A come to McCain moment.

I as most who had not had McCain anywhere on their list except above Ron Paul would not have believed that I could have a come to McCain moment but I have.
I was checking out the Drudge report and saw the link for McCain releasing his taxes and thought I would see what I see for every other candidate...MONEY...what I saw that brought me to the coming to McCain moment is this....
"Senator McCain donates his royalties from his books to charitable organizations. This sum has totaled over $1,800,000 since 1998 when he signed his first book deal. Senator McCain's book income of $256,898 for 2006 and 2007 is comprised of earnings for Faith of My Fathers, Worth the Fighting For, Why Courage Matters, Character is Destiny, and Hard Call."
"Beginning in 1991, Senator McCain has also donated the increase in his Senate salary for that year and each subsequent year to charity because he opposed the Congressional pay increase at that time and pledged not to accept the pay raises. The cumulative total of these donations is over $450,000."

What I see in those two paragraphs is a man who believes what he says and does not feel the need to flip to please me or anyone else. I know those who dislike McCain will say it is just that attitude that makes them leery of him....I say it is just that attitude that makes him a great man.
President Bush could really get my barn burning with that same character trait but I respect him for it and I respect Senator McCain for it as well. He is a man true to his word and convictions and that is more than I can say for a great many other politicians who have and are running for the Presidency of the United States of America.

the American people were that stupid, don't you?
Just keep babbling nonsense about flag pins, a hundred more years of a useless war, wacky pastors, and 70's rads t3h Clintons were actually closer to than the ones they point the finger at. We'll be fine.
Your truculent old man, the reverse ace (lost five aircraft) who made propaganda broadcasts for his Communist captors, will certainly lock down the Matlock vote. But that'll be it.
My question about John mcCain:
Boxers or briefs?
Answer:
Depends.
...which is an ironic title, on reflection. Happily, the guy was already on notice for needing to apologize for trying to bring the quality of the site down anyway.

because I think it's a great thing that McCain does (certainly a lot better than others in his situation), but it's a lot easier when your wife is worth more than $100MM.

wife is rich...and a great many other politicians whose wives and or in the case of Hillary husbands are rich are not doing anything quite like this either...Hillary and Bill gave to their own charitable organization...I don't think you can reduce what he is doing to nothing...he is standing for something.

However on balance, I sure like OUR kept man (McCain) better than THEIR kept man (Kerry). I haven't checked, but if I was guessing I'd say Kerry's tax returns would tell quite a different story than Johnny Mac's.

That being said, what more do we want out of him. They spend a chunk of the family funds on their foundation. And they could keep stockpiling. Note also that Sen. McCain has a prenuptial; thus he can't access much of her money.
The details are still great. He still donates the Congressional pay raise he opposed. That's principle even if the amount is small.
And he donates most of his salaries to charity. What more can we ask for from the "rich?"

than some kind of empty gesture, since his wife has a lot of money.
And there are very few congress members who are not independantly wealthy or have spouses with much wealth, and you don't see this same principle demonstrated by them.
I don't think this story is really about McCain seeking to impoversh himself, but more that he chooses to donate and give away a lot of wealth he had some legal and rightful claim to.
I think what he does with his book deals is also a good example of generosity. How much did the Clinton's or the Obama's give away from their book deals?
Even when you think nobody is looking. And until now, who would he have expected to look for something like this?

just gets easier and easier for conservatives.

But why is even an issue how much money the family has? Just seems to me that it shouldn't even be brought up.
That's all I meant by it.

He and his wife signed a pre-nup, so he's still placing himself at some risk. He should be feathering his nest just in case a wine baron steals the beer baroness, but he doesn't. He's got serious character.
"Beginning in 1991, Senator McCain has also donated the increase in his Senate salary for that year and each subsequent year to charity because he opposed the Congressional pay increase at that time and pledged not to accept the pay raises. The cumulative total of these donations is over $450,000."
This made me proud to support him. This is walking the walk. This is a sign of humility, grace, and a general understanding that he is the servant, not the master. Bravo Mr. President*, Bravo!!!

