Shut. It. Down.

Additional commentary at The Minority Report.

There is only one appropriate response for this:

Congress likely will hold off on sending President Bush money for Iraq until early next year, pushing the Pentagon to the brink of an accounting nightmare and deepening Democrats' conflict with the White House on the war.

Democrats say the tough approach is needed.

Oh, so a tough approach is needed, eh? Well, how about this...

It is time to shut down the United States Congress.

"Everybody knows that the president is stuck in his place, a place where he wants a 10-year war," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said.

Uh, Speaker-in-law? You have now tried, 40-times by Politico's count, to play Commander-in-Chief. You have failed. Events on the ground are not convenient for you, I know, so you feel you have to throw this Hail Mary pass to End The War!!™.

Well, here's the thing - I don't think you have the stones to go through with it. Which is why I believe the GOP should shut-down you're already Doing Nothing legislative body until and unless you stop the games and fund the soldiers.

Or you can pass a straight up/down vote on ending the war immediately. Good luck with that one.

Democrats say, the Pentagon can eat into its $471 billion annual budget without being forced to take drastic steps.

Well, sez you. Pity y'all don't run the Department of Defense, though. The folks at the Pentagon seem to think differently, and I'm going with their judgment. YMMV.

"The days of a free lunch are over," said Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.

Has there ever been a time when Up-Chuck Schumer actually elevated the level of any debate? No? So given that, let me put this in terms you can understand, Chuck - drop dead.

You are a member of the party of the never-ending, taxpayer-financed, ever-expanding free lunch for the lazy and the layabout. You are a member of the party who has given us The New Deal™ and the Great Society™, whose legacy is the decimation of entire generations of people through ludicrous wealth transfer policies. And you are a member of the party pushing for a new "get your Viagra and someone else will pay for it" government take-over of our healthcare system.

It is thus an insult of unparalleled depth that you compare the funding of soldiers and marines in the middle of a shooting war to a "free lunch" - you despicable cretin.

Sen. McConnell? Rep. Boehner? I call on you to shut down the United States Congress. I call on you to make sure nothing - N-O-T-H-I-N-G - is passed until, and unless, Congress does its job and either shuts-down the war (forcing the immediate withdrawal of all in theatre in Iraq and Afghanistan) or provides the resources necessary to continue the fight.

It's time for leadership, Gentlemen.

The leadership of Congress are doing a bang-up job of shutting it down with all of the partisan polarizing digging that they are doing. It's not like there is any reason to worry that some RINOs will be turned to pass any veto proof bills. Nothing even approaching bipartisanship is going on up there.

Now there's no more oak oppression,
For they passed a noble law,
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet, axe, and saw.

Hey Chuck! How about applying that philosophy to those earmarks y'all were elected to fix?

Republicans in the Senate could actually pull this off. If they can get a Senator to put a hold on every bill the Democrats try to pass then absolutely nothing will get done in the Senate. It could be good politics to say that we won't pass anything until the troops get the funding they need, although the war is still unpopular (for now) so I'm not sure whether Republicans would want to do this.

I know the MSM liket to say that the IRAQ is unpopular. What is unpopular is the bickering over it. Most americans know its important to our safety.

"Who will stand/On either hand/And guard this bridge with me?" (Macaulay)

The Republican leadership write a resolution praising our troops for their success in turning things areound in Iraq. Let the dhimmies vote against that.
Then they introduce fromthe floor a clean bill fully funding the DoD.
Let the dhimmies vote against that.
The democrats have severely misinterpretted the meaning of the very narrow victory they won last year. It is time to demonstrate that to them and to show the American people that there are leaders who know what we want more than out:victory.

That's in binary.

Unfortunately, the rules of each House make it very hard to pull floor stunts like that.

The Senate, however, is very easily bogged down. Nearly everything that happens there is by unanimous consent. It would only take one guy (Paging Dr. Coburn) to sit on the floor all day and object to every unanimous consent request and force every procedural minutiae to be voted on. It wouldn't be long before it would get the Democrats up in fits.

