In HinzSight, McCain cool with Right's Wright ads - Rooster crows, turns bumper sticker right side up

At DeVineLaw, when we win, we leave the courtroom before the acquitted commits a crime in the jury's presence.

So with the Commander-in-Chief of Operation Navy Distress Signal aka Upside down bumper sticker dog napping with de lawd Vegas, First Rooster gamecock crowed victory for the North Carolina GOP and conservatives nationwide when John McCain backed off his previous denunciation of an ad featuring Obama's mentor and pastor of twenty years:

Citing Obama, McCain shifts on use of Wright

Pointing to Barack Obama's remark today on "Fox News Sunday" that his former pastor was "a legitimate political issue," John McCain this afternoon brought up two new controversial statements by Jeremiah Wright that have recently surfaced.

"I saw yesterday some additional comments that have been revealed by Pastor Wright, one of them comparing the United States Marine Corps with Roman legionnaires who were responsible for the death of our Savior," said McCain, responding to a question only about the North Carolina GOP ad, at a news conference in Coral Gables, Fla, He also cited comments Wright made that seemed to compare the United States and Al Qaeda.

But even while raising the Wright comments unprompted, McCain continued to say that he didn't think Obama held similar views.

When it was noted that he had previously said Wright was not fair game, McCain again alluded to Obama's statement this morning.

"But Senator Obama himself says it's a legitimate political issue, so I would imagine that many other people will share that view, and it will be in the arena," McCain said.

Pointing to past comments by McCain and his advisers that they would stay away from Wright, Obama's campaign quickly pounced.

"By sinking to a level that he specifically said he'd avoid, John McCain has broken his word to the American people and rendered hollow his promise of a respectful campaign," said spokesman Hari Sevugan. "With each passing day, John McCain acts more and more like someone who's spent twenty-six years learning the divisive, distracting tactics of Washington. That's not the change that the American people are looking for."

On Wright, McCain appears to be torn. He wants to avoid even the hint of exploiting the race issue, but he and his advisers (not to mention the North Carolina GOP) plainly recognize the political opportunity Obama's former pastor provides.

Further, McCain's camp is not deaf when it comes to the anger expressed by the likes of Rush Limbaugh and other conservatives who have grumbled about their nominee's criticism of the North Carolina GOP.

To many on the right, Wright is a gift from above, and for McCain to excoriate those who use it reminds them why they've always been wary of their new standard-bearer.

Which may explain why, in addition to the cover of Obama's political permission slip, McCain eased off his criticism today and even brought up other Wright comments.

McCains surrender was confirmed early Monday morning by the CINK of Operation Chaos, after the morning fog had lifted:

Now, a week ago, only a handful of people in North Carolina could have told you who the chairwoman of the North Carolina Republican Party is.

All of a sudden, outta nowhere, the North Carolina Republican Party happened to come alive. Do you know who's giving money now to North Carolina after that ad that runs starting today? It's been run all over the place free, but actually starts running today and tomorrow; the ad against the two Democrat candidates for governor, using Jeremiah Wright and Barack Obama. You know who all these new-found contributors to the North Carolina Republican Party are? Well, they're not Rockefeller Republicans, and they're not blue-blood country club Republicans. They are conservatives. They are people tired of being dismissed, tired of being impugned. People who want to fight but have no leader to rally around. They're hungry to go into this battle. Conservatives across this country, not just in North Carolina, are eager for the Republican Party to enter this battle and to begin to fight it. The people of North Carolina and around the country who are sending money to the North Carolina Republican Party, are the people who make this country work. They are the backbone of America.

They are willing to contribute to their party if their party will engage the political party that most in this party believe is the threat to the country as we know it today, the liberal Democrat Party. Because the Republican Party seems to eager, nationally, to attract these very voters to our party; the backbone of the Republican Party has said, "To hell with it! If that's who you want, you go get 'em. You ask them for money. We're not going to help you," but then the North Carolina Republican Party grew a set and they actually produced an ad.

And then what happened? The Republican Party standard-bearer, John McCain, dumps on the North Carolina Republican Party and says they're "out of touch with reality" and they're not obeying him in his demand that they not run the ad.

What does this result in? This results in even more money going to the North Carolina Republican Party!

It results in who knows how many people telling McCain, "You stepped in it big time on this. Senator, we love you," I'm sure his supporters are telling him. "We love you, but you don't trash your own party, especially when you're unwilling to trash the Democrats! Senator, if you would just treat the Democrats like you treat the Republicans now and then, if you'd just criticize them!"

