More on God's Chosen Candidate

For the last month or two I have made it a point not to spend time knocking other candidates. I think it has something to do with the fact that I realized that every candidate on the ticket right now is a pretty good candidate. I would say Huckabee is one of those as well. He's got some faults, which are a problem, but I think it would be fun to watch him debate Hillary or whomever the Dems pick. But there is one problem I shall write about as long as it remains an under handed attack on the candidate I support, and that's Huckabee's near insistence that he is chosen by God to win. And don't tell me it's not there or it's some general hope that God will bless him because the facts just don't support that interpretation.

Today more came out on Huckbee's speech at Liberty University:

When Liberty University Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. introduced Republican presidential candidate Gov. Mike Huckabee at Wednesday’s convocation, he said Huckabee told university leaders during a visit here last year that “if this candidacy really took off it would have to be a God thing.”

It seems God has done His thing.

...And, while the research continues to show Huckabee climbing in the polls, he said the “God thing” will continue to amaze those on the outside.

In a brief question-and-answer period after his talk, one student asked Huckabee what he can attribute the surge in success to. Huckabee replied: “There’s only one explanation for it and it’s not a human one. It’s the same power that felt that … two fish and five loaves could feed a crowd of 5,000 people. … There literally are thousands of people across this country who are praying that little would become much and it has.”

OK, lets review this. If Huckabee wins, it would be directly attributed to God's help, and I am assuming that God's help follows His will. The assumption with the title of this peice ("More on God's Chosen Candidate") I am assuming that if it's God's will that you win, and God helps you, it reasons that God has chosen you above the others.Hence you are "chosen."

This is a major problem. A serious one. Huckabee's assertion that somehow God has chosen him to take a small yet significant lead in Iowa is a real slap in the face to those who actually believe different than him. Contrary to his own belief system, most people don't believe God's political hand rests on the shoulders of Populist Baptist Candidates. The implications that God is performing miracles stinks of a political hubris that drives many away from the GOP. Frankly when Huckabee's current hurdle is to overcome Mitt Romney, his assertions of God's will in his campaign is a direct assault on not only Mitt Romney but also on the faith I believe whole heartedly to be true. How can I ever take a candidate seriously who is implying to me that his campaign is a surrogate battle between he Baptists and the Mormons? And if God is helping and has chosen Huckabee, does that mean by supporting another candidate I am fighting against God? And what if Huckabee loses to Romney, does that mean God changed his mind and now supports Mormon candidates over Baptist ones? Or does it mean that whoever outperforms Huckabee is actually stronger then God?

Look the accusation has been made on this site and countless others that Mitt Romney will attempt to make Mormonism the state religion. Nothing could be further from the truth. If that was the case, I would never support him, because Mormon doctrine itself teaches against that and I would be morally opposed to it. Yet if Romney was to say anything near to what Huckabee is claiming, he would be done in the blink of an eye. The MSM is so far refusing to take this story up, they are happy to see Huckabee rise, his candidacy has literally become a tool of the left.

When I was a kid in Sunday School a teacher told me that in their opinion it was wrong to pray for a win against a worthy opponent such as in a Football game or such- her reasoning she gave is the same I give here. To claim God's help in defeating another worthy opponent is not only a sole claim to knowing the mind of God, and in many ways to his love and support, but it's a deep religious hubris that has absolutely no place in the teaching of Jesus Christ.

Huckabee is a disaster waiting to happen. I'd vote for him against Hillary or Deadwards, but I'm indifferent between him and Oprahbama and would genuinely prefer Bill Richardson.

I don't know what's worse. Huckabee getting the nomination and giving Nancy Pelosi a Tip O'Niell-sized Democratic Majority to legislate with, or Huckabee winning and imposing Christian Neo-Socialism.

"If this ain't a mess, it'll do until one shows up." -Sheriff Bell, No Country For Old Men

Can you image the commercial that the democrats will run on this one.

