Ralph Peters: back the Shia in civil war

Ralph Peters backs civil war in Iraq – on the Shia side. Seeing civil war as unavoidable (and trying to stop it as a waste of our troops), Peters backs the Shia Arabs against the ex-Baathist jihadi-supporting Sunnis and their Saudi backers -- who are Bush/Baker family friends as he is fond of noting in the past. He believes Arab Shias can be separated from their Persian counterparts.
I mentioned on this website that civil war is common after the removal of a dictator or colonial regime. Yugoslavia (after communism) and India (after colonialism) are cases in point. Perhaps this was inevitable in Iraq. I’d add that the Islamic revival that is sweeping the Islamic world fuels these old sectarian hatreds.
The problem, which Peters notes in passing, is that either side will be savage and American critics will blast our policy … but then again they will blast it anyway. We had to back Stalin to defeat Hitler; are we in such a position again? Or should we try once more for a pan-Iraqi solution?

And from what I have been reading, many sunnis have fled the country and many baathist sunni insurgents have been killed and lose every battle with the Shia, and US and Iraqi forces. So in some ways, except for Mookie (whose days appear to be numbered) we already have taken sides it seems to me... on the right side!
