Leading Islamic doctor would rather kill or disfigure British Muslim children...

...than let them take "haram" vaccinations for measles, mumps and rubella. Not only do Islamic extremists want to take society back a few centuries, the field of medicine would be on that same backward ride. From the Independent:

A leading Islamic doctor is urging British Muslims not to vaccinate their children against diseases such as measles, mumps, and rubella because they contain substances making them unlawful for Muslims to take.

Dr Abdul Majid Katme, head of the Islamic Medical Association, says almost all vaccines contain un-Islamic "haram" derivatives of animal or human tissue, and that Muslim parents are better off letting childrens' immune systems develop on their own.

Dr Katme, an NHS psychiatrist, said: "If you breastfeed your child for two years - as the Koran says - and you eat Koranic food like olives and black seed, and you do ablution each time you pray, then you will have a strong defence system."

The Department of Health and the British Medical Association have criticised Dr Katme, saying his suggestions are likely to increase infection rates of children in Muslim communities. Other Muslim groups have also condemned the suggestion.

Some pieces of news simply defy further commentary, except to say that this is another example in Britain of the ongoing clash between Islamic fundamentalists and present-day British society. We'll see if the Muslim Council of Britain responds to this, and whether or not the Independent or others will be called Islamophobic for spotlighting the good doctor's stupidity. After all, the MCB has been known to throw down the Islamophobia card a time or two.

Update: But not this time. According to the London Times:

Dr Shuja Shafi, a spokesman for the health and medical committee of the Muslim Council of Britain, said: "In terms of ingredients in vaccines, there are so many things that are probably haram, but in the absence of an alternative we are allowed to take it for the sake of our health."

Good on the MCB. I'm glad they took that position. I know Dr. Katme isn't his mullah's keeper, but he is brother-in-law to Omar Bakri Mohammed, the radical cleric "who founded the now disbanded Al-Muhajiroun group of radical Muslims, is living in Lebanon after being barred from the UK." Katme reportedly "does not share Bakri's extremist views." Except for "haram" vaccinations, perhaps.

Second update: I forgot to give liberal japonicus (fondly known as LJ) a hat tip for the London Times link, but just half a hat tip. I will not link to his site, Taking It Outside (formerly known as Hating on Charles Bird) until his smear of me is removed from one of his posts.

from time to time some "fundamentalist" group in this country comes out against modern medicine and is usually pilloried for it! The reaction to this stance, or more specifically, the rationalization justifying it, will be instructive. The bottom line will be, "Don't defy Islam!"

Maybe the British Medical Socity should take away Dr. Katme's medical licence for this kind of statement.

Every religion has its nutjobs, I can think of a few prominent, influential Christian ones. Is there anything to this post other than a shallow dig at Muslims?

The dig is at extremist Muslims, not Muslims. It is a small example of Britain's problem with intolerant hardline Muslims who refuse to assimilate into modern British society. Dr. Katme's brother-in-law is no small part of that problem.

influential Christian [nutjobs] who advocate mass murder. Be quick about it sonny or you get to meet the Moe man.

You've just about worn out your welcome. It's 6:15pm MST. Your welcome will be completely worn out at about 6:30.