Gov. Huckabee is not saying that God has ordained him to be the next POTUS. He is saying that where he is now can only be attributed to the power of God. He is saying that if he does become the next POTUS it is only by the power of God. In fact, any candidate who becomes the next POTUS can attribute it to the power of God. If Hillary is the next POTUS, it only because God put her there. Romans 13:1 states, "Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God."

I belive that Gov. Huckabee's rise in the polls is because of God. Whether God has purposely moved in the hearts of people or because God gifted Gov. Huckabee with great communication skills, either way, it is God who is responsible. The world is shocked right now over Gov. Huckabee's rise in the polls. I personally have no problems with him giving glory where glory is due.

Stop trying to nit-pick over nothing to try and tear down this man so that you can boost your own guy. I have no problem with people attacking Gov. Huckabee over legitmit reasons, like his immigration stance on children, but this is weak.

I agree with Romans 13:1. Sometimes God gives us great leaders. Sometimes God gives us what we want even though it's not good for us.

I wonder which one Huck would be...

that is your choice. But, trying to say that Gov. Huckabee believes that he has been with out a doubt choosen by God to be the next POTUS is ridiculous. If he wants to give glory to God for the position He is in, I think that is great. I do believe if God does not ordain him to win, he should still praise Him.

God is in charge. He ordains leaders into power. He does miraculous stuff everyday, like paying my bills. If Gov. Huckabee wants to give credit where credit is do, then I commend him for it.

I'd have no problem if Huck said "With God's help, I'm being the best I can be."

I have a REAL problem when Huck insinuates he's "God's Chosen Candidate".

Well said.

Huckabee has publicly said on numerous occasions that God doesn't pick candidates.

It's funny how everyone in here bashing Huckabee sound no different than the Democrat Bush Bashers. It's actually hilarious to consider the desperate nature of your attacks and how they get more insane as he inches past your candidate of choice, in this case Romney.

I'm not a Huckabee supporter, but attacks such as this make me think I could be. Because the truth is, these attacks aren't necessary if your candidate is so strong. So instead of bashing one of our candidates, you may want to consider writing articles that highlight why someone should support yours!

It's interesting you think this about those opposed to Huckabee. I'm not opposed to Huckabee per se, I'm opposed to exact same thing you accuse anti-Huckabee people of doing but FOR their candidate. Not a post goes by about Huckabee that doesn't turn into a Romney did this, Rudy is this, Fred won't do this...

It's all a serial joke. If Huckabee is so strong, why does his supporters here have to fly off the handle EVERY TIME?

I know you don't have the answers, but it does need to be addressed.

since Huckabee decided to go down this road. The implication is that there has been Divine Intervention not only to propel Huckabee ahead in Iowa but because of Romney's faith. Such an attack on a person's religion would lead to an outright ban here on RedState, but apparently has become acceptable in other Republican circles.

Given "President" Robertson, etc., we might should give God a break and admit he has better things to do than intervene in Iowa's caucuses.

Huckabee's claims are arrogant and presumptuous. I still don't see how people consider them to be "humble." Now that Huckabee has brought God into this finite human arena of politics, I wonder if he's ready to be truly humbled by what God may do when people claim that they are His chosen candidate.

I wouldn't presume to say that God will "smite" Huckabee, but I wouldn't rule it out either.

"The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter."
-Winston Churchill

Although, the guy that said get over it basically had it right. Your presumption that Huckabee is starting a "My God's better than your God" contest is ridiculous at its base. For instance you state

...most people don't believe God's political hand rests on the shoulders of Populist Baptist Candidates.

which to me implies that you can site statistics showing this fact. I'd like to see them. Who do you define as most people? I believe that most people want the best candidate for the job, and right now, it's the guy that believes in God, and not Joseph Smith.

Months and months and months ago, I put a ban on discussing LDS theology in place, and golly, I've been slack about it, but your next shot across the bow like this one, is the end of your posting time here.

I say this as a Catholic, I say this as a Republican, I say this as a conservative, but most importantly, I say this as a site administrator.

