Quiz:Which Republican Presidential candidate likes and understands Reverend Wright? (Hint:Not Mitt, Rudy, Johnny, Fred or Paul)

Because we have had such a fine array of diaries smacking around the Black version of the Grand Wizard on RS, I previously had no desire to write a diary on the subject. Until of course, I saw this yesterday.

Once again, reminding me all over again why Slick Huckster needs to be nowhere near the leadership of the GOP; not only does America's Pastor not get it on the issues that matter, he alos does not get it on race. This is of course something I thought about extensively when I withdrew my two day support from Slick Huckabee, having been drawn in by his snake oil tongue, and ability to lie and spin one liners with the best of them.
This is not the first time Huckabee has been off the deep end on race. As I wrote some months ago on Huckabee, that the main reason I withdrew my support was the original reason for supporting him. I was impressed with a Republican that could draw 55 percent of the Black vote, and I thought that he was someone who could really be used to break the stranglehold. Then I listened to him at the Black college debate, and I realized he gets so much of the Black Democratic vote because he talks and sounds just like a Democrat on race, just like he does on every other issue. Except of course when he's talking about putting gay HIV patients in a dark room and locking them away forever, that just makes him an idiot past the wings of any party. Allow me to quote from the Slickster
"As easy as it is for those of us who are white to look back and say 'That's a terrible statement!' ... I grew up in a very segregated South. And I think that you have to cut some slack — and I'm gonna be probably the only conservative in America who's gonna say something like this, but I'm just tellin' you — we've gotta cut some slack to people who grew up being called names..."
Um, excuse me?? Because someone calls you a name you have the right to stand up and call for the destruction of America? How about we stop treating Blacks like children, and calling out people for unacceptable behavior. How about the fact that there are plenty of people that grew up being called names, that don't feel the need to lash out in their country. My mother grew up where teachers asked, how many people wish there were no n****rs in this class-and people rasied their hands. Somehow, my mother hasn't felt the need to lash out in the form of a GD American speech or erupt in her hatred of white people because of this. In contrast, my mother has friends of all races, as do I, as will my son.
The fact that Huckabee is willing to excuse this kind of behavior, frankly says a lot about his character, for a man who held himself up as holier than thou throughout the primary. And yes, as a Rudy to Romney backer, it does give me great pleasure to write this, thank you for asking. So now I ask my Huckabee supporting SoCon wing, is this the guy you really want in charge? Still drinking the Koolaid that he should come back and run knowing that he is an apologist for a virulent racist? Or did that Kool-Aid suddenly start to taste a little funny? Just thought I should share for all my friends on the social wing, a FYI, from the neo-cons.
Kisses,
BR

...for his 30 odd year political relationship with Jerry Falwell that now extends to Jerry Jr.
I think he's mostly just covering his own political hide more than anything else. But he was way off the deep end in my opinion, so maybe he actually buys this.

He'd be more comfortable at a Rainbow/PUSH meeting with Jesse and Al than BHO. Huckabee has made lots of other remakrs about hwo Blacks are held down by racism, and how the government needs to get their feet of Blacks necks (yes hes actually said that verbatim), and talked about the racial aspect of Blacks being locked up for crack and whties being locked up for cocke. He's a demagogue all the way, and his stance on race is down the line in sync with Jesse Jackson. He is exactly how not to go about bringing Blacks into the tent, because indstead of offering an alternative to the Democratsn race plantation, Slick Huckster tells Blacks that's he's got a new plantation with a fan for outside.

for Obama, that is. It would be the perfect ticket. Huck's populism works for the Dems and he is just Republican enough for a crossover draw. Not to mention those of the Religous Left.
Ugh. I think I am going to be sick.
Independent by choice, conservative by belief
If not for that Iowa-vampire, the party would now be unifying around Mitt Romney instead of my 3rd-favorite candidate (after Mitt and Fred).
Proudly supporting John S. McCain for President (McCain/Romney?)
This is a treason issue; not a race issue.
Oh and we do cut Pastor Wright some slack. He's got a 1st amendment right to preach like that and not go to jail. But he doesn't have a right to preach like that and be the 20-year spiritual advisor to our next president.
And any other pastor, back or white, has the same 1st amendment right to say, "G*d D*mn America". And it may be a right under our constitution, but it is still a very evil thing to say.
just like we don't throw David Duke in jail. We also don't make David Duke in charge of anything, or anyone else with questionable practices based on melanin amount (see Paul, Ron. The Democrats take these people and make them heads of committees. Disgusting.

I think Huck is a dangerous demogogue. I don't want him anywhere near the Party leadership. Thanks for the heads up on his disgraceful comments.
That being said, there is no need to bash "Socons" in defense of "Neocons". I don't care for Neocons, but I don't like Huck. I hate all these imaginary camps. Anyway, most conservatives aren't down with the Rudy version of conservatism or the Huck version of conservatism.
It was for the SoCon only Huck supprters, the Single Issue Values Voters who were the koolaid drinkers. I got no problem with Socons supporting Fred, Mitt, Johnny Mac, Brownback, or anything else. Huckabee was the one trick pony, and the more I hear out of his mouth the happier I am to see him out of the race, and hopefully stuff like this keeps him out of the running for VP.

