Romney on Iran

Romney has some key points on Iran. At the end of the vdeo you will notice a ringing endorsement of his words. Here is some more on his Iran plan for Romney's Press Shop:

Governor Romney's Five Step Plan of Action to Prevent a Nuclear Iran:

"First, we must continue tighten economic sanctions. Our model should be at least as severe to the sanctions imposed on Apartheid South Africa. We should demand no less from the international community today….

"We must also be imaginative in the way we pressure Iran economically - an issue I have been looking into. In my meetings this week in Israel, I have become aware of the potential of U.S. pension funds to further isolate the Iranian economy. We should explore a selective disinvestment policy. After a series of briefings here, I have contacted the Treasurer of my own state of Massachusetts and Governors of other states to begin this process by meeting today with senior Israeli leaders in Boston.

"Second, we must impose diplomatic isolation of Iran's Government. Ahmadinejad should not be provided the trappings, respect, and recognition of a responsible head of state as he travels. In fact, when former Iranian President Khatami traveled to Boston last year to lecture at Harvard University, I denied him state police security for his visit. The real question is: why was he invited in the first place? Ahmadinejad is even more strident than Khatami. He should neither be invited to foreign capitals nor feted by foreign leaders. This would have important symbolic significance, not just to Ahmadinejad, but to the people of Iran.

"Diplomatic isolation should also include an indictment of Ahmadinejad for incitement to genocide under the Genocide Convention. The United States should lead this effort.

"The full title of the Genocide Convention is the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. Remember that word: Prevention.

"Article III of that treaty establishes that 'public incitement to commit genocide' is a punishable crime. Every signatory to this treaty, including the U.S. and most European countries, shares an obligation to enforce it. So do human rights groups that care about international humanitarian law.

"Nobel Prize Winner Elie Wiesel, and human rights advocate and former Canadian Justice Minister Irwin Cotler have spoken out on this issue.

"In addition, former U.S. Ambassador John Bolton has been a forceful advocate for this effort, and is joined by Alan Dershowitz. If these two can agree, they must be on to something.

"Third, Arab states must join this effort to prevent a nuclear Iran. These states can do much more than wring their hands and urge America to act. They should support Iraq's nascent government, They can help America focus on Iran by quickly turning down the temperature of the Arab-Israeli conflict - stopping the financial and weapons flows to Hamas and Hizbullah…thawing relations with Israel…and telling the Palestinians they must drop terrorism and recognize Israel's right to exist.

"Fourth, we must make it clear that while nuclearization may be a source of pride, it can also be a source of peril. The military option remains on the table. And further, nuclear material that falls into the hands of terrorists would surely provoke a devastating response from the civilized world.

"Fifth, our strategy should be integrated into a broader approach to the broader Muslim world. I agree with our friend, former Prime Minister Aznar of Spain, that a central purpose of NATO should be to defeat radical Islam. I believe this has two critical dimensions. The first is an unquestionably capable military. This will mean a greater investment by the United States as well as other nations. The second is a global partnership which includes NATO and other allies. Its mission would be to support progressive Muslim communities and leaders in every nation where radical Islam is battling modernity and moderation. This Partnership for Prosperity should help provide the tools and funding necessary for moderates to win the debate in their own societies. They need secular public schools, micro credit and banking, the rule of law, adequate healthcare, human rights, and competitive economic policies. In the final analysis, only Muslims will be able to permanently defeat radical Islam. And we can help."

Romney's plan is a hollistic one, showing the need to provide a comprehensive plan that attacks all the weaknesses in Iran that have lead the world to the current situation we are in today.

I think the knock on Romney's "foreign policy" experience is going to melt away quickly. This is an example on how he "gets" US foreign policy.

He's led an international company, ran the Olympics (an international affair), been a lead figure on Homeland security and been tight on international/national terror threats as a governor (even skipped W's 2nd inauguration because of a nuclear terror threat to Boston.).

