This is really too hysterically funny for words. Jason Leopold, the "investigative journalist" who took truthout.org for a ride with his Karl Rove Will Be Indicted on Monday story, has just published another one, again on truthout:

An indictment first reported by Truthout said to be connected to Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald's Plame investigation remains sealed, and Fitzgerald continues to work on the leak case.
The indictment, 06 cr 128, was returned by the grand jury hearing evidence in the CIA leak case between May 10 and May 17 - right around the time that Truthout reported, based on sources close to the investigation, that Karl Rove had been indicted on charges of perjury and lying to investigators.
However, that indictment remains under seal more than three months after it was filed - an unusually lengthy period of time, according to experts in the field of federal law. The indictment could be dismissed down the road, meaning the public may never get the opportunity to learn the identity of the defendant or the substance of the criminal case.
These experts said the length of time the indictment has been under seal suggests that the defendant named in the complaint is cooperating with an ongoing investigation and may have accepted a plea agreement.

It's pretty obvious that Messrs. Leopold and Ash are attempting to recover their "journalistic integrity," as if they ever had any. If, in the end, Sealed v. Sealed turns out to be United States v. Rove, Mr Leopold's original story is vindicated, and he was simply misinformed about the date of the indictment, or that Karl Rove started cooperating with the Special Prosecutor and changed the dynamics. And Marc Ash, the executive director of truthout, co-signed today's article, which would indicate a fair amount of support for Mr Leopold, whose journalism he defended even after the original story didn't pan out. Perhaps there really is something behind Mr Leopold's original.
But while the Usual Suspects will probably be smiling about this story, it wouldn't surprise me if they didn't do much touching of the story; they feel burned by the original last May. As of this posting, left-wing sources such as the Lost Kos, MyDD and the even further, whacko left My Left Wing have not yet commented on it; I guess that they're going to treat this one with kid gloves -- or asbestos gloves -- after being burned last time. I certainly laughed about it then!
Any bets as to whether I get to laugh at them again? :)

Spending money on bombs and missiles and the war in Iraq and tax cuts for the rich, that's what "could better be spent* helping starving children, curing AIDS" or paying for medical care. But spending money on prosecutors that could hurt the Bush Administration, why that's just justice!

This whole witch hunt is a spectacular waste of time and public resources that could better be spent* helping starving children, curing AIDS, or investigating the real criminal, Joe Lieberman.