There is absolutely no good reason for any Republican (or any Democrat, for that matter) giving cover to people who perpetuate the divides of the past on matters of race. Rev. Wright may reflect the feelings of a lot of black Americans -- and it's not hard to understand why Wright harbors such ill feelings about the country, considering the era in which he grew up.
But we need to be looking forward, not behind. And the truth of the matter is, there is a lot invested in the divides that Wright talks about. And the reason he talks about them isn't to move beyond them, but to harvest that investment.
Obama's right when he says "not this time" and talks about moving ahead and entering a period of post-racialism in America. His problem is that his actions and relationship with somebody like Wright don't match those words and those hopes.
And now Huckabee is giving cover for Wright from the other side of the aisle. Cover that Jeremiah Wright, and what he represents, absolutely does not deserve.

In Philadelphia as a rough contemporary of Walter E. Williams, Colin Powell and Bill Cosby. Not like he was a sharecropper's kid (like Justice Thomas and SoS Condi.) He has no excuse --NONE-- for his "hate America" c**p. He was 4 years old when the military was desegregated, 12 when Little Rock happened - and he was in an integrated school in Philly at the time. Don't fall for that "history of slavery"excuse.
"Uncle Mike" off to some quiet, out of the way corner of the party--or start seriously suggesting that he finish the process and just sign up for the other side. He gave me the creeps from the get-go. You have provided the definitive reason why--a race-baiting, government-enlarging disgrace, both as a pastor and a supposedly right wing politician. Great diary!
Huckabee about how to go about promoting hate of a particular group without taking the fall. Wright should have simply used code language that only his followers and fellow believers would understand to incite further divisions & animosity between the two groups. Wright should have also relied on surrogates to bash whites and the country & interject incendiary rhetoric to passify his believers while taking the 'high road'. And the number one lesson Huckabee could teach Wright, is when preaching hate or intolerance you must never ever document it with cameras or recorders. Sadly, Wright is just a novice at this business. Huckabee is truly the master.
He should have used a more innocent voice...maybe played a bass. And not to mention have some realy nice furniture in the church.

Nice job, BR. Under the "hate the sin, forgive the sinner" category, I feel the need to wait for the sinner to ask for forgiveness. Until then, I'll just ignore Rev. Wright and wonder what is wrong with the people who sign on to get his message delivered in person every week.

While I don't think Huckabee has a chance to win the GOP nomination for president, nor that he has a chance to be a VP pick, I do think he would be a fine Senator from Arkansas.
Some people are clueless as to what the GOP missed by the fiscal conservative elites blackballing Huckabee. He truly could have united this country. He knows what "we the people" are going through. He was considered a pauper compared to the other candidates because he's not rich. He is one of us working class Americans. (You know, the majority of voters) Many of the Democrats and Independents LIKE the guy; which means he could have gotten votes from conservatives and moderates from all 3 parties. Some people should spend a little bit of time reading the most voted on in the last 7 days reader submitted articles at Real Clear Politics. Read the one titled, "That Huckappeal: Liberals know they dodged a Huckabullet."
They liked him the way we like Hillary Clinton-they like whichever candidate is most beatable. Not to mention take gay marriage and abortion off the table, and you've got a Southern Democrat. Including the corruption and crookedness.

What state was Romney's do or die state? The BLUE state of Michigan where the Democrats votes weren't going to count; so they decided to mess things up for the Republican Party. The Michigan Democrats organized a vote for Romney like Rush did for Hillary and Morris did for Obama. I saw the postings on the Detroit Free Press website BEFORE the election. (That is a popular site for autoworkers following contracts; which is how I found it and knew to check it for Michigan election information.) I just did a google search and found a site where it described the Michigan Dems' strategy and reasoning pretty well. There is s picture of Mitt and a caption that says, "Democrats for Mitt because the GOP deserves the very worst."

Huckabee's wins were ALL in RED states; which, by the way, are the ones needed to win the general election. I wish our "conservative" leaders were intelligent enough to understand how that works. (And they think moral value conservatives are gullible enough to follow their lead and vote for a ticket with Romney on it? Which could happen if they aren't smart enough to research for themselves.)
What's Kos's track record on candidates again? Riiight. I hate tob e the one to burst your bubble, but saying Huckabe is credible because he won the deep red states is like saying Hillary should be the nominee becuse she won New York adn California. Huck won states that the GOP never ever loses. On top of that, he never won any group outside of his hard right Evangelical nutcase crowd. Last time I checked we had fifty states on the map, and to win a Presidential election you have to win some swing states. But speaking of Red States, Huckabee has also managed to put himself in the position of being the only canddiate that was goign to lose the Red state of Utah in the general because he believs Mormons think Jesus and the devil are brothers. Not to mention all the push polling about Mitt's religion. Oh by the way, how did he do in South Carolina? Right, he lost because Thompson was in just liek he lost later because Mitt was in. You know I think if no one but Huckabee ran, he would have had an easier time. And as for your claim that you moral conservatives will leave if Romney's on the ticket-good riddance and don't let the door hit you on the rear in the way out. The Fiscons and Hawks will all be walking if Huckabee parks his double wide anywhere near the McCain ticket.