This is a smart guy with a good team. What's was Gov. Reagan's foreign policy experience . . . . He has a pretty good record there as POTUS but not much of a resume before. They are both exceptional LEADERS/EXECUTIVES and get good people around them.

Ronald Reagan had been speaking consistently on foreign policy subjects, first in the pay of GE, then as a Goldwater man, then in his California political career, then on his national radio show, and then as a national candidate, for a full-quarter century before assuming the Presidency. Furthermore, he did not change his philosophical or ideological approach to those subjects at all in that time.

Romney doesn't have a record even vaguely like that.

You're Right,

One day Romney is for Terrorism, the next day he is against. One day he is for a nuclear Iran the next day he is against. Good points! Let's not forget these and let Romney off so easily.

But typical of the Romney cultists.

The comparison with Reagan is absurd -- that's all. Romney has little track record in foreign affairs. His rhetoric is correct; but given the disconnect between his rhetoric and action -- and rhetoric and rhetoric -- on other subjects, we should not simply trust it as given.

I was just responding to your comment:

Furthermore, he did not change his philosophical or ideological approach to those subjects at all in that time.

Also there is a huge connect between his words and actions. His healthcare plan, his insisting no state help to the old Iranian leader, his fight against gay marriage his constant cuts of Liberal spending, etc.

What's typical is your silly dismissal of a great speach that had a great affect on those in the audience. It's cheap and easy to dismiss people as a cultist when yo don't agree with them, but maybe we (and Romney) just have some good points.

Seems unlikely, though.

Gee, doesn't that sound like what John McCain said 6 months ago when Iran defied the U.N. "deadline?"

Keeping in mind Romney's wait and see approach on President Bush/McCain's troop surge, this man has shown no leadership on foreign policy or a unique thought.

Didn't he?

I seem to remember a minor bruhaha about it here with a discussion about whether he should have waited longer or not to announce his support.

Which has a lot to do with why Brownback didn't, IMO. He has a pretty urgent need to differentiate himself from the big 3 if he wants a chance to gain traction and raise the funds he needs.

the power of the man's intellect just cuts through the fog of ignorance like a xenon element searchlight.

Heck, the South African experience tells us we can drive Ahmadinejad's ethnic minority government into the ground in little more than a decade. And indicting him will really put the fear of God into him. Remember that word: Fear.

I'm just left slackjawed with amazement that we didn't see the obvious way out of this predicament earlier. I attribute this to Romneys' private sector experience, myself.

Romney brings a new perspective to foreign affairs that is desperately needed if we are going to regain the mantle of being the party of competence in the foreign stage in the eyes of the public.

I like the simple approach he used to present his plan because it will be far easier to sell to the public as its in simple language and very practical.

Simple is how the American people like it.

he advertised consulting with Israel over how to deal with Iran and played up divestment as an Israeli scheme. Pure freakin brilliance, I say. I don't know why we haven't done this before. That's obviously the ticket to getting countries to sign on.

Border. I suspect most of the candidates and all the frontrunners will be strong on the war . The border issues may be the distinquishing factor.

Now I'm a tenative Romney supporter right now, but this really isn't much.

Truthfully I'd perfer a candidate who kept his mouth shut on the issue, and followed Teddy's advice: "Speak softly and carry a big stick."

I understand the sentiment but until you have a big stick you have to speak loudly to be heard. The former governor has a small stick for now.

So jb

You state: Romney has some key points on Iran. At the end of the video you will notice a ringing endorsement of his words. Here is some more on his Iran plan for Romney's Press Shop:

Do you have a direct line to that press shop, or even a seat there? Or do you get your info direct from President Hinckley?

You do seem remarkably well informed about his campaign and in an advocacy role for Mr. Romney here on RS.

Another South Park Republican spouting off !

Sorry me and Hinckley haven't talked since he told me to start my blog.

As for the Press Shop I got it from here, just a quick google search. You should try google, it's really taking the Net by storm.

Nice try though...
