Bitter? Da**** Right I'm Bitter -- Sending A Message To John McCain

by David Hinz

The Problem:

Famously, Winston Churchill once said, "Democracy is a very bad form of government. Unfortunately all the others are so much worse." And so it is for Conservatives with the 2008 Presidential election. John McCain is a very bad choice for President, but all the others are so very much worse.

Each and every time that the good Senator from Arizona begins to re-earn the trust he has lost from the Conservative base, he does or says something to once again alienate that base. The two most recent demonstrations of this, of course, is his denunciation of the North Carolina Republican Party for running ads tying Barack Obama and the Rev Wright to two North Carolina Democrat Governor candidates; and his pandering in Louisiana in which he blamed the Bush Administration for the failures of the Hurricane Katrina aftermath while failing to mention the monumental failures of the local and state units of government (both of which, by the way, were totally Democrat.)

But, as mind-numbingly angry as this makes Conservatives, the alternatives, either a President Obama or President Clinton, are so much worse. Senator McCain appears unconcerned with the Republican base in his pursuit of independents and moderate Democrats, knowing full well that the base has no place else to go. It is time to send the good senator a message; a message that he cannot miss, and that will proclaim loud and clear our dissatisfaction with the candidate.

The Message:

I propose that each and every Conservative demonstrate his or her support for Senator McCain for President by purchasing a "McCain for President," bumper sticker, or better still, two. Then we should all affix those bumper stickers upside down -- as a clear message to the senator. As a former Navy flier, Sen McCain will understand that message only too well. As explained below, displaying an ensign or the American flag upside down is a message of danger. It means, "...a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property."

John McCain, we need your help.

Respect for flag

Respect for flag is the title given to Section 8 of the U.S. Flag Code, and it addresses this very issue. In fact, this issue is so important that it is the first article written in the Respect for Flag section. Here is the introduction and article (a) in Section 8 of the U.S. Flag Code.

No disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United States of America; the flag should not be dipped to any person or thing. Regimental colors, State flags, and organization or institutional flags are to be dipped as a mark of honor.
(a) The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.

A signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property! I cannot think of a better description of the situation we face in this election. The issues facing this nation, and the next occupant of the Oval Office, are among the most important we have ever faced.

Radical Islamic terrorism, energy independence, Socialized National Healthcare, Carbon Credits to offset Global Warming fears and massive tax increases all threaten to change the American way of life. The answers proposed by both Obama and Clinton will destroy our freedoms. We cannot contemplate what damage a Democrat President, along with a Democrat controlled Congress can inflict on this nation.

We must do all that we can do to achieve a McCain victory in November. But, we must make it clear to this candidate that we WILL be heard, that he WILL listen to the base -- or else.

IF enough Conservatives display their McCain stickers in the distress manner, eventually it will be noticed. First, one would hope, by the MSM, who would naturally draw attention to any form of protest against the senator. They would naturally perceive it as a challenge to the senator. We could explain, when asked, that we support the senator, to a point, but want to draw attention to the fact that our nation is in peril.

If enough of us take up this challenge, to send a message to the candidate, we might be able to breath new life into the conservative movement. If we can get his attention, he might see the wisdom in recognizing the importance of his conservative base.

I might just do that. Any others? We need a lot of us.

Fred Thompson, 2008

Let's start a movement. Can you see people at rallies holding up McCain signs upside down, and the MSM asking why?

I'll blog it (with appropriate references to this one, of course) and my order for John McCain stickers is forthcoming.

Oh -- and for any other readers: two stickers per vehicle is best. If you just use one and stick it on upside down, you won't look like you're protesting; you'll just look like an idiot.

Perhaps a McCain '08-'12 (McCain until 2012?) slogan indicating that we may only tollerate 4 years of this crap. I'm a little low in the creative juices. Maybe someone else can figure out how to make it slick or witty.

You know I'd just die to vote for a Zel Miller this election cycle. Or maybe, just maybe, a Lieberman candidacy.

"Hey, I call 'em like I see 'em. I'm a whale biologist."

Well shoot, there goes the party again. What's more, I thought Gov. Huckabee dropped out of the race but in no less than two weeks he's (a) launched HuckPAC and (b) began touring with McCain, whilst getting the MSM to plaster them together on the "Mangled Tour Express" bus. Sheesh!