In fact, stopping up the Senate like that wouldn't be a bad idea regardless. So far Dingy Harry hasn't exactly been doing anything good for America, so the less they do, the better off we all are.

Let them keep a clean bill from getting an up or down vote.
They do not have the gutz to do either.
Rub Pinky and the Brain's faces in their excremental output.

The Republican leadership has used resolutions very effectively in the past.
It is time to do so again.
Reid/Pelosi are empty suits. It is time to fold them and their Soros funded wackjobs right on up.

and then veto all of this pathetic dreck. You won't find a single Army unit at 100% readiness. They can't usually afford anything better than 93-94% on their USRs. The Senate bill is pathetic.

The "Third Worst Person in the World" and aiming higher.

I found out the reason the Viet Cong were fighting us so hard, when they should have quit after their disastrous losses in their TET offensive. However, they were motivated by the actions of our anti American leftists lead by Walter Cronkite, Jane Fonda, John Kerry and the doves of Congress. As a result more American soldiers died, plus eventually, millions of Vietnamese and others in SE Asia.

I can't imagine that things are any different in Afghanistan or Iraq today. The enemy is encouraged to fight on to victory by the actions of Sen Reid and his supporters. The death of every single member of the US military who dies at the hand of enemy soldiers, encouraged by the actions of American leftists, needs to be considered as an act of aiding and abetting the enemy.

But I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised to wake up one morning pretty soon to the news that a few of its members were rounded up and carted off. But that would be a different topic.

Talk of the rounding-up and carting-off of members of Congress generally qualifies.

You might want to tread lightly along those lines.

Just saying.

You cannot prove it is, anymore than I can prove it is not, at this point in time. But remember your posting.

The point is you came up with a theory that most people consider bizarre and which certainly posits a conspiracy and you have no evidence for it. Trying to switch the burden of proof onto other is just childish.

I really, seriously couldn't care less if you will "stand down" or not. You could stand-up, stand-down, lie-down, or piss-off - makes no difference to me regardless.

Here's what I do care about - you have made an accusation that there are plans afoot to round-up and haul-away members of the United States Congress.

OK then, let's see it. Or, to borrow a phrase - prove there is.

Now.

-------------
Diplomacy is the art of saying 'Nice doggie' until you can find a rock.

Hi. Director here. No conspiracy theories, and my ruling is that your offhand crack is one until you can prove by a preponderance of the evidence that it's not.

I make a statement. You deem it to be a conspiracy theory. A statement is a statement. Then you proceed to defend something you do not know about. I suggested you remember your post. Since I also said it could not be proven either way, you have failed to retract your accusation. Fine. Wait for it.

I'll leave it at that. You can now return to your regularly scheduled attacks on anything or anybody you disagree with.

All I ask is that you remember. You'll know why soon enough.

Up until I read your last post, I was taking your original comment as merely expressing the pious hope that the Justice Department will finally start bringing corruption charges against a non-trivial percentage of our legislative branch - something that I think that most people reading this (on both sides) would like to see on general principles. I can't really justify that take anymore.

So - and this will be your next post on the subject - you will answer the following question:

Are you claiming that there is a plan afoot for the Bush Administration to seize full control of the government in some sort of illegal coup?

Yes or no, please. No explanations, evasions, or elaborations. And, again, next post.

Moe

PS: You can also lose the attitude.

The Fuzzy Puppy of the VRWC. I've been usurped!

I was indeed tempted to ignore the "and this will be your next post on the subject" absurdity, but it would have taken too long.

I made a plain statement (which was quite benign), defended my right to make it, argued that such a statement was not a conspiracy at all, and i'm supposed to lose an attitude? When I'm ordered not to post anything until a question is answered? Perhaps that sentenced showed one, but not by intention, I am sure.

