and argues with the person, sometimes they agree, but that is his format.
Obama says quite clearly, he will debate McCain, "Anywhere and Anytime."
So being the cagey SOB that he is, McCain challenged Obama to 10 town hall debates.
Obama, cagey SOB that he is, agreed to one town hall debate on Independence Day, when no one will be around to watch.
Here's the reason Obama doesn't want them.

There is another half dozen gaffes in this earlier post, Obama’s Got Himself a Strategery: Out-Gaffe Bush.
McCain, by contrast, is pretty good here.
Good off-the-cuff stuff here.
Google "McCain Town Hall Videos," pick any one, and you will see why McCain wants them.
The Washington Post doesn't think Senator Silver Tongue should duck the town halls.
The sooner the sniping stops and the serious discussion starts, the better off the country will be -- and the best way to achieve that would be for the candidates to meet, one-on-one, as often as possible. Mr. McCain's proposal to hold weekly town hall meetings was -- as the Obama campaign said -- "appealing." That was more than three weeks ago. Since then, the Obama campaign has countered with the offer of a single town hall meeting, on nobody-will-be-watching July 4, and a second debate on foreign policy -- this in addition to the three traditional fall debates. Mr. Obama has written that "one of my favorite tasks of being a senator is hosting town hall meetings." He launched his campaign decrying "the ease with which we're distracted by the petty and trivial." Now, he should seize the opportunity to practice the change he preaches.
How long can Barry stay up in the ivory tower with his teleprompter if he really wants to be president?

I wonder what happened.

They are not pleased that Obama lied to them about it.
The Fuzzy Puppy of the VRWC. I've been usurped!
Maybe the Post was rooting for Hillary?
I don't know. I don't pay attention to the post. Wouldn't buy it to burn it in a campfire.
I think too much of campfires to subject them to that.

Dependence is Slavery.
Part of it is support of public financing, and another is sheer hubris: the WaPo expects its candidates to pay heed to their editorial positions. While I doubt the WaPo withholds its endorsement of Obama, it is not out of the range of possibilities.
CHICKEN!!! Barry is a CHICKen!
(And recommended for the title, if nothing else...)
The Obamessiah knows that his hope-and-change sing-song won't play when McCain asks "So exactly what DO you propose to do about that, Mr. Obama?" McCain has him cornered.

Here is what it is like:
"Umm...buk buk.... uh..... buk buk... (where is that teleprompter?) buk buk... uh... buk... (that is NOT the hen I knew) buk... ummmm. buk-awwk...

Obama's speech writers deserve a raise. The man sounds like he can't put together a coherent sentence at that Town Hall - and it didn't even sound like that was in response to anything. He just couldn't articulate a thought. Which says to me that all of his prepared speech "thoughts" are coming from the guys in the windowless room writing the speech.
It also shocks me that for as good as McCain is in the town hall format and in responding to questions and being unscripted, he is so stiff when he gives a prepared speech. You'd think reading something would be easier. Has he always been like this? I've heard him on the floor of the Senate and never noticed the kind of awkwardness that he seems to exhibit now. Could the writers not be doing the best job - maybe failing to really capture McCain's voice in a way that makes the actual delivery sound funny?

This at least the third serious criticism I have seen them make against the Messiah (the public funding flip-flop, national ad campaign, and now this)
They haven't reached Macaca levels yet, but there is something going on here. I'm starting to be reminded of 1984 when the Post chose not to endorse a candidate (which EVERYONE knew was an implicit endorsment of Reagan).