So Full Disclosure -- Hillary had a goal Wednesday, to raise $10+ million in 24-hours. I kicked her campaign $5 while at the same time $10 to the NC GOP to keep that hard hitting TRUTHFULL ad running.

To date I have contributed a WHOPPING $0.00 to John McCain's 2008 campaign. A shame perhaps, as I sent money and my MI primary vote his way in 2000.

My how times have changed.

I'm going to try to score some free bumper stickers off of McCain's campaign AND then follow-through having surgically removed our Flag first.

McCain is the one in Distress and doesn't seem to care.

Final word -- and no, as my Californeeeya friend Luis asked me earlier -- this is not a threat but a p-r-o-m-i-s-e...

McCain + Huckabee = My "non'vote" for them, period. I can only stomach so much before disbelief sets in.

Hillary had a goal Wednesday, to raise $10+ million in 24-hours.

While Hillary is raising $10 million in 24 hours in a losing bid for her Party's nomination...It's taken McCain the entire time he's had since he secured the nomination to raise $11 Million!

Anyone have any doubts where this is going? If McCain wins this it will be despite McCain not because of him!

I suggest we support John McCain for President. But we need to first get his attention.

It took me a bit to get used to the idea. But you're right, we can support him and still send a message.

I hope I'll be able to forgive myself. Better yet, I hope he gets the message so I can be proud of my choice. To any of you out there who refuse to vote for him now, I have one suggestion. Just tell yourself you're voting against Hillary or Obama when you fill out the ballot for McCain. That's what I'm going to do when I vote for him, err. I mean against HillBama.

Tim Schieferecke

I understand how much better McCain is than either of the two Marxist Baby Killers. However a vote for McCain is a vote for a Republican Party which believes Americans are stupid and weak. Therefore I hope a Conservative steps forward (Duncan Hunter, J.C. Watts, Alan Keyes, Sarah Palin), to offer a ballot choice. I doubt any of them have what it takes to do this, however. And No, I don't care if this hands the WH to the Democrats.

-- that's what I saw in passing yesterday. Wouldn't be half surprised if we ended up with a Bob Barr/Alan Keyes (Libertarian Party) or a Keyes/Barr (Conservative Party) ticket this fall.

Such temptation!

It says more about your sensitivity to race than McCain "clearly" saying what you feel he meant. He said it was "out of touch with reality." I understand why people might be upset with that comment.

But he did not "clearly" say that its still 1963 in Dixie. And that level of sensitivity is not usually an attribute of the right. There's no need to make up something he didn't say. There's plenty to talk about that he did "clearly" say.

I totally disagree with this upside-down bumpersticker idea, but I LOVE the "parked in GD America pew" one.

Y'all do realize that if/when McCain is elected, he's not going to feel as though he owes conservatives jack, don't you? It's not like he's been beholden to a hard-line agenda thus far; why would he do us any favors if we don't support him?

That's how politics works--big donors, lobbyists, and interests groups (and we are an interest group) of all kinds know this quite well. Treat the candidate right, and he/she will treat you right more often than not.
Crap on the candidate, and you won't get a seat at the table. I want my voice heard in a McCain Administration, so I make my support well-known (even though I quite simply can't afford to be a big donor and still put food on the table).

Just sayin', is all.

I agreed with what Rudy said about signing the pledge when he said that you take one pledge as a president. The president takes a pledge to defend the constiution of the United States and he shouldn't be taking pleges that could conflict with that. Besides I do think we need to raise taxes or lower spending, the current fiscal policy is insane.

increase will certainly end up raising taxes. Even politicians who pledge not to raise taxes end up raising taxes.

Every President we have had in my lifetime has raised taxes on occassion. Your worries about boxing a President in are unfortunately unfounded.

Besides, it is only by boxing in politicians on taxes can spending cuts ever materialize.

end up raising taxes" So they shouldn't take the pledge, I for one still believe in honesty. Its irresponsible in my mind to say you're not going to raise taxes. And McCan ran in the primary and got votes not having taken the plege and then he flipflopped and took it, but nobody's perfect.
