The John Edwards "Breck Girl" Story that just Keeps on Giving!

The story that just won't go away. John Edwards, it seems, has continued to pay incredible prices for his haircuts, not just the $400 we first heard about during the 2004 campaign, but now up to $1200 as the story below details. And notice it is being kept alive by -- The Washington Post! Not exactly the Republican Party's best friend. Undoubtely, the WAPO is trying to help Hillary Clinton, not help Republicans in any way. So, here is a part of that WAPO article, and because it is just so tempting, it is followed by the YouTube video of the "Breck Girl", aka "Silky Pony", aka John Edwards taking just a second to fix his hair! Somehow, I don't think Fred Thompson will need as long to fix his hair!

For four decades, Joseph Torrenueva has cut the hair of Hollywood celebrities, from Marlon Brando to Bob Barker, so when a friend told him in 2003 that a presidential candidate needed grooming advice, he agreed to help.

The Beverly Hills hairstylist, a Democrat, said he hit it off with then-Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina at a meeting in Los Angeles that brought several fashion experts together to advise the candidate on his appearance. Since then, Torrenueva has cut Edwards's hair at least 16 times.

At first, the haircuts were free. But because Torrenueva often had to fly somewhere on the campaign trail to meet his client, he began charging $300 to $500 for each cut, plus the cost of airfare and hotels when he had to travel outside California.

Torrenueva said one haircut during the 2004 presidential race cost $1,250 because he traveled to Atlanta and lost two days of work.

"He has nice hair," the stylist said of Edwards in an interview. "I try to make the man handsome, strong, more mature and these are the things, as an expert, that's what we do."

It is some kind of commentary on the state of American politics that as Edwards has campaigned for president, vice president and now president again, his hair seems to have attracted as much attention as, say, his position on health care. But when his campaign reported in April that it had paid for two of his haircuts at $400 each, the political damage was immediate. With each punch line on late night TV his image as a self-styled populist making poverty his signature issue was further eroded.

Edwards said that he was embarrassed by the cost and that he "didn't know it would be that expensive," suggesting the haircuts were some kind of aberration given by "that guy" his staff had arranged. His wife, Elizabeth, made lots of jokes at her husband's expense and the campaign wished the whole issue would go away.

But Torrenueva's account of his long relationship with Edwards -- the first he's given -- probably guarantees that won't happen quite yet. And if $400 seemed a lot for a haircut, how about one for three times that?

Asked for a comment, the Edwards campaign said this week that Edwards had arranged for the stylist to give him numerous cuts over the past four years. But it said that a personal assistant handled paying for the haircuts and that Edwards didn't realize how much they cost.

to me that this video is so powerful. It's amazing how much it reveals in such a simple way. Anybody remember the Dukakis video where he is riding around in a tank with a goofy grin on his face?

youtube is going to be a HUGE factor in elections going forward.

No Question About it. This video has been and is political destruction for John Edwards.

Compare the effects of the Edwards video to the effects of the Bush video (involving a much cheaper and faster hair straightening, and use of a profane gesture).

The Edwards one is very damaging, while the Bush video, which logically should be damaging (childish, immature, offensive), is not in the least.

Indeed, it's hard to imagine any Democrat being able to pull off what Bush did with ease in that video. Very interesting. Could it be a matter of expectations and fitting into a defined role? Is hypocrisy the most damaging attribute?

that bald is beautiful and of course the other one that beauty is from within which John Edwards shows none of.

The fuzzy guy now has to clean dog snot off the monitor thingy. Just because "people" have opposable thumbs they they think their stupid opinion counts for something.

My mom has nice hair...

And to think that Edwards thing has to actually pay somebody to cut his stupid hair. No bows or tail fluffing or anything. Sheesh. (I stole that word from the fuzzy guy, neither one of us knows what it means, it just sounds cool.)

Grrrrrrrrrr. Woof.
And don't mess with my mom!

Hilarious! LOL

and I am guessing beautiful within as well?

there is no comparison to Edwards. Or any other politico for that matter.

I bit him. Twice. Nobody calls mom names like that.

Grrrrrrrrr.

"But [the campaign] said that a personal assistant handled paying for the haircuts and that Edwards didn't realize how much they cost."

So the Silky Pony is using campaign contributions (from folks in the "Other America" for whom he claims to speak) to underwrite his Paris Hilton campaign lifestyle?

That would seem to be an even bigger story.

who criticized Bush 41 as I recall for not knowing the cost of a loaf of bread.

Good point! The people from the "Other America" pay for the guy to get $1250 haircuts even while he gets paid up to $50,000 to give his "Two Americas" "poverty" speeches. Quite a racket.

He wrote that revelations in both Clinton biographies that recently came out were new and potentially damaging, when in fact they are rehash of past accusations.
I disagree that he's trying to help Clinton, and not Republicans.

Did'nt know that about the writer.

He attacks Clinton also.
Here is one article he wrote a few months ago suggesting Clinton's charity, called "Clinton Family Foundation", was corrupt.

when you have something potentially damaging, you get one of your own toadies to put it out early. Then, when people bring it up again, you make the claim...

when in fact they are rehash of past accusations.

Which one are you? Paul? or James? (No, I am not referring to Saints!)

Any great clips or fantastic sam's could cut Breck Girls hair for $12. It's not like its some complicated hair style. Edwards is caught up in the celebrity image where he has to have the celebrity barber. Edwards must be one insecure person.

Fantastic Sam's is generally $15. Great Clips and Cost Cutters tend to run around $12, while SuperCuts varies between those prices.

Some lawyers don't need $1,000+ haircuts.

Combined, from the local Italian barbers. Frankly, you'd be hard pressed to find a working barber who couldn't duplicate Edwards' haircut; when I was 5, probably half the kids in my kindergarten had that haircut.

...here in the South. We felt that nominally competent chains that charged more were a better idea.

And get great haircuts for $5, including a generous tip.

I'm no lawyer, but I haven't paid for a haircut in 7 years, one of the few benefits of losing your hair at a young age. Although I think I would probably still shave my head anyways. $50 clippers for 7 years worth of cuts....

My wife by bs

gave me my last haircut, just before my surgery a couple of weeks ago. Used the #4 attachment, clipped it to about 1/2". Took all of about five minutes using a $19.95 set of clippers, so they're already paid off. She said "tell me why we've been paying for this all this time!"

Just another proof point for the Breck Girl's lack of fiscal expertise. What a maroon...

But the lady comes to the house, I get a bath, conditioner, a haircut and my tummy shaved. The $55.00 includes the tip.

Woof...

Does not seem to gain traction.

Besides, she probably paid $1,000 for her entire wardrobe.

Ronald Reagan had dyed hair. He probably paid a stylist to dye it for him. So what?

You signed up for RS to post that? Brilliant...

...as RS kicked me off for a previous comment. And like this one it wasn't even insulting, just true. I'm sure I won't be here long this time either so snark while you can.

If I did not know better I would think it was a parody.

Just great.

That's the actual headline from the Atlanta Journal (AJC.Com)

Imagine my chagrin and somewhat disappointment to realize that it's a re-hash of Breck-gate, and not commentary on Elizabeth Edwards vs. Ann Coulter or a bimbo eruption.