McCain got the message, somehow. We think we know up here how he got the message, but nevertheless, he got the message. He's backed off now, and he is giving credit to Obama. (doing McCain impression) "That's right. That's right, Limbaugh! Because it was Obama, it wasn't you. You, you think -- you think -- you think that you influence me? Hee-hee-hee-hee. Silly! It was Obama. It was Obama. When he was on Fox on Sunday. Obama said, 'Yes, the race business makes race for a campaign.' Well! Since Obama has said that, then it's okay now for me. It wasn't you." I don't care who it was.

The bottom line is Senator McCain has now cleared the path for other states to go after Obama on the basis of Wright.

Now, this example, this amazing example in North Carolina is an opening. It is an opportunity that previously had not been an option.

As I said to Senator McCain last week, "Senator, we're all mavericks now. If you can sit there and dictate to your party what they can talk about and what they can't talk about, what ads they can run, what they can and can't say about Democrats; you're telling us we have to stay on the reservation while you reserve the right for yourself to go off the reservation whenever you want to (McCain-Feingold, McCain-Kennedy, McCain-Lieberman, McCain whatever else, McCain-Gang of 14), but we have to stay on the reservation? No, sir. We're all mavericks now. We're all independents now -- and that means opposing you when necessary." So, we're all mavericks.

The North Carolina Republican Party has shown the Republican Party all over the country the way.

For those naysayers that think McCain does not listen to conservatives or that conservatives can have no influence on him, the evidence against you is piling up:

(a) McCain opposed Bush's tax cuts but now vows not only to make them permanent but also is advocating an impressive list of new tax cuts across the board;

(b) McCain will now build the G-D fence; and

(c) McCain now acquiesces in State GOP's ads against Obama featuring Wright. Not only that, but it seems the NC GOP and Redstaters not afraid of the MSM PC police have fertilized the growth of a set for McCain that also produces anti-PC fear testosterone in war heroes.

Who cares that McCain uses the most recent Obama musing on Wright as his device to relent? I don't. We should not expect our proud nominee to cry uncle.

We one. The uncle we need is Uncle Sam, and it is the job of We the People to protect him, and in the process make clear that McCain works for us.

McCain is advancing well in the job training program.

Victory in this battle is declared.

Turn those bumper stickers right side up.

They can be turned again if further discipline is required.

I also think Rs need to follow Fred's lead in attacking Barack directly for his judgements rather than only attacking Wright, Farrakhan, and Ayres. Those 3 are nut jobs, but they are known quantity nut jobs. Barack is the UNKNOWN, and that is what makes it dangerous for getting elected POTUS.

It is always difficult to face up to one's mistakes. Unlike Obama, who has been bogged down with half-measures with respect to Rev. Wright, McCain wasn't afraid to do an about face in a day or so. Frankly, I thought he would dig in his heels since that is his personality.

Although I was a big Fred supporter and an even bigger McCain skeptic, I have now reached the conclusion that McCain getting the nod is actually the best thing that could have happened to the Republican party. As a party, we are far too loyal to our Presidents/Presidential Candidates. We are too reluctant to publicly criticize our own.

Bush got the ball rolling with Myers and immigration. But McCain really opens things up. Once Republicans get in the habit of holding our leaders feet to the fire, many good things can happen.

McCain is the PERFECT candidate to open this previously half-closed door . . . open it wide open.

We are all mavericks now!

I feel kind of dizzy. Where are Adam C and Absentee? I need to avoid relapse.

P.S. don't tell my Dad

McCain has my full support and I will do all I can to see him win. We must defeat the left and hold the fort at all costs.

I'm working on a post discussing McCain's new nanny state proposal. Seems Johnyboy thinks we should budget 7 Billion dollars no doubt with mandates, (both funded and unfunded) to the states taking us one step closer to a socialized medical system.

Perhaps I should instead say "Dudes. You yelled for 5 years how nothing matters except for the War on Terror. Congrats. You have been blessed with a bunch of politicians who think that nothing matter except for the War on Terror... and have given bloated budgets, enhanced Police Powers that end up fighting an entirely different War On, and this has resulted in a loss of the House and Senate."

But that post is a little punchy.

So I posted "All that matters is the War on Terror" instead.

As a tribute.

Bush isn't running.

Had he put Amnesty and the Prescription Drug Benefit and the rest of it front and center of his campaigns I would have done exactly that, (assuming David was there to give me the idea that is).

