Posted at 10:50am on Jul. 2, 2008 Forget about an attack helping McCain, can we expect one after?

By dorothyonthehill

So I've been chewing on this "an attack helps McCain" baloney and come up with two reasons why it bothers me.

1. Its untrue. To me an attack of any kind on our homeland proves that the Bush Administration did not make us any safer and thus, discounts any credibility McCain might use as ammo for why he is the safer choice.

2. I'm frustrated that we are only discussing the implications or probability of an attack prior to the election but have heard very little about the probability of an attack after November, regardless of who wins.

Posted at 9:04am on May 13, 2008 Hillary, give Eleanor some credit please

By dorothyonthehill

Mrs. Clinton has been quoted as recently stating "A woman is like a tea bag, you never know how strong she is until shes in hot water". Now either the press has omitted her giving any credit to Mrs. Roosevelt, or she omitted such credit herself. I'm getting so sick of this.....at least offer the context if you want to bolster support for your cause.

It's not like its an obscure quote, I have greeting cards with this quote and "-Eleanor Roosevelt" printed on the front for pete's sake! If anything you would think she would be wise enough to place herself amongst other leading lady's by offering credit where credit is due.

Posted at 10:00am on Apr. 22, 2008 Question for the Day: Premarital Cohabitation

By dorothyonthehill

I would like to know how this community feels about premarital cohabitation. This is to differentiate it from casual living together, or "we live together because its cheaper" or more convenient. I am speaking about living together to "test the waters" or prepare for marriage. My family is embroiled in a major debate about it and it would be helpful to get some insights as to how you as parents, marriage partners and/or living partners made your decisions.

I am anticipating a great deal of "depends on the circumstances", as that is what I have gotten from other family members and friends,...but we are all really at an impass with regards to this practice and whether or not in this world where divorce rates are so high, its worth giving it a "try" before you wed.

I'd really like to offer some personal information here but I am holding back because I don't want to taint the answers. There are various answers that I have received that sound "theoretically good" but in practice become a lot harder to execute.

Thanks for your input, I know its not really a partisan issue, but we all can recognize the various moral and political components that arise from this debate.

Posted at 10:08am on Apr. 15, 2008 One response to bitter-ness

By dorothyonthehill

"Attitude without substance is just plain bitterness." - Unknown

I've been confused and repelled by some of Obama's comments, but the fervor with which people are responding to these remarks makes me wonder about something.

I know people take politics personally, I know I do sometimes, but I also know that not everything they say is about me. I don't put my personal life out for the taking or manipulation by politicians and I rarely assume they are talking about me personally. Is it possible that there are SOME (very few lets hope) that are exactly like the people that Obama has described? Sure. Are all Americans (urban or small town) like this? Heck no.

Posted at 10:19am on Mar. 20, 2008 Where in the World is Bill Frist?

By dorothyonthehill

I've been wondering where this former majority leader has been and after a little googling, I found a few things. In addition to his duties as Princeton's Distinguished Schultz Professor of Public and International Affairs at the Wilson School he also serves on the BOD of the Millennium Challenge Corporation and is co-chairing Bono's ONE Vote '08. He also sits on the BOT for the Center for Strategic and International Studies and makes yearly trips to sub-Saharan Africa to provide surgical and physician services to the diseased.

By dorothyonthehill

With all of the accusations of the Clintons being divisive (which I wholeheartedly agree with), it's frustrating watching the GOP tear itself apart and inadvertently hand over a victory to the Dems because of infighting seemingly about core principles. Sure the Clintons only care about themselves (been sayin’ it fer years), but party celebrities accusing our candidates of potentially destroying the GOP makes me wonder who such vital personalities really care about as well.

It's like the GOP wants to lose rather than get any Republican into office in order to faithfully remain committed to the tasks we undertook with PRESIDENT Bush, or some version of them. It is also amazing that today's candidates are taking the brunt of ultimate party destruction rather than assigning blame anywhere else or (dare I say) expressing support for our current president at all. By not having anything positive to discuss or offer, voters are left to determine that the GOP either wants to lose or doesn't care if they win, both of which are equally troubling.

Posted at 11:49am on Sep. 14, 2007 I dont know where I stand on Tom Davis

By dorothyonthehill

But thought I would provide the following link to OMB Watch's contract database. This data isn't an incrimation of Davis, but more a defense for the muscle he has to answer to. Any representative from this district has a challenging task. Its a district belonging to the Pentagon, countless contracting offices, a revolving door of visiting residents (who probably vote out of state like most of my military employed neighbors) and a decent but diverse working, middle and upper class constituency. I'll I'm saying is that its a tough district, I'll leave it to ya'll to decide whether or not he is conservative "enough".

Posted at 1:41pm on Feb. 26, 2007 Fratto better than Snow?

By dorothyonthehill

Just caught the Deputy Press Secretary's press conference from Friday, and I gotta say....the tone of the press room was more where I'd like to see (and hear it), thoughtful, informative and mature. As I've said before, although I understand the tactics of Mr. Snow's candor, I have often felt very frustrated watching the characters in the room dodge about trying to out-snark eachother rather than seriously do their jobs. The place ends up sounding like Romper Rooms, with on average five laugh tracks per conference. For me, with so much on line, there is no time for joking.