I made the comment that Obama bothered me because he didn't seem to have much humility, and got reamed by an avid Obama supporter. I still think he lacks humility, even more so now than I did when I made the comment several months ago.
But the more I have seen of McCain, I am convinced that he does indeed have some humility and some principle.
Contemplate the prospect of the President of the United States taking a photo op with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. National disgrace.
Back on topic, I agree with everyone, it's a gracious thing to do.
This is a man who puts his country first - before the party and even himself. I know that gives a lot of conservatives heartburn, and McCain wasn't my first choice either, but I am perfectly fine with him as our candidate. He is the epitome of patriotism with a big dose of principles. That means alot to this red-blooded American. And, I expect it will mean alot to democrats who see through the Obama empty suit.
Fred Thompson was my candidate. I am still wearing my Fred Thompson sweatshirt each morning when I walk the dog or run pre-work errands.
While I worked for McCain in 2000, I was and still am serious about no amnesty for illegals and did not support him. I vowed that while the GOP would probably get my vote, I wasn't sure about sending my money or spending my time working on the GOTV efforts. However, as the left keeps poking at McCain all they accomplish is pushing me to my checkbook and to signing up for the legal team again this year.
Each time they put our a hit piece on McCain it reminds me of his qualities that I admire. Keep poking, I haven't seen a GOP 48 state landslide win since Reagan.

policy differences with McCain. I also really dislike his willingness to give the Dems the time of day, much less work with them on important legislation. But even when Fred was my guy, I liked the integrity of McCain and this is a great example of it.
I think McCain is dead wrong about Russia but Obama is wrong about how to engage every country, as far as I can tell from his statements.

the MSM and ultra-leftists are totally in the tank for the Obamanable Showman. Au contraire to Obama's scorn for "bitter" Dems who may have lost their jobs---Hillary is scornful of rich elitists who comprise MoveOn's leadership. Yet the ultra-left now is promoting the complete distortion that Hillary scorns the little guy. Her reputed remark thirteen years ago at Camp David in a closed session is supposed to "mirror" or "negate" Obamaman's remarks to an elite group of rich fundraisers in SF a few weeks ago.
To ask its audience to believe this, as Kos & Politico are doing, is either stupid or completely dishonest.
Indeed, a "poll" by Newsweak, another MSM major in the tank for Obama, contradicts the much more recent and honest poll by Gallup which shows Hillary closing nationally on Obama.
Rush's "Operation Chaos" or the old Dem circular firing squad is at work.
Here is my heretical point. McCain should look again at that Quinnipiac poll a while agao that has him & Condi destroying Obama/Clinton or Clinton/Obama in NY, NJ, and New England.
John-boy is old and stubborn, but he should consider pulling that rabbit out of his hat. Consider. Look at.
I just want to keep the White House out of cylon hands.
I don't know why, but this really struck home with me. I have serious differences with McCain on certain policy issues, but I remind myself that policy issues aren't the last word when it comes to electing a President.
After all, we can never know for sure just what anybody might do as President, but our best predictive insight is to be found in the character of the candidate. All of McCain's character issues point to him being the right man for the job (out of the three left, anyway).
As far as I know, he hasn't told any whoppers, he hasn't sat in a racist church for 20 years, and he hasn't willingly associated with terrorists, and neither have his family or senior members of his party. If we use it the right way, all this should be a tremendous advantage for him in the general election.
And if these "characteristics" are indicative of the man, he should be a fine President.
Now, we need to elect enough conservatives to Congress to get him on the right track with illegal immigration, tax rate dynamics, and the fine points of the debate on national security interrogations.
"An unarmed man can only flee from evil, and evil is not overcome by fleeing from it.“--Jeff Cooper. From Bill Coffey's collection of military quotations
I never really thought about this before....
The McCains having a pre-nup (or not) is a non-issue for me. He doesn't need her money, and likely isn't too worried about it.
You know how you can tell? He (together with his wife) raised two sons who have chosen the military. Those young men stand to be extremely wealthy some day, and yet they have given of themselves to this country. When you have raised two kids who choose service instead of the easy way, you probably aren't overly focused on money yourself.
a great example you have given....his two children with his rich wife have decided to go into the military...there is no better example...thanks.

John McCain is the only candidate OF THE PEOPLE. He talks the talk and walks the walk. This older, wiser brother can go toe to toe with either Billary or B. Hussein Obama, fighting their lies with straight talk. John McCain 08!

President McCain!
