Posted at 6:56pm on Jul. 5, 2008 Obama's Snookered

By dglenn

While stumping in St. Louis today, Obama said that his plan for ending the Iraq war had remain unchanged and that he was "puzzled" by the reaction to his statement that he is, "...going to do a thorough assessment...When I go to Iraq and I have a chance to talk to some of the commanders on the ground, I'm sure I'll have more information and will continue to refine my policies...

By dglenn

Potentially so, according to an article in the Los Angeles Times. According to the article, Gavin Newsom, the Mayor of San Francisco (who doesn't require any introduction), has launched an exploratory committee to see if he could clinch the democratic party's nomination for the 2010 election. To get the nomination, he will get past a big field of other democrats, including former Gov. Jerry Brown, Lt. Gov. John Garamendi, and former Controller Steve Westly.

Posted at 11:48pm on Jun. 24, 2008 Jindal for VP - Here's Why

By dglenn

Despite the obvious reasons (he's too inexperienced, he's a rising star, etc.) for McCain to not choose Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal for his VP, there are several very good reasons for picking him. Here they are:
Reason #1: He's Catholic.
This helps with Hispanics, who are one of the fastest growing groups in America. Given that this election is likely to be close, keeping the Mountain-West states in the Republican camp, as well as possibly adding California, is going to help a lot, and a significant percentage of the population in these states is Hispanic. His Catholicism is also an advantage with Reagan dems and other blue collar voters, and that could cause the rust belt and a few other states to go red.

Posted at 6:51pm on May 30, 2008 Mixed News for GOP Senate Races

By dglenn

According to recent polls done by Rassmussen Reports, there are some senate races that are looking like the GOP has a chance of winning, and some that look like the GOP might lose.

The numbers from polls taken in the past week and a half suggest that were the elections for these seats held today, the Republicans would lose 5 of the 7 seats where polling data was taken on or after May 19th. Of these 5, 3 would be tossups because the two candidates poll within the MOE, while the other 2 would be pickups for the democrats. The seats that the GOP is likely to retain are those of Jeff Sessions (R-AL) and Thad Cochran (R-MS). The tossups that are currently in the possession of the GOP are the seats held by Roger Wicker (R-MS), Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), and Norm Coleman (R-MN). The likely democratic pickups will come from Udall (D-CO) and Shaheen (D-NH).
