But for ongoing construction? Will Bush be Truman or LBJ? [UPDATED]

The President of the leader of the Axis of Evil waging war against America would have been welcome to visit the site of the greatest terror attack against the United States but for ongoing construction (and security problems if that BS didn't fly).
The request to enter the fenced-in site was rejected because of ongoing construction there, Browne said. "Requests for the Iranian President to visit the immediate area would also be opposed by the NYPD on security grounds," Browne said.
The White House, which in recent weeks has ramped up the rhetoric against and allowed the Pentagon to acknowledge acts of war against the United States by the Iranian regime, said that the issue:
"...is a matter for the city of New York, but it seems more than odd that the president of a country that is a state sponsor of terror would visit ground zero."
What is really odd is that the White House would defer such a decision to a city and that the city would even consider such a request in the first place and then not base the decision on the evil that is the Iranian regime.
I have been calling for President Bush, to publicly acknowledge the war Iran is waging against us and to act accordingly for over a year. I have no doubt they are taking steps behind the scenes and on the ground in Iraq. But it is past time to openly address the issue either with:
1) An early morning Oval Office address announcing the previous evening's bombing campaign in side Iran due to their across the border attacks against American forces in Iraq;
2) A demand that Congress declare war on Iran; and/or
3) A demand that Congress pass a resolution making regime change in Iran official US policy.
Iran is waging war against the United States and has been since 1979. They wage it everyday in Iraq.
One needs no Bush doctrine for the US to defend itself. It is the President's duty to defend the troops in Iraq against Iran's open acts of war against them. We can have no Vietnam-like safe havens across the Iraqi border.
Mr. President, do you want to be Truman of LBJ? The choice is yours.

action, and even is now preparing, against the adjacent enemy. We are building a base on the Iranian border and gave them a face to face warning. We have recently ramped up the rhetoric and finally let generals, incl Petraeous, state the obvious.
I just want to able to say I told you so.

especially b/c there's no reason to take military action. we can just squeeze iran, putting pressure on their refined oil shipments and giving support to the internal anti-mullah citizens groups.
send ion their Quds forces and take out the munitions factories that make the weapons they use against our forces in Iraq
not to mention the regime?

Reading in the comments section of Hot Air I came across an interesting piece at Turban Bomb blog. Profanity rules here at RedState prevent me copying the 17th century Russian Kossack reply to a Muslim leader's request. Let's just say 'Political Correctness' was not followed back in the day.

Bush is one guy that never does things to improve his polls or his legacy. I trust that he knows what he is doing and will do what is necessary to keep us safe.
However, I think that bombing Iran right now would be a sure way to get Democrats elected.

in the Iraq War.
Why is Sadr still living? Why have we not secured the borders against Iran, Syria and Saudi Arabia? Why did it take so long to bring in the minimum number of troops to do the job? Why is he already, after a few months of "the surge", talking about reducing our forces?
There aren't any good reasons for not having secured the borders. But, as for the Sadr deal, I think it's wise to remember that Iraqi politics will go on long after we're gone. And there are costs to be borne by doing things like assassinating a guy like Sadr.
I think it should be obvious that the reason they haven't taken that tact is because it would strengthen the radical Shiite political position.
This isn't a strongarm government. It's, ostensibly, a democratic one. That means that public sentiment matters...and surely you don't think that public sentiment would be aided by killing off a thug like Sadr. He's a pretty popular figure there, sadly.
To the credit of Gen. Petraeus (and the president, for that matter), the current strategy is much better about confronting the Shiite extremists. Because of that and because we're arming and training Sunnis, the Maliki government is none too happy with us right now.
That's their prerogative, of course. But it seems like we're pushing them about as far as we can -- which is farther than we had been under Casey's command, but not so far (ie: killing Sadr) as to basically ruin all chances of reconciliation.

If I have read it once I've read it countless times that the candidate Fred Thompson does not have the 'fire in the belly' for the POTUS. Why isn't anybody asking if Pres. Bush has the 'fire in the belly'? Lately, he seems like he has anything but 'fire in the belly'. He nominates a Schumer approved pro-abortion guy to be his AG, and he defers to locals in NYC with respect to the President of Iran. WTF? I want him to be strong. I want him to be Truman and not LBJ. But, really no one else but he can make it so.
