I just finished a book, "Showdown: Why China wants War with the United States". Jed Babbin and Edward Timperlake, both of whom have excellent credentials, author it.
The book details the treat and possible scenarios of a war with China that would take place within the next 5 years. The conclusions and manner in which they authors outlay them is astounding and frankly frightening.
Their main argument is that the Chinese communist regime is and has been expanding and modernizing their military with primarily offensive type weapons that really would only be effective against the United State. Electronic Intelligence, Cyber-Warfare, satellite killing technology, and joint forces (Navy and Army) operations are the main areas of development in China. These are areas of military expertise that America is still the lone expert in but China is certainly working furiously to close the gap.

"VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Al Qaeda militants in Iraq vowed war on "worshippers of the cross" and protesters burned a papal effigy on Monday over Pope Benedict's comments on Islam, while Western churchmen and statesmen tried to calm passions.
Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei joined a chorus of Muslim criticism of the head of the world's 1.1 billion Roman Catholics, calling the Pope's remarks "the latest chain of the crusade against Islam started by America's (George W.) Bush."

Why is that the U.S has gone to such great pains to continue to refer to Islam as the Religion of peace. The “Top Ten List” Written by Don Feder of Human Events has an interesting and poignant position on the facts of this question. http://www.humanevents.com/lists.php?id=16561 It is my proposition that we need to fully recognize, as a people, the true threat that we face. It is not the tools of violence that are used by terrorists. Car bombs, hijackings, civilian murder and massacres are all horrible activities that terrorists use to effect change. The true threat though, are the people that believe in the system of beliefs and values that support this type of activity. Islam has not shown itself to be a religion of peace nor have the Muslims that practice Islam shown they are interested in true peace and equality.

The United States of America has been Divinely Ordained to play the key role in world history since its inception as a country. John Winthrop, governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, recognized that America would be a city on a hill, a beacon for the world.
I believe that we, Americans, were preordained to carry the torch of freedom into the world. The War on Terrorism and the promulgation of liberal democracy through out the world, and a capitalistic economic system that recognizes human nature for what it is, harnesses it, and promotes charity at the same time are the current tools that we can use to be the exemplar for the world to strive towards.

I think the main thing we, meaning the United States, has to continue to realize is that we can not rely on any other country to protect our borders, economic interests, or citizens. The duty of the President to protect us is his paramount duty. We are currently fighting a war and have continued threats from many regions of the world.
