By cbs

The writing is on the wall. Just like Fredheads had to finally acknowledge there was no conceivable path for their candidate to win the nomination after South Carolina, I think Romney supporters need to stand up and face the music. Our man just ain't gonna win it this time. It pains me to say it, but it doesn't do anybody any good to deny the facts.

Now we all know that Romney has the means to stretch it out and prolong the race further, but I don't think doing so does him or the party any good. One, I think it would start to make Romney look petty. It would give further evidence to those who think he is willing to do anything, spend anything to win. Now I don't believe that. I think Romney got in this race because he genuinely thought he has something to offer his country. But there comes a point where you have to recognize that the people don't want/aren't ready for the services and skills you are offering them. I think Romney has crossed that point.

With McCain's victory tonight in Florida, the Republican nominee has effectively been decided. I, along with many others, prematurely wrote him off as a dead man walking months ago. I honestly don't know how he was able to turn it around, but he did, and in doing so he has shown an incredible amount of grit, determination, and ability (maybe he should steal Romney's turnaround theme?). Regardless of who you originally supported in this race, congratulations are due tonight to Sen. McCain, his staff, and his supporters for pulling off an impressive and surprising string of victories. The fact of the matter is, he has earned the nomination.

Posted at 9:57pm on Jan. 24, 2008 The Earmark Crusade: A Fruitless Cause

By cbs

While the campaign against earmarks is being led by many individuals whom I respect and admire, I feel it's time someone stood up and laid out the facts about earmark reform and what it means for the conservative movement. For those of you who want to avoid reading any further and just want to hear the short summary, here it is: an earmark victory will not advance the conservative movement much, if at all.

Posted at 2:30pm on Dec. 29, 2007 McCain flip-flops on Romney?

By cbs

Given John McCain's decision to go after Mitt Romney's character and integrity, I'd be curious to see how he (or his supporters) walk this series of statement's back?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QA7JTDjG-Po

Was McCain's judgement wrong then or is it wrong today? Would it be correct to say that McCain liked and admired the more moderate Romney than he does the conservative one today? What does that say about John McCain?

By cbs

Give a 1-2 sentence description why your ideal ticket is best:

Romney-Giuliani

Rather than go for a southerner, Romney should pick Giuliani in order to increase his cross-over appeal. Running as the competent/executive/outsider ticket might be Republicans best bet in 2008.

Posted at 11:44pm on Dec. 18, 2007 Confession: I like Huckabee

By cbs

I realize that admitting this puts me on the path to sure criticism, ridicule, and possible banishment from RedState (if any of you see Moe coming, please give me a heads up!), but the fact of the matter is, despite his many apparent flaws, I can't help but like Mike Huckabee. Here's why:

He's done the impossible - Did anyone consider this guy a serious contender, let alone the possible frontrunner, a year ago? For the past year he ignored all the experts on the sidelines who were saying, "well, he's a great speaker but he lacks....money, spends too much time on tv, doesn't have a campaign organization, etc, etc." As we look back now I think he deserves a lot of credit for ignoring the pundits and for plugging along, running his campaign his way. On a shoestring budget, a second-tier staff, and little more than a wing and a prayer, he kept running the only way he could. He knew that his one unique asset and strength was himself and he stuck with it - and it's paid off.

By cbs

Huckabee isn't my first, second, or even third top choice among Republican candidates. Reasons to be concerned over his candidacy have been discussed, some might say, ad nauseam, on this and other conservative sites. Many of these objections over Huckabee are certainly legitimate and deserve to see the light of day. However, I've noticed over the past few months that many of us, myself included, have resorted to using some over-the-top, uncharitable and uncompromising rhetoric as we argue for our preferred candidates and against those we're not as excited about.

Posted at 12:48pm on Dec. 5, 2007 What ever happened to the real Fred Thompson?

By cbs

If the same Thompson who did this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DdAm6UY4xOE&feature=relatedMichael was running today, he would be the frontrunner.

Where did they put that Fred and why in the world did they replace him with this Fred http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zv2bFzeiak?

He's still my number 2 preference, but man, I can't help but think what could have been....

Posted at 5:32pm on Oct. 18, 2007 The Democrat Majority Insurance Plan - H.R. 900

By cbs

Legislation that would set Puerto Rico on a path to become the 51st state is poised to move in the House as early as next Tuesday. The bill, HR 900, would allow Puerto Rico to hold a vote next year on whether to end its territorial status. A later vote would be held to determine statehood or independence. While the two stage plebiscite the legislation lays out sounds innocuous enough, it is actually a carefully contrived effort to get a majority of Puerto Ricans to vote in favor of statehood, despite the fact that Puerto Ricans have repeatedly refused to do despite several attempts in the past.