This ends now.

I was going to write a brief diary asking that the Mormon theology discussions go away, but I didn't realize you had ruled on the topic earlier. There's no more place for that here than Christian or Judaism or Scientology or [name your favorite religion]. I suspect Islam is kind of a gray area, considering the impact it has on geopolitics these days...

I find this line of criticism not only disgusting, but completely unnecessary. We don't need your subtle religious alarmism to beat Huckabee. We don't need to play to anti-religious paranoia for Huckabee to lose the nomination.

This manufactured controversy is all the more disappointing for the play it gets here at Redstate. Looking at the list of luminaries recommending this nonsense is downright depressing.

Huckabee would never say it so obviously, but this whole idea that somehow he is God's anointed candidate concerns me, deeply. I am a Christian, and proud of it, but I am not electing a President to be my spiritual guide. I want a leader. According to the tone that Huckabee is setting it would appear that if I oppose his candidacy, which I do for several reasons, than I am opposing the will of God. Last I checked God hadn't registered for the Party or officially endorsed a candidate.

Of course values and faith are important, we all want them, even demand them in our candidate, but its just part of the picture. Jimmy Carter was a very good Christian, but that did not equal a capable President.

If today's conservatives were voting in the 1980 election I am afraid they would go for the Sunday school teacher over divorced former pro-choicer. scary thought

God gave all of us freedom of choice. It is a riot reading the religious stuff people are heaping on Him in choosing Huckabee for our next president. I find it very funny. When did everyone lose sight of the fact that we have some very hard problems that are going to need attention and we are going to need a very strong leader to come through this mess we have gotten ourselves into. Do you think we'd have come this far if God hadn't been watching over all of us? We better start to pay attention to the issues since we are going to have to choose our next president. If you stop and think about it we have Satan running on the Democratic ticket and we have the annointed one on the Republican ticket. Do you actually believe that God is going to let this happen to us? We had better start paying attention to the individuals running and their character rather than the party they are running on. It might be wise if we took note of who is backing who financially because the person that does get elected will owe the person that backed them financially which means they are "owned" so we had better be very careful. Stop the petty arguing and get down to the facts. I, for one, am asking God to guide each of us voters so we get a leader who can really help the American people and stop taking advantage of them. Americans are good, hard working people who have a great sense of humor or we would have had another revolution long ago to clean out the mess that is supposed to be working for us in DC. Instead, they've been picking our pockets and destroying our culture, schools, way of life, religion and anything else they think we cherish. So let's get to work and pray God gives us the wisdom to make the RIGHT choice!

I just can't make up my mind which.....

Our movement IS in disarray. I'd never thought I'd see the day when conservatives stab conservatives in the back for essentially saying "God's grace is with us."

The mis characterization of Huck's speech is ridiculous and unfair IMO. I thank God every day for the wonderful things that have happened in my life, and now you unfairly attack Huck for doing the same.

Shame. Shame.

What you have is a non-conservative saying God's blessed his campaign over others. You see, in order for God to bless Huck's campaign with success it means others have to fail.

There is nothing in Huck's platform, nor his record to make me think God has endorsed him.

Stop shilling for Romney. He has simply given God glory for putting him in the position that he is in. This is such a hit-job and so unworthy of a diary, let alone being recommended.

Would it be wrong for me to say that God gave me the job that I have today? Wouldn't that mean that He didn't give it to other people? I praise the Lord that He has given me the job that I have. God endorsed me for this position.

If Gov. Huckabee ever comes out and says, God has endorsed me to be the next POTUS, then write this stuff. Otherwise, drop it and tell us why we should vote for your man Mitt instead.

Would it be wrong for me to say that God gave me the job that I have today? Wouldn't that mean that He didn't give it to other people? I praise the Lord that He has given me the job that I have. God endorsed me for this position.

...god endorsed Huckabee? Fine, thats the problem. It's pridefull and without merit. Did God use to endorse Romney or Giuliani and now changed his mind?
