A couple of observations:
First from the Republican side the most interesting thing is that Ron Paul has spent more per vote than any other candidate. Interestingly enough Ron's largest contributing Metro Area was Los Angeles-Long Beach followed by Austin-San Marcos. Link here. If he could add Santa Fe New Mexico I would be consumed by the idea that all his supporters are weed smoking dilettantes.
Second also on the Republican side Mitt Romney has spent a great deal per vote. His top financial areas of support are in Boston and Salt Lake City, no real surprises there. What an examination of his contributions does tell us is that his strongholds are among business types and Mormons. His top contributors list reads like a who's who of financial institutions. Link here. I am already enamored by the idea that ALL of Mitt's supporters wear white shirts and ties.
Next comes John McCain. Very much like Romney, McCain’s financial support comes most heavily from big liberal states and financial institutions. NO surprises here. The most interesting fact I noticed in John's contributions were many of the similarities they shared with Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani. See here. here. and here. It appears that the money establishment backed three horses in the Republican race. Smart business if you ask me. Still, it comforts me in the evenings to picture all the sleeping McCainiacs in their big-city homes, thrashing angrily in their sleep while they dream of waterboarding conservatives into true believers.
Finally Mike Huckabee has of course performed extremely well given his funding levels and resource strength. His biggest financial support comes from Arkansas and Texas. Each of his top metro areas and zip codes come from Arkansas, Texas, Florida or Georgia. Link here. It seems clear if you have more guns and bibles than fingers; use "ya'll" instead of "you all", and have ever listened to any two of John Piper, John Haggee or Charles Stanley then you voted for Mike Huckabee.
My only note for Democrats: Both Hillary and Barak's top sector of contributions comes from lawyers. See here. That alone should scare you.
*disclaimer for Paulites: I like Ron Paul better than many of the earmarking, fatcatting, big government Republicans currently in the House and Senate. I'm just not a dilettante
*disclaimer for Romney supporters: Being Mormon has far less to do with it than being a moderate from Massachusetts who tried to run as a newly minted SoCon. Four years from now might have been ok but it was too much, too soon.
*disclaimer for McCainiacs: I know..I know McCain is against waterboarding. It was meant to be funny...please don't hurt me.
*disclaimer for Huckabee supporters: At the end of the day it isn't the guns the taxes or the south. It's that he's too evangelical. Get over it, it's not likely to change.
*disclaimer for Democrats" Shoo shoo