Bush supported Amnesty and passed the Prescription Drug Benefit long before the 2004 election. I won't question your sincerity, but you are being, at the very least, inconsistent.

As I said...had he made them front and center...in 2000 I'd have very well protested him!

I will note that Bush made the Prescription Drug Benefit a large part of his campaign. He won over older voters because of it (and probably FL). And his support for immigration reform was not hidden if not the biggest issue of the day.

But thanks for adding the GOP symbol. This way you can look like an anti-GOP poster, not just an anti-McCain poster.

Would be part of medicare reform, like transforming medicare into private HSA accounts or last expanding the private sector's role in medicare. Bush talked about HSAs and about the whole "ownership society" thing quite a bit. Of course, he also set 5 criteria for CFR which he then disregarded.

In my pre-maverick days, I always assumed the best about the Republican President/Presidential Candidate. Now, we are all mavericks!

You can say what you want about Bush, but his starting positions were more conservative than McCain's in many respects. Its just that his "new tone" made him TERRIBLE at dealing with Congress. My hope is that with McCain, Congress will backstab him once, and he will be out for blood.

That is my hope.

on the campaign trail it was all about magnet schools and vouchers and choice. That all went away pretty quickly.

"Nothing works like freedom, Nothing succeeds like liberty"
Kyle

on top of that, he didn't emphasize it. I took it as a wink wink...nudge nudge thing...something he'd talk about and never do.

I've learned my lesson there. Maybe it's unfair to McCain because I learned my lesson from Bush and I won't cut McCain any slack but it is what it is.

The saying goes, fool me once shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me! Bush got me twice....Call me cynical but I'm not down for a third play at sucker!

Among the many gifts that have flowed from the Rev. Wright saga, none may be greater than Sen. McCain's acknowledgement that yes, Virginia, the MSM meme can be wrong.

I think more of you now, senator.

I have my bumper stickers on order: just in case they are needed at a later date. (Keep in mind -- they can STILL be of use even AFTER McCain becomes POTUS -- keep them handy!)

But, in the interest of comity, THIS will be my last post using the graphic. (I will keep the graphic in reserve -- in case it is needed at a later date.)

Clearly, Sen McCain GOT THE MESSAGE. Since that was the entire point, getting his attention, I hereby declare VICTORY for Conservatism, and cease hostilities.

OK...since the commander of the protestthinks we should stand down...I need to re think this...

On the one hand it's bad form to win a battle and refuse to be gracious in victory, but on the other hand the next battle has already begun on another issue, (McCains announced intention to pour $7 Billion dollars into a socialised health care plan). I've recreated an Icon to include the entire Republican Party in the protest and think it's as important to tell the Party it's got a problem as well given it's refusal to deal with corrupt politicians in Alaska and elswher, it's continued defiance of the Party on issues ranging from Taxes, Spending Earmarks and other pressing problems that lost them the Majority. I'll post it with this, and look forward to GC, and David's input to see if I should continue.

I'd feel a lot better about it if he'd issue just one statement that indicates he really understands why he has been and is still wrong on the illegal immigration question. Simply saying that he'll build the g.d. fence isn't enough. In fact, it indicates a complete lack of understanding. If he'd adopt the Fred Thompson immigration plan and tell us why, he'd go a long way towards winning my less-qualified support.

John McCain didn't make Pastor Wright say "God Damn America". And John McCain didn't make Obama go to that church and get unpatriotic spiritual advice for 20 years. How can any reasonable person not question the patriotism of someone who says "God Damn America"?

...what McCain says. When he responded to a question on the blogger call Friday he was then accused of attacking Senator Obama. When he mentions it in reference to Senator Obama saying it is a legitimate political issue, he is accused of attacking Obama.

I am sure if Senator McCain says nothing he will be accused of sweeping the problems of race relations under the rug.

Instead, it's all about itself -- wild-eyed true believers with earplugs in, blinders on, and knowledge only of a direction in which they want to forge ahead, results, effectiveness, consequences, and pragmatism be damned.

Thus when I wrote my pieces on RS 3, I call for a new, Republican style of activism :-)

In part, because, as Adam said, the key for now is to win, but in part because of the strides McCain has been taking in ging after Dems instead of Conservatives.

I don't mind internal McCain squabbles, but I am concerned about turning off undecideds. I don't want to be the reason anyone doesn't vote for McCain.

Besides, I'll have four years to eviscerate him in pen. ;-)
