By DMEaton
George Will didn't "pinch hit for anyone."
Sitting next to me is George Will's "Statecraft As Soulcraft." Will is a prolific writer and a principled conservative. He bats for himself and does so often. He has even written a book called "Bunts."
Watching the 2008 game playout, this column swings and knocks in a winning run. Here, with a few knocks on the keys of Will’s computer, Will delicately destroys Fred Thompson’s claim to being the true conservative in the race.

He has been tough on immigration since his days in Reagan's justice department. Here is a good clip from his time as mayor.

John Edwards says Rudy Giuliani is "Bush on steroids." Finally Edwards has something smart to say.
Here is some more evidence of the ability for Giuliani to respond when questioned.

Btw, if anyone could respond with how I can post a video in an entry I would appreciate that.

If the video clip of Rudy calling a spade a spade with regard to David Dinkins resonates, it might be a good idea to check out the NYTime's article on Rudy and his race-relations in NY printed in today's paper.

Michael Powell writes:
"On Jan. 9, 1994 a caller reported a burglary at a Harlem mosque. The police ran in, Nation of Islam guards threw punches and broke an officer’s nose. The mosque’s minister, accompanied by the Rev. Al Sharpton, drove downtown to register their outrage with the police commissioner, a street theater ritual grudgingly tolerated by past mayors.

By DMEaton
How can we harness the power of the American people to hold government accountable?
I am playing with this idea so I am curious about any feedback the good people at Redstate might have.
In state X, Governor Y would tell each department head to set up a "wiki" for each department online. Department heads would also have to demonstrate exactly how the money allocated to their department is spent and make this public. Citizen Joe could then start commenting on a gov't program, summarizing it, telling its history, explaining how it could be more effective and other people could add on to that.

Posted at 3:12pm on Mar. 4, 2007 Should Conservatives Support Barack Obama?!?
By DMEaton
No. I think he is wrong on many policies if not virtually all. But I just watched his Selma speech today and it was, hands down, one of the best speeches I have ever seen. He is going to win the Democratic nomination in JFK style. Conservatives should not fear his candidacy. We should embrace it. Watch the speech on C-Span or read it. He confronted the problems of victimization in the African-American community. He spoke of the need for the "Joshua" generation to hearken back to the lessons of the "Moses" generation, including having self-respect. At one point he argued that it "shouldn't be considered white to have good conjugation of verbs." America needs his positive message to heal its racial wounds. His campaign could really make progress on improving the lives and hope of many Americans who need it. He is wrong on the issues but right on the general idea of race.

By DMEaton
Part two of a four-part series
We conservatives will never be able to protect the unborn, restore the prominence of the American family, and replace the welfare state unless we achieve minor victories. We need small successes that will earn us back the trust of the electorate.
In my last post (http://www.redstate.com/blogs/dmeaton/2007/feb/18/a_way_forward_a_memo_t...) I wrote about the two overarching conservative principles and policies that conservatives should make this campaign about: We should protect America abroad through a forceful national defense that works with international organizations but ultimately prioritizes the nation-state over world bodies. We should arrest the growth of government at home by working to simply stop growth of non-military spending. These are minimal and achievable goals, and the conservative movement needs small victories. Losing the next election will create major losses:

Part one of a four-part series
We conservatives will never be able to protect the unborn, restore the prominence of the American family, and replace the welfare state unless we achieve minor victories. We need small successes that will earn us back the trust of the electorate. Approaching this upcoming election the wrong way will leave us stranded in deep waters for a long time, especially because first time voters tend to stick with their party and there will be many more young voters this election. Democratic control of Congress and the White House in 2008 will bring about a series of disasters.

Posted at 8:34pm on Feb. 7, 2007 Democrats Care More About Protecting Roosters Than Children
By DMEaton
Today in the House Judiciary committee the Democrats attempted to send a bill to the floor that would prohibit the transporation of animals across state lines for purpose of animal fights. Republicans tried to ammend the bill by adding CIANA, a provision that would protect minor girls from being transported across state lines for the purpose of circumventing abortion laws in her home state.
CIANA passed the House twice last Congress by wide bipartisan majorities.
The Democrats who rejected the amendment want to protect roosters more than our children and families.

By DMEaton
“In all fighting, the direct method may be used for joining battle, but indirect methods will be needed in order to secure victory.”
-Sun Tzu, The Art of War
Promoted from the blogs by Adam C because 1) this is quality writing and 2) we need more positive pieces on the 2008 candidates
UPDATED ON SEPTEMBER 13:
In order for me to become a conservative, the forces of good triumphed over the forces of evil through indirect methods. A product of a typical liberal Jewish family, I wanted Al Gore to win in 2000, though John McCain intrigued me at the time. My support for strong family values, low taxes, and a firm national defense did not come about overnight. It started by first volunteering for a moderate in the form of Governor Bob Ehrlich out of high school. Once immersed among conservatives I started to appreciate their logic on several subjects. I agreed with the Bush Doctrine immediately following September 11 but still clung to liberal social principles. Nevertheless, by listening to Conservatives more and reading more of the literature slowly over time I became a true believer. So I speak with experience when I say that converts to conservative ideology will come around surely (albeit slowly) if they are approached indirectly. If their beliefs structures are attacked head on they will most likely recoil and defend themselves like snakes. As Alexander Hamilton wrote in the Federalist papers, “Men often oppose a thing, merely because they have had no agency in planning it, or because it may have been planned by those whom they dislike.”