To answer your question: "Are you claiming that there is a plan afoot for the Bush Administration to seize full control of the government in some sort of illegal coup?"

Absolutely not, never implied such a thing, never would. Perhaps that is the misunderstanding going on in a thread that was started with the premise to shut down congress which would have to be accomplished by another branch of government in order to happen, and sounds a lot more conspiratorial than my simple statement. It would also be, as your question implies, a breach of separation of powers. The Administration is not now, nor has it ever been on the coup side of a coup.

It seems to me (see definition of opinion) that calling for the shutting down of congress is a very wrong thing to do.

So let's see here: what was my original statement: "Can't shut it down. But I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised to wake up one morning pretty soon to the news that a few of its members were rounded up and carted off. But that would be a different topic."

1: can't shut it down (see above)
2: personally not surprised
3: a few members of congress arrested
4: different topic

Perhaps the readers of this thread may not have been following the news in detail (which is understandable, there is far too much tripe out there to catch the small bits unless one is following a specific story line):

On 10/11/2007; According to Politico: GOP congressman predicts "another indictment or two" for corruption: In a story about a political dilemma facing Republicans -- that polls show most voters care more about balanced budgets than tax cuts -- well-known spending hawk Rep. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., says there's something coming that could convince more of his GOP colleagues to join his crusade to get the budget under control. He's been working to kill the "earmark" system "that has already been the wellspring of several recent corruption cases. 'It will probably take another indictment or two' to force change, Flake said in a Wednesday interview. 'I think those [indictments] are coming.' "

On the same day 10/11/2007: Federal investigators are hinting that a fresh wave of campaign-related theft and corruption investigations of Members of Congress are moving through the pipeline, signaling that indictments may be on the horizon.

So, unless my Representative and federal investigators can be considered a conspiracy, then it is not a conspiracy and there is proof that indications of such a thing are in the wind, or as another official has said recently, 'something is working in the pipeline'.

From "I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised to wake up one morning pretty soon to the news that a few of its members were rounded up and carted off" to 'its a conspiracy theory violation of site policy' is a very long stretch.

Proudly Supporting Patriots At http://www.countryaboveself.com

I jumped to conclusions - the same Thomas did originally, I suppose - that you were talking about the long-aetherial "George Bush is going to declare emergency rule, dissolve Congress, suspend the judiciary, and haul-away to Donald Rumsfeld's Re-Education Camps anyone who disagrees with said edict" conspiracy that is, well, a staple of the supporters of certain philosophies and Presidential candidates.

Speaking only for myself - like you, a humble site member and poster - I am very sorry for jumping to this conclusion.

Though I will fault you for failing to take this opportunity to recall our favorate soon-to-be-felon - William "in his freezer..." Jefferson (D-NoLa).

the misunderstanding going on in a thread that was started with the premise to shut down congress which would have to be accomplished by another branch of government in order to happen,

The OP proposes using the rules of Congress to bring legislative proceedings to a halt. This can be done without involving any other branch of government.

It's a theory if you can't prove it.

It's a conspiracy if it involves two or more people.

Which of these are you suggesting does not apply to your 'statement'.

Now, Thomas's claim that it is a weird conspiracy theory is obviously more of a judgement call (though, in passing, his judgement is the one that counts if you want to play on this site), but if you cannot provide any indicative evidence that your theory should even be taken seriously then, umm, well, why should we?

Guys, at the last combined meeting of the Illumenati & the Illuwomenati (used to be the Ladies Auxiliary) there was a discussion of the plan to send Members to the Don Rumsfeld Reeducation Camp for NewTone Indoctrination.

It was supposed to have been confidential - as all of our meetings are - and we've got posters who are obviously blowing cover. The Grand Poobah (aka The Prince of Dogness) is not happy.

Please take action affirmatively. I thank you & Franz thanks you. He hopes that he needs take no further action as he was looking forward to a fun weekend chasing quail and barking at intrusive children.
