By docj
Hey folks - been a while. Good to see y'all are doing well. Just thought I'd drop-in and give you some great news from Massachusetts.
Well, not really "great" as in "SUPER!" or "OUTSTANDING!" - more like "great" as in "Oh. My. God."

Posted at 3:10pm on Mar. 10, 2008 Dear Eliot, THANKS! Love and Kisses, Deval
By docj
Promoted by Dan McLaughlin. This is like hunting cows, folks.
I can only assume that Massachusetts Governor Deval "Together We Can!" Patrick (D) is sending a candy-gram to his Empire State colleague right about now. Or perhaps a StripperGram would be more appropriate, eh?
Here's a random sampling of stories making news in the Bluest State of the Union over the last few days...
Arraignment postponed for Patrick aide charged with sexual assault - sort of speaks for itself, but I have some more on the story here.

Posted at 12:28pm on Jan. 30, 2008 In which I likely speak my last with regard to the 2008 Presidential Campaign
By docj
From The Minority Report.
Life, as we all know, is about choices - and the choice to get involved in politics is one where there are, as we also all know, opportunities for both euphoric highs and unthinkable lows. For conservatives deep behind enemy lines, we know all too well about those lows and really not all that much about those highs. In fact, the last true “high” in politics I can recall feeling was on the evening of November 5, 2002 – when I heard on the radio that Massachusetts State Treasurer Shannon O’Brien had conceded the Governor’s race to Mitt Romney.

Posted at 11:36pm on Jan. 29, 2008 Have I mentioned that I *heart* Michael Graham?
By docj
Michael Graham has the 9 AM - Noon slot on WTKK in Boston. He's also a sometime contributor to NRO and his latest entry there sums up my feelings (aside from the fact that I quit drinking almost 2-years ago) on this evening perfectly.
I won't quote - feel free to read from the NRO link, it's a hoot.

Posted at 4:41pm on Jan. 29, 2008 Breaking: House passes "Stimulus" package...
By docj
Unspurprisingly, the US House of Representatives overwhelmingly voted to dump about $146B of other peoples' money into the economy in the name of Economic Stimulus™. The vote was 385-35.
Rumor has it that the mesaure may get stalled in the Senate - who seems to want to give more tax rebates to people who don't owe any federal taxes. So I wouldn't go making that downpayment on that 70-inch HighDef Plasma screen just yet, were I you.

Posted at 11:29am on Jan. 28, 2008 A question or two on the Romney/McCain Iraq food fight...
By docj
I make no apologies for being spectacularly unimpressed with what passes for "straight talk" these days - and it's obviously no secret where my heart lies in this matter. But there was a question or two that came to me in all this ever-ramping knife-fight over a 9-month old interview - to wit...
Can anyone envision McCain attacking a Democrat in such a manner? For any circumstance? Ever?

Posted at 2:12pm on Jan. 22, 2008 Jose Padilla gets 17-years.
By docj
I'll let the AP tell it their way...
Jose Padilla, once accused of plotting with al-Qaida to blow up a radioactive "dirty bomb," was sentenced Tuesday to 17 years and four months on terrorism conspiracy charges that don't mention those initial allegations.
Ladies and gentlemen, I present the next media-celebrity criminal - soon to rival Saint Mumia - Jose Padilla.

Posted at 11:17am on Jan. 18, 2008 No longer searching for Bobby Fischer.
By docj
Bobby Fischer, the first American-born officially-recognized world champion of Chess, has died, the result of kidney failure after a long illness. He was 64.
Born in Chicago and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., Fischer faced criminal charges in the United States for playing a 1992 rematch against Boris Spassky in Yugoslavia in defiance of international sanctions. In 2005, he moved to Iceland, a chess-mad nation and site of his greatest triumph.
As a champion, he used his eccentricities to unsettle opponents, but Fischer's reputation as a genius of chess was soon eclipsed, in the eyes of many, by his idiosyncrasies.

Posted at 11:35pm on Jan. 15, 2008 Well, a win is a win.
By docj
Mitt Romney, after a pair of pretty humiliating losses in Iowa and New Hampshire, went into Michigan - a state where the Romney name is pretty much gold - and won what looks to be a pretty comprehensive victory in the GOP primary (it's 39%-30%-16% with 62% reporting at 22:15 EST). So, he did what he had to do and now the campaign rolls into South Carolina (and to a much lesser extent Nevada) wiiiiiiiiiiiide open.

Posted at 8:36pm on Jan. 9, 2008 H/T Crank: Richardson Out.
By docj
AP: Richardson Ends Presidential Bid
New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson ended his campaign for the presidency Wednesday after twin fourth-place finishes that showed his impressive credentials could not compete with his rivals' star power.
Swell, the only other marginally sane Democrat is out of the race.

Posted at 4:15pm on Jan. 9, 2008 In which I respond to George Neumayr (Re: HB's RedHot)
By docj
I'm really not sure what case George Neumayr, editor of Catholic World Report, was trying to make in his AmSpec article cited by Hunter Baker in RedHot. But if he was trying to convince us that Mike Huckabee isn't at best a pro-life economic populist with big-government tendencies, he did a pretty lousy job.

Posted at 1:23am on Jan. 9, 2008 To the extent that exit polls are useful...
By docj
Update:Looks like Romney actually won among self-ID'd Republicans 35% to 34% according to CNN's updated exit poll numbers. H/T to A Texan.
First off, congratulations to Senator McCain and the McCainiacs. Looks like JMac is going to win a 5-6 percent victory over Mitt Romney - more-or-less in line with the latest polling (unlike the Democrats, evidently) - everyone else falls far back in the pack. Enjoy the victory, John.
Personally I don't get it, of course. I simply cannot understand the love affair New Hampshire, and large segments of the GOP in general, has with John McCain - but it's there, it's real, and it's a force to be dealt with. And the other campaigns had better start dealing with it with all deliberate speed.
Now, on to the interesting nuggets in CNN exit poll of the GOP NH Primary...

Posted at 10:21am on Jan. 6, 2008 Man, I'm *old*!
By docj
Just noticed this morning that my account is 3 years, 3 days old today! Wow, didn't know I was such an old fart around these parts.
Given that, I'd like to use that as an opportunity to thank the folks at RedState, past and present, from Erick and the Directors to Jeff, Moe, Neil and all the Editors who keep the joint clean on a daily basis to all of my fellow commenters and posters.
Cheers -
