Singing Kumbaya With Kofi

Kofi Annan has put us on official notice. He says "The US must not sacrifice its democratic ideals to fight terrorism." I appreciate Kofi's sentiments the way I appreciate the punch line of any good joke. I think the shorthand version of Kofi's remarks would read "The US must not fight terrorism."
On a day when fellow UN member nation Iran opened a conference to question whether Nazi Germany actually killed Jews in gas chambers, Kofi Annan's protest speech becomes even more hilarious. It's the context that sometimes lends humor to good knee-slapper of a joke.
Iran may hold an occasional show case election, but they certainly don't have many democratic principals that Kofi could hypocritically demand that they go forth and honor. Iran's deployment of Hezbollah to Lebanon, Iraq, and many other places worldwide doesn't seem to have raised Kofi's hackles in the slightest. Hezbollah received Intel data from UNIFIL during their last fight with the Israelis over the firing of short range missiles at Israel's civilian population.
Perhaps Kofi objects to our presence in Iraq and Afghanistan. He probably considers it competition. I imagine he would prefer that rape, pillage and war crimes become the monopoly of UN Peacekeepers.
So Kofi Annan, one of the most corrupt and amoral men to ever preside over the UN, wants the US to make sure it doesn't fight terrorism in a way that violates our democratic principles. I'd like to thank Kofi for his generous concern. But as the women and young girls in The Congo getting raped by UN peacekeepers would put it. "Stop it Kofi, you're killing me."
My Favorite Liberal Colmnist; Ralph Peters sums up Kofi's contributions to world peace and democratic ideals thusly. Welcome to the triumph of global hypocrisy.