Mike Huckabee is a loser. He would make Goldwater/McGovern/Dukakis electoral totals look good by comparison.
Please go away. McCain, for better or worse, is the Republican nominee. Get over it.

refighting an old battle. You've already defeated the Mormon presidential candidate. You have done well, but this is no time to relax. Your next battle is already raging on this season of American Idol where 2 Mormons are in the top 11! Mobilize your army, get on the phones and make sure those cultists don't get any more positive press, further legitimizing their satanic cult. The situation is pretty bad (they are among the favorites). Do not rest until every Mormon has been taken down. It is your only way to salvation. Good luck and may the force be with you. Apparently, for some people, cutting someone some slack is equivalent to being an "apologist" for their behavior.
Huckabee specifically stated he wasn't defending Wright's statements and obviously thought Wright's statements were wrong. He wasn't excusing the remarks and saying they were good.
I disagree with Huckabee's response and would rather him have said that although he understands the expressions of anger are rooted in past wrongs, he doesn't think it's right to accuse contemporaries for the sins of their fathers, or all whites for the actions of a few.
But your reactions are way overboard and are indicative of your own hatred of Huckabee. That's undeniable.

To criticize him for trying to legitimize a hate filled viewpoint? Disagreeing with a viewpoint is one thing. I disagree with all sorts of legitimate viewpoints. This racist hate-filled yahoo does not have a legitimate viewpoint. He preaches hate to a community which needs more divisiveness like I need a hole in my head. He's a repugnant figure that should NOT be associated with. That's the problem with Huckabee's statements. Disagreeing is great. Disagreeing but saying such hate speech is understandable? That is just wrong. Huckabee should know that. The problem: he doesn't.

I thought we had finished trying to tear apart our own party already. The support of our SoCons is as essential as ever. We don't need to alienate them for something as pointless as this.
Why would we do that when we can turn honest people into liars, patriotic public servants into traitors, turn non-issues into perpetual battles that divide us over and over, and ultimately do NOTHING good for this country?
Haven't you learned yet that politics is just another word for partisan?
Forgive my bitterness. I'm not surprised that Huckabee, a good man who has done much for his country, tried to actually offer a reasonable opinion to a silly controversy.
I guess I also shouldn't be surprised he'd get lambasted for it.

History is all that will help us with the future
Unless and until it's taken seriously by all sides, every time it happens, it will continue. We don't need people excusing another person's racism. We need to call it what it is.
If people are going to be excused for currently promoting racism because of past racism (real or imagined), we will never make any progress on this issue. Only by calling racism what it is every time will we be able to move forward.

They can do that all they want. They only guarantee that people like me will firm our resolve for the future, while they hurt their own position.
The main problem is that they don't understand that the best politics is about persuasion, not scoring points. This is something they have in common with race-baiting liberals, but I would hope that more mature conservatives will learn a lesson from their foolishness.
Which is why I continue to recommend this post to RS.

He's explicitly racial, when the key is to move beyond race. He's still talking in the same voice and with the same logic as Sharpton, Jesse, and Wright. Obama talks post-racial, and his actions prove otherwise. Although I don't think Obama is on the level on Jesse and Al rhetorically, his actions are the same down the line. The GOP needs to distance itself, not embrace this trash.

they came to support him because he has a way of connecting with large crowds of folk and because he was slick enough to either stay under the radar or change his liberal positions before anyone who cared noticed. A close resemblence to Obama, come to think of it,
except Obama thankfully is standing by his idiotic Reverend Wright while throwing your "average white person", like his grandmother, under the bus. Seriously, was not anyone offended by his Phili-610AM stereotypical "whitey" comments?
Back to (dumb luck) Huck', what many fail to realize is that he hung on to the bitter end, not because he had a snowballs chance in, well, you know...but because of greed. I'll be looking to see how much MORE he gets paid on his speaking gigs around the world and to RU-486 abortion pill providers and the like.
Greed and ego are in Huckabee's nature. Ergo his farewell "wedding shower" registry as governor some 15 years after he and his wife were married horse-hockey blanter.
As a Fred to grudingly McCain supporter, I seeth at how Huckabee worked to undermine Sen. Fred Thompson wherever he could do so. It wasn't McCain's people who floated the false story of Thompson dropping early out of Iowa, it was Huckabee's in hopes of ridding him from the scene sooner because South Carolina meant that much to his candidacy.
