Posted at 2:59pm on Feb. 13, 2008 Searching for the "New Republican Party"

By DGaines

As I cast my eyes across the landscape of conservative Republican politics I see a land divided, not so much because we differ but rather because we have no unifying force which draws us together. This is not a new phenomenon. Since the time of Abraham Lincoln, Republicans have been a varied assortment of competing interests as diverse as the United States we inhabit.

In the absence of such a conflict as the cold war, or a Presidency we detest, conservatives have grown fat and lackadaisical. We lost the conservative ideas and energy last embodied in the 1996 1994 “Contract with America”. Instead of using the energy of 1994 to forge a new Republican political landscape we looked in the mirror, grew proud with our new found status as majority party and became the enemy. Within a few years we were the party of big government, corruption, earmarks and moral failure. I blame no one in particular for this, it was the failing of many, but it happened and we must know our history or we are indeed destined to repeat it.

Posted at 12:15am on Feb. 10, 2008 An Appeal to Huckabee Supporters

By DGaines

Look, I support Mike Huckabee like you do. So that’s why I’m asking that you refrain from the following:

Don’t get vicious toward another candidate or his supporters. First this doesn’t help party unity much, and second it only makes them get nasty toward you which makes them further doubt or dismiss your arguments.

Next: While it’s ok to post Huck’s victories and information about his record. Be restrained with the bragging. Think back to the playground when you were little, no one likes a guy who brags. I know there has been a lot of anti-Huck sentiment here and after a while it makes you want to kick back, but remember that a part of persuading someone is diffusing the situation. If you have to – be the bigger person and back off.

Posted at 2:36pm on Jan. 15, 2008 Fred's equivocal conservatism.

By DGaines

Fred’s equivocal conservatism.

It has been difficult to write this article because Fred is my second choice behind Huck. That said I have found it equally difficult to see Huck repeatedly bludgeoned for his various policy changes, record inconsistencies and the fact that he appeals to evangelical voters. While I suspect that this diary will be unpleasant to most who support Fred and while I don’t think it will change anyone’s mind. In the interests of balance and my mea culpa made, I spew it forth. *cough*

Posted at 3:51pm on Jan. 11, 2008 Why Mike Huckabee will win South Carolina

By DGaines

Why Mike Huckabee will win SC.

1. DEBATE FACTOR:

By any assessment Mike came in second or in the eyes of many won, the recent South Carolina debate. Numerous news stories and Blogs reflect this consensus. Even those who don’t like him admit he did little to hurt his chances. Mike’s “Gates of Hell” comment is getting a lot of media play which helps him with those who have criticized his toughness. Both Mike and Fred will get a bump from the debate while McCain suffers the most. Mitt and Rudy’s numbers stay the same. Doubt will soon be removed by the polls.

Posted at 3:25am on Dec. 19, 2007 Huckabee is to the Right of all the Candidates.

By DGaines

The raging pens of the Huckahaters have declared that Mike Huckabee is a faux conservative; a Democrat in Republican clothing; a tax raising, free trade wrecking Christian crazy man. This is to provide some perspective to the enormous amount of vitriol directed toward Huckabee over the last few weeks.

In addition, I will compare each candidate in several areas. I know this is heavy reading and some of the Huckahaters may just dismiss it out of hand but I hope it serves to balance the information on the issues.
