Posted at 2:06am on Jan. 16, 2008 Would McCain/Huckabee cause a third party candidate ?
By Jack Ryan
If John McCain or Mike Huckabee becomes the republican nominee, there could very well be a conservative third party candidate. The position both these candidates have taken on immigration could very well be the deal breaker among conservatives. In case you missed it, John McCain supported a deal with Ted Kennedy to ram amnesty down our throats last year. And Mike Huckabee also supported, and continues to support, various forms of amnesty.

Posted at 5:46am on Jan. 10, 2008 Rick Santorum blasts McCain !
By Jack Ryan
Former senator Rick Santorum was interviewed by Hugh Hewitt yesterday. Santorum's thoughts on a potential John McCain nomination were less than encouraging. Basically, Santorum said that McCain is not a conservative and cannot be trusted to carry out a conservative agenda.
Some of the issues Santorum brought up were,
1) Immigration - McCain supported the Bush amnesty plan, and went as far to work with Ted Kennedy to get a deal cut.

Posted at 2:46am on Jan. 8, 2008 John McCain is unacceptable as the nominee...
By Jack Ryan
Fool me once, shame on you..
Fool me twice, shame on me...
Sorry, I'm not buying John McCain's new love for border security. Afterall, it was John McCain who supported the Bush amnesty plan. And it was John McCain who called conservatives "nativists" for their support for building a border fence.
Does anyone remember the Gang of 14 ?
Or how about McCain's willingness to let Bush's tax cuts expire ?

Posted at 2:00am on Dec. 22, 2007 CBS news: Ron Paul tied for third in Iowa...
By Jack Ryan
As a Fred Thompson supporter, I'm envious of the Ron Paul campaign. It seems like all the momentum is going to congressman Paul. Now CBS news reports that in the latest poll, Ron Paul is tied for third in Iowa and is surging in New Hampshire. This news comes after Ron Paul's campaign broke one day fundraising records last week.
Its time the establishment wing of the party wakes up...Ron Paul is a serious player whether we like it or not.

Posted at 2:21am on Oct. 10, 2007 Should attorneys decide when the US goes to war ?....or should President Romney?
By Jack Ryan
In my opinion, the following exchange between Mitt Romney and Chris Matthews was the big story of the debate today.
Chris Matthews -> "If you were president of the United States, would you need to go to Congress to get authorization to take military action against Iran's nuclear facilities?"
Mitt Romney -> "You sit down with your attorneys and tell you what you have to do, but obviously the president of the United States has to do what's in the best interest of the United States..."

Posted at 3:25am on Oct. 4, 2007 Thompson raises over 8 million in just 3 weeks !
By Jack Ryan
The fundraising news is not bad for the Thompson campaign. Having announced in early September, the Thompson campaign has already raised over 8 million in just over three weeks. Had Thompson announced at the beginning of the third quarter, his total would have been much much higher.
The funniest fundraising news is that Ron Paul raised 5 times more(5 million) than Mike Huckabee(1 million).

Posted at 7:20pm on Sep. 21, 2007 The president must VETO the democrats version of "Expanding Homeownership Act of 2007"
By Jack Ryan
Earlier this week, Barney Frank was able to get congressional democrats and many republicans to go along with him by passing the "Expanding Homeownership Act of 2007" bill. It's now moving over to the senate, where Senator Dodd has stated he supports it as well. Unless 41 republicans in the senate have the brains and nerve to stop this huge government takeover of the mortgage industry, then President Bush MUST veto the bill when it arrives on his desk.

Posted at 1:09am on Sep. 5, 2007 Fred Thompson will announce Wednesday on Jay Leno
By Jack Ryan
Well, its official now. Actor/politician/husband/father Fred Thompson will announce his candidacy Wednesday night on the Jay Leno show. Thompson will also run an ad during the republican debate earlier in the evening.
This is absolutely a shrewd move by the Thompson campaign. While the republican debate will attract an audience between 1-2 million viewers, Thompson on the Leno show will attract over 5 million viewers.

Posted at 8:04pm on Sep. 4, 2007 Democrats legislation to "regulate" mortgage lending will cause a recession
By Jack Ryan
I'll be the first to admit that during the last five years mortgage lending practices have become too lax. And as a result, those lending practices are partly to blame for the current turmoil in the mortgage industry.
But, to make matters worse, the democrats will attempt to pass legislation this fall to sharply regulate the mortgage industry. Its one thing for the government to step in and control potential fraud in the industry - its another matter entirely for the government to step in and mandate the lending rules lenders would be forced to follow. But thats exactly what the democrats want to do.

Posted at 7:57pm on Aug. 31, 2007 Dubai buys share of Las Vegas casinos......
By Jack Ryan
Thats right, the same Dubai that was rejected for the US ports deal due to national security concerns has now invested over 5 billion dollars in MGM/Mirage's newest project "City Center" being built in Las Vegas.
Apparently, MGM/Mirage isn't too concerned that two of the 9/11 hijackers were based in Dubai, and that Dubai doesn't officially recognize the state of Israel, and that as recently as 2001, Dubai supported the Taliban.

Posted at 7:31pm on Aug. 31, 2007 McCain and Romney overreacted regarding Senator Craig...
By Jack Ryan
Before I begin, let me state that I don't find what Larry Craig did at the Minneapolis airport to be very wise, especially given the fact that he is a senator in the public eye. Nor do I think Craig handled himself well when being interrogated by the Minneapolis police. But after listening to the police tape, the reality is, Craig admitted guilt to a crime that did not take place. And had Craig fought the charges, he most certainly would have prevailed.

Posted at 11:17pm on Aug. 13, 2007 The race between Giuliani, Thompson, and Romney begins on Labor Day......
By Jack Ryan
After a year of candidate fundraising and giving speeches that few people heard, the race for the republican nomination begins in earnest the first week of September.
Forget about all the early national media polls, forget about the paid for events like the Iowa straw poll, and last but not least, forget about all the previous debates. This race begins for real on Labor day.
The first tier candidates are, in no order, Fred Thompson, Rudy Giuliani, and Mitt Romney. The second tier candidates are John McCain and Mike Huckabee. The rest of the field is nothing more than filler.

Posted at 7:01pm on Jul. 13, 2007 OK, my first criticism of the Thompson campaign.......
By Jack Ryan
As many of you know, I have been a strong supporter of a potential Fred Thompson campaign for president. For numerous reasons, I feel that he has the qualities and personality that is needed in a potential president. And I will continue to support Thompson until he proves otherwise. But one issue is of concern to me...
If Fred is to run a credible "populist" campaign, why has he brought Mary Matalin into the campaign ?

By Jack Ryan
Fred Thompson continues to lead the republican pack in the latest Rasmussen poll released yesterday. The poll shows Thompson maintaining his lead over Giuliani in spite of the numerous negative press reports targeted at Thompson during this past week.

Posted at 12:59am on Jun. 8, 2007 Don't be fooled, the immigration bill will be resurrected......
By Jack Ryan
Lets not get overly excited tonight. While anti-amnesty people were successful in temporarily stopping debate on this bill, the pro-amnesty crowd in the senate and White House will not give up on it.
The worry is that the republicans in the media will relent the next time the bill comes up in an altered form. While it was nice that the some republican pro-amnesty supporters of the Bush plan such as Hugh Hewitt were on our side during this battle, remember, it was Hewitt and others who labeled us as "nativists" just after the 2006 elections - claiming those of us who supported border security caused the republicans to lose in November.
