By Doc Holliday
The UK Conservative Party continues to crush Gordon Brown's Labour party. We know about the blowout wins in local elections, including the tremendous victory over "Red Ken" Livingstone in London. And now we have a major win in a Parliamentary by-election. http://uk.reuters.com/article/UKNews1/idUKL2219154920080523
I have never been a huge fan of David Cameron, but there is no question he has become a very successful Tory leader so far. What I don't like about him and the Tories is that they are just not conservative or libertarian enough for me. I realize the UK is not the US, the culture is different, but these Tories don't remind me of Thatcherism very much.

Posted at 1:48am on Apr. 7, 2008 I could not find an open thread
By Doc Holliday
but I figured someone has to post this. Here is a liberal, gun-hating Christian Democrat, State Representative Monique Davis berating what I hear is a militant in your face atheist jagoff named Rob Sherman.
here is the audio:

here is a small amount of context from a fellow left winger. It is hard to find unbiased context in Chicago.

Posted at 1:37am on Jan. 12, 2008 Fred should run against Bush on 2A
By Doc Holliday
If Fred Thompson wants to save Republicans from another popularity hit, he should tomorrow come out and take the Bush administration to task on its poor Second Amendment record.
You did not know the Bush administration has a poor record on gun rights? Well, consider these facts:
1) George Bush said if the Clinton Gun Ban aka assault weapons ban were sent to his desk, he would sign it. http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/09/10/assault.weapons.ban/

Posted at 7:17pm on Jan. 3, 2008 What Rush said today
By Doc Holliday
As a long time listener of Rush's show, I think I can say what I believe he said today on his show. In fact, I am positive of what he said/meant today, but I realize others have as much ability to translate Rush as do I, but here is what I heard.
1) Rush is totally against Huckabee. Huck is not a conservative and there is no reason for this party to support him unless we as a conservative coalition have completely abandoned our principles.

Posted at 3:29am on Nov. 14, 2007 "RED HOT" diaries should always be open to comments
By Doc Holliday
I do not understand why certain RED HOT diaries are open to comments while others are not. The diarists are serious politicos, they make a serious effort to provide insightful commentary and original ideas. Why would they not want feedback or commentary? I have seen some really good diaries that just go off into the netherworld because there is simply now way to sustain them, or debate their content.

Posted at 3:05pm on Oct. 21, 2007 Saving the coalition is really simple, but probably impossible
By Doc Holliday
I know how to save a coalition of conservative Republicans that can win national elections. The theory makes so much sense to me, yet I do not think it will work. It could work because it is the only thing that CAN work, but it can't work because people will not likely follow it.
The way to save the Republican coalition is for all the battling factions to REDUCE their claims on government. When you have factions who only care about themselves, who keep tabs on "wins" with a ledger, you get what we have, a party in turmoil. What the factions need to do is stop trying to take over the party and start scaling back their demands on our leaders and the federal government.

Posted at 3:48am on Oct. 15, 2007 The abortion divide
By Doc Holliday
It seems every other post on the presidential primary is based on abortion. We post day after day about who is "pro-life" and who is not. A sizeable percentage of this community seems to be basing their future votes on which candidate is the "strongest" on abortion.
I would assume that the vast majority of Red Staters oppose the practice of abortion. There are very few conservative Republicans of any stripe that are "pro-abortion". So the real question is what shall be done, and by whom, about an act we as a group disdain?

Posted at 1:44am on Sep. 29, 2007 Liberals smear Limbaugh to get payback for the MoveOn.org fury
By Doc Holliday
The left wing is still smarting from that Moveon.org Petraues (betray us) add. Now they are trying to get back at conservatives by smearing Rush Limbaugh. The left has cooked up a false controversy by claiming Limbaugh said "all soldiers who support an Iraq pullout are phony soldiers"
The problem with this smear on Limbaugh is it simply did not happen. The context of this attack is a little complicated because the left is taking a two word line out of a phone conversation. A caller to the Limbaugh show was discussing how the "drive-by media" seems to go out of their way to find soldiers who oppose the war to interview. Then Limbaugh said "phony soldiers" and the caller continued to speak over Rush.

Posted at 2:14am on Sep. 6, 2007 a great voice silenced
By Doc Holliday
Tonight a great voice was silenced. Luciano Pavarotti, a man with talent that could have only come from God, passed away. The contributions this man made to the arts and humanity were great and important.
Pavarotti will probably be best known for bringing opera music to the masses. We all know the Three Tenors concerts, millions have enjoyed them that will probably never see a full opera. But we should also remember his concerts for charity, one area he focused on was war refugees and children.
