Posted at 4:44pm on Feb. 6, 2008 Communicating conservative economic policies
By Brad G
There has been some discussion on the new Fred Thompson News Forum about the problems conservatives have had lately communicating economic policies. First off, I do agree that our conservative leaders have not excelled in this area. Fred Thompson has been the best lately, and he was evidently just good enough to get third in South Carolina, behind the guy who voted against the Bush tax cuts and our version of John "Two Americas, sonofamillworker" Edwards, Mike Huckabee. Fred should at least be given credit for trying...

From Chattanoogan.com:
“While I am always happy to see Americans get refunds from the federal government, especially when so many of our citizens are struggling, I do have strong reservations about the economic stimulus package. I find something inappropriate about a deficit-ridden federal government borrowing money from our grandchildren and sprinkling it across the country for a short-term fix that will do little, if anything, to jump-start our troubled economy.”

The obituaries of Fred Thompson's presidential candidacy may already be written and, in some cases, published, but there are good reasons for Thompson to continue on with his struggle to return the Republican Party and America back to first principles. The most compelling reason to continue the fight is the evidence of the Tennessean's success. I don't necessarily mean his electoral success, but rather his success in bringing conservative positions to the fore.

By Brad G
VINTON, Iowa - Ever since Barack Obama suggested Hillary Clinton's eight years as first lady were a glorified tea party a few days back, she's looked for an opening to strike back.
On Saturday night in Dubuque she pounced, arguing she risked her life on White House missions in the 1990s, including a hair-raising flight into Bosnia that ended in a "corkscrew" landing and a sprint off the tarmac to dodge snipers.

I have as recently as yesterday criticized President Bush's big-spending form of conservatism, but I do still support the President. I only took the W04 sticker off my car to make room for the one that says Fred08. Mostly, I admire his steadfastness and resolve in the Global War on Terror. Facing near-record low approval ratings has not deterred President Bush in what has become the defining issue of our time and his Presidency. While the answers to his "political worldview" questions on the role of government may differ from mine in some areas, we agree that the government has no higher responsibility than protecting its people. This belief has spurred an aggressive execution of the GWOT, including the invasion of Iraq.

Posted at 12:23pm on Nov. 16, 2007 Fred: Don't let U.N. control Internet
By Brad G
Fred Thompson has a post at Fred08.com today about the idea of the United Nations taking control of the Internet:
"Foreign government officials from around the world meeting at a U.N.-sponsored conference in Brazil actually discussed this notion last week. It didn’t get much attention, but as we all know, that’s how bad ideas get traction."

Posted at 10:04pm on Nov. 9, 2007 Fred: Not afraid of the third rail
By Brad G
Fred Thompson unveiled his plan for Saving and Protecting Social Security, and it certainly echoes what he's been saying on the stump.
And although the details are important, what's more important to me is that Fred is talking about this issue at all. ABC News' Jake Tapper said it well:

Posted at 11:05am on Nov. 5, 2007 Fred Thompson: "Philip Martin hasn't raised any improper funds"
By Brad G
Standing outside NBC studios in Washington yesterday after his 42 minutes with Tim Russert, Republican Presidential candidate Fred Thompson answered questions from other media outlets about his friend and fundraiser, convicted (28 years ago) drug dealer Philip Martin.
A producer for FOX News Chief Political Correspondent Carl Cameron caught the interview on tape and it has since been posted to Campaign Carl's blog. Of course, the first sentence on the video is possibly the most important: "Philip Martin hasn't raised any improper funds."

Posted at 12:19pm on Oct. 31, 2007 Fred to do "Meet the Press" Sunday-- will Mitt and Rudy follow suit?
By Brad G
Fred Thompson's campaign manager sent out an email yesterday announcing the candidate's upcoming appearance on Meet the Press. As an avowed FredHead, I think he needs this now. He's not been getting much press attention lately, and facing Russert for an hour is bound to generate some headlines (of course, that could be a double-edged sword, depending on his performance).

Posted at 2:55pm on Oct. 23, 2007 Fred Announces Border/Immigration Plan (and I think you're going to like it)
By Brad G
Fred Thompson announced his Border Security/Immigration Reform Plan today. The outline is below; there are more particulars at Fred08.com.
In the post-9/11 world, immigration is much more of a national security issue. A government that cannot secure its borders and determine who may enter and who may not, fails in a fundamental responsibility. As we take steps to secure our borders and enforce our laws, we must also ensure that our immigration laws and policies advance our national interests in a variety of areas, and that the immigration process itself is as fair, efficient, and effective as possible.

Posted at 10:50am on Oct. 16, 2007 I want Rush back on my TV (with video from this morning)
By Brad G
I like Fox & Friends; I watch about a half hour every morning as I get ready for work. But it's really saying something when the best two segments I've seen in awhile are a telephone interview. Of course, it's not surprising when that interview is with Rush Limbaugh.
So why is Rush not on TV? Are cable executives afraid? Surely not; surely he's just got too much money to worry about it. But I tell you a one- or two-hour replay of him taping the radio show would kill in prime time. I know I'm a fan, but I usually can't manage to get in even a few minutes of listening time during the day.

Posted at 10:37pm on Oct. 15, 2007 Fred takes a shot at Rudy
By Brad G
Evidently he's tired of watching Mitt and Rudy fight over taxes and each other's records, so today Fred Thompson came out swinging at frontrunner Rudy Giuliani.
On Your World with Neil Cavuto today, Fred responded to a question about Giuliani by saying "I don't think the mayor has ever claimed to be a conservative." He also pointed out Hizzoner's endorsement by the New York Liberal Party and his support of Mario Cuomo for governor (running against George Pataki).

Posted at 5:31pm on Oct. 11, 2007 FactCheck.org on the debate: Fred checks out, Rudy doesn't, Mitt might not
By Brad G
Up front: I'm a Fred Head.
FactCheck.org published their analysis of the latest Republican Presidential debate yesterday. (Oddly enough, for a site called FactCheck.org, they originally said the debate was in Detroit, not Dearborn.)
The headline is that Rudy exaggerated several points about Hillary and that they couldn't catch Fred making any factual errors or misrepresentations.

Posted at 1:30am on Oct. 8, 2007 Fred Thompson's "Laziness" Mocked on SNL
By Brad G
About 24 hours ago Saturday Night Live featured a sketch designed to mock Fred Thompson's reported laziness. Darrell Hammond, who also plays Bill Clinton, portrayed Fred.
The sketch featured "Thompson" sitting behind a desk talking about how badly he wants to President ("on a scale of 1-10, about a 6"), how much hard work it is to campaign, and how he doesn't like people. His solution was to introduce Sam Waterston, a former castmate on Law & Order portrayed on SNL by Fred Armisen, to be his stand-in campaigner.
The sketch ended with Thompson asking for applause, a take-off on his asking an Iowa audience for applause at the end of a stump speech last week.
While the sketch does reinforce all of the Fred-bashing we've heard over the past several weeks, it's still a badge of honor of sorts to be mocked on SNL. All in all, things could have been much worse for Fred. Think of the sketch as a live version of Adam Nagourney's piece on Fred from yesterday, but funnier and fairer!
Here's the video:
