Debate Response by Senator David Vitter (R)LA
While I was pleasantly surprised by the results of this poll I personally thought that Brownback won the debate with Romney coming in a strong 2nd. Dr. Ron Paul and Duncan Hunter also did very well. I felt that Rudy and McCain only did average but by not losing the debate they still remain the two front runners with Romney coming in a distant third place among the declared candidates.
"Republican operatives agreed that the debate did nothing to shake up the crowded GOP field."
"They said Giuliani, the former New York City mayor, McCain, a four-term Arizona senator, and Romney, the ex-Massachusetts governor, remained the strongest contenders, with the most money and the best approval ratings in the polls more than eight months before the first 2008 national convention delegates are selected."
"Clearly the top three looked quite presidential," said Whit Ayres, a Republican pollster."
"Scott Reed, who ran Bob Dole's 1996 campaign, added: "McCain showed a little energy. Romney showed he's very polished. And Giuliani started to clear up some of his issues with the base of the party."

If you closely examine Giuliani's answers in the debate he did very well except when he got to the Abortion question. It's still just a two man race between Rudy and McCain only Fred Thompson has the ability to change that. I know some feel that Romney may move up some and they could be right however in the end YouTube has more video on Mitt Romneys constant flip-flopping than the entire stock film footage of TV LAND and TBS combined.
Mitt Romney: Biggest flip/flopper of all time?
Romney may have flip-flopped on none other than his favorite book.
http://www.savethegop.com/2007/05/01/mitt-romney-biggest-flipflopper-of-...
"On Fox News today, Romney said his favorite book "has to be the Bible," and his second favorite was L. Ron Hubbard's "Battlefield Earth."
"But a Texas newspaper said only two days ago that Romney had heralded his favorite book as "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," and he said so himself on Nightline in late January. His Myspace.com and Facebook.com profiles have the Mark Twain classic on the top of his list of favorite books and doesn't even mention the Bible or Hubbard's "Battlefield Earth."
If this guy(Romney)gets our nomination I will gladly vote for him but the Clinton Machine will crush him. I'm a Rudy guy until if and when Fred Thompson gets into the race. If that occurs then Fred Thompson can be President and Rudy Giuliani can be his Attorney General.
That poll is laughable. It looks more like a national poll taken prio to the debate. You can't really beleive that crap.

I know that most Internet polls allow people to vote multiple times (voting in the same internet poll multiple times is something of a hobby of mine). I found Drudge's results interesting, and thought that others might as well.

I've recommended this diary. I've got a newfound respect for you. And I apologize for my tone yesterday. But I wish that people would say which Republican they're for and why rather than which one their against and why.
The constant Romney-bashing on this site drives me crazy and I'm suspecting that people on McCain's, Brownback's, and Huckabee's payroll are behind some of it.
I've already seen how vicious the Brownback people can be. For a candidate with only a "hail mary" shot at winning, you'd think that he was in a dead heat with Giuliani based on how his people are acting.
You santimoniously complain about Romney bashing and then you go out of your way to take a sweeping, unsupported, off-topic swipe at Brownback and his supporters. You are either a fool or a hypocrite.
Is only among California voters.

quality or even the outcome of the poll. The point is, that from your title and even in the body of your blog, it appears that you are representing this to be a national poll.
Just a matter of clarification.

Rudy won this poll although he clearly didn't win the debate but he sure didn't lose the debate. I felt that he was average.
He actually did a fine job except on that one question. He'll do better next time out.
sampling of voters on a NATIONAL basis, a REGIONAL basis (and if so what region), or was it California only? Also, do you have a link to the actual poll so we can look at the internals?
The point, which if I didn't know you better I'd say you were avoiding (I'm not saying that), is that from your blog it appears that this is a NATIONAL result. It's not. I don't have the details, and I don't have the time or inclination to look them up, but I'm sure this is a poll taken in California. Don't know how big the sample size was, don't know if they are likely voters or just people on the street. It could be just an internet poll for all I know.
Bottom line, could we please get some clarification? Thank you.

Here's a breakdown of the Poll. Its a poll of 2,400 CALIFORNIA residents. If you can't beat em, fool em.

Perhaps one of the RS readers remembers it more accurately. Seems like I heard that Dubya had an exchange with some idiot reporter once that went something like this:
Bush: "I don't read half of what you guys write."
Reporter: "That's okay. We don't listen to half of what you say."
Bush: "Yeah I could tell that from the half that I read."
Demophilus,
For a while it seemed the we were getting flooded by Romneybots' poorly reasoned praises of their guy and similarly poorly reasoned denunciations of other Republican candidates. I think they caught on that it wasn't a persuasive tactic, and you need to learn the same lesson about your numerous and breathless posts favoring Giuliani.
I lean toward nominating Giuliani, and think most Giuliani supporters would be embarrassed to be associated with your tactics. At first I thought you were a moby trying to discredit Giuliani. Now I believe your support for Giuliani is sincere, but it's like a schoolgirl-crush where you believe and repeat any silly story if it's favorable to Giuliani, and refuse to consider valid criticisms of Giuliani.
This blog is a case in point. The poll did in fact have good news for Giuliani, as Adam pointed out in his intelligent presentation of the relevant subgroup results. However your misleading statements about the poll only loses crediblity. I'll be charitable about your intentions, and assume the schoolgirl-crush explanation that you were just so happy about the poll number you saw that you didn't bother reading what it was really about - "a story too good to check." However your weasley response when called on the facts gives justification to believing you were deliberately trying to con us.
Hint: quality not quantity. When you don't have the time or inclination to check your facts and logic, it's couterproductive to go ahead and post some nonsense. Wait until you can post something that persuades more people than it alienates.

Please do us all a favor and learn how to embed your links into text? I mean, your stuff looks reasonably well researched and all, but it looks like crap with all these links hanging all over the place.
Just a friendly suggestion.

I thought he looked ordinary -- and I think he's somebody who needs to be extraordinary (and, frankly, I think he can be extraordinary).
I like Romney and think he did as well as anybody. The only candidate who I think surprised to the upside was Sen. Brownback.
I am not sure how objective people are in judging the debate. There are probably some who think their candidate won simply because they already agreed with their views. Giuliani is the only liberal Republican while conservative supporters split their votes among the others.
I agree that Romney will get crushed by Shillary. I honestly think our one chance to win is to go with Rudy who can take NJ and the upper Midwest and make her fight for NY and Cali. I thought McCain was WAY HYPER for a president, he was overly scripted and his timing was off. Mitt would be a great Cabinet Secretary. I think Brownback is a moron on his Iraq/Biden plan. Ron Paul is simply irritating to listen to and hopefully will be gone now..

Drudge's poll showed 2 winners, Romney then Giuliani. You can only vote once. LGF and Hotair's polls also showed these two winning, at least as of last night.
Good to hear. Rudy is still my favorite -- a fiscal conservative who can beat Clinton or Obama. He was put on the spot, as he should be, about his pro-choice stance. But since I am also pro-choice, that's not a problem for me.
Ron Paul is interesting, and I agree with his firm economic conservatism. But isolationism is just not an option today with radical islam on the rise. He appears far too inflexible about not using military force.
Romney once again comes across as slick and carefully fabricated to appeal to the lastest focus-group results. He's the only Republican candidate that gives me the creeps.
Brownback, Huckabee and Tancredo raised their hands when asked if anyone didn't believe in evolution. A good "spot the looney" question, but fortunately none of them are likely to be our next president.
Here are the internals.
Important information which the original poster left out. First, this is only Californians. Second, this is NOT just Republicans. Thus, we have a sample that is 53% pro-choice and 30% Democratic.
However, in the subsample of the 45% who are CA Rs, here are the results:
Giuliani 33
McCain 17
Romney 14
And among CA pro-lifers:
Giuliani 26
Romney 16
McCain 13
Hunter 12
Note that both of those have bigger Margins of Error than the 5.7% of the overall poll. Thus, the 3-way tie for second in the pro-lifers is very much within the margin of error as is the 2-way tie among Rs. Nevertheless, among CA Rs and pro-lifers Giuliani still "won" the debate.

This is a California poll, not a national poll. Worse, the number of people in the poll who thought he won was significantly less than the number of people who have polled as his supporters. The same is true of McCain. Only Romney and the others had more people think they won than who came into the debate supporting them.
They that are with us are more than they that are against us.
