How McCain can unite the base without really trying

OK, so my title is a bit over the top, but step one of the process might be underway through no effort of McCain or his campaign.

Over on DailyKos, they're swooning over a new web video that mocks McCain's statements on the War in Iraq in a sort of catchy artsy fashion.

Watching the video I can't help but think:

This is the alternative. Being governed by people who think it is so self evident that withdrawal from Iraq won't lead to chaos, that to say so is worthy of derision. People who think saying there's gonna be other wars is some sort of radical statement. Et cetera. Seriously, watch the thing.

So yes, McCain has steps he needs to take to get a united base behind him, but if the left starts going after him like this, they might make his job a little easier.

why it's so hard for our liberal *friends* to get this simple idea - we're going to be in Iraq for 100+ years, probably more. And why is that so bad? We've had our troops in Germany (and around Japan) for more than 60+ years and in South Korea for more than 50. And that's been nothing but a good thing. Having troops someplace doesn't mean that we're going to have fighting for 100 years - it seems to be quite a disconnect for them to comprehend.

It was a dumb comment to make politically. The Democrats will be able to parrot it over and over and 70% of people out there will come away with a negative impression, an impression that "McCain wants to stay in Iraq forever." Given their negative opinion of Iraq that's horrible when you're trying to win the election.

We can make the argument that the surge as working and we shouldn't surrender. We can't make the argument that we should necessarily be there for 100 years.

Obama wants to talk to our enemies. Not very original

Neville Chamberlain talked to Adolf Hitler...

Cordele Hull talked to the Japanese...
