By Jix
The polls in Michigan have just closed, and Fox News, CNN, and others are now projecting Mitt Romney as the winner of Michigan. The question is what does this mean in the race for the Republican nomination?
So far there have been three major primary/caucus contests, each producing a different winner and each state arguably playing to that winner's strengths. With South Carolina a few days away and the possibility that before Super Tuesday there could be as many as five different winners of the five early contests (Iowa - Huckabee, N.H. - McCain, Mich. - Romney, S.C. - Thompson, Fla. - Rudy), the recipe is there for a long primary season despite its early start. In all likelihood this race could become a delegate hunt among the candidates and give the convention this summer a bit more interest. The race is so fluid that plausible scenarios can be developed for any of the top five candidates to become the nominee.

By Jix
So I was looking around at www.Fred08.com a little while ago, and I came across Fred's comments on HillaryCare. I thought the video was pretty good, reminded me of the Michael Moore video he put out while he was testing the waters a few months back.
Personally, I am a fan of these online video "updates" that Fred has put out over the past few weeks, and I think that it is something that all of the other candidates could take from if someone other than Fred were nominated. It is a wonderful medium to speak directly to the voters, and if used properly it could be a powerful political asset.'

Posted at 10:18pm on Aug. 11, 2007 Romney Wins! (big surprise...)
By Jix
According to Marc Ambinder, Mitt Romney won the 2007 Iowa Straw Poll with roughly 31% of the vote. Mike Huckabee came in second with 18.1%. The full results can be found here: http://marcambinder.theatlantic.com/
In results sure to make Ron Paul supporters cry foul, he only recieved a meager 9.1% of the vote. As the only "true conservative" in the race, this is truly a blow for the conservative movement.

Posted at 3:20am on Jul. 21, 2007 Is Rudy a Nixon Republican or a Reagan Republican?
By Jix
A few days ago the Washington Post published an article entitled "R. Milhous Giuliani"
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/07/17/AR200707...
It brings up an interesting point--Is Rudy a Nixon Republican or a Reagan Republican?
From the outset, it is clear where Michael Gerson stands:
"To begin with, the ideological shift would be greater than meets the eye. Giuliani plays up his continuity with the Republican past, particularly with Ronald Reagan. But Reagan, of course, was a committed social conservative who expressed reservations about choosing George H.W. Bush as his running mate because of his questionable pro-life views. Giuliani's style and approach are actually much closer to those of another politically successful Republican president: Richard Nixon, pre-Watergate."

Posted at 3:27am on Jun. 20, 2007 What would a Fred Thompson Platform look like?
By Jix
I was perusing FDT's website this evening, and came upon an "about" section. It provided a brief biography and discussed much of Fred's life in public service. As I read through it I noticed a theme repeating over and over - his political philosophy is one based on First Principles. These first principles are derived from our Founding Fathers and include faith in a freedom, free markets, and the rule of law.

Sen. Fred Thompson sent a video message to the National Right to Life Conference. Here is a link to the video:

It was a very good, yet brief, talk. During it, he discusses everything from abortion to judges to his position on embryonic stem cells. For a pro-lifer like me this was all good news. I look forwa

Posted at 3:30am on Jun. 6, 2007 Healthcare - A Matter of First Principles
By Jix
It's interesting to hear the debate, and indeed the contrast, between conservatives and liberals as to the correct approach to address the high costs of health insurance. In our country, there are two areas of our economy where the major force impeding progress is the intrusion of the government: healthcare and education (I could probably name more, but I will spare you of that). In those two areas, we see the most prevalent influence of the big government, nanny state mentality that stifles individual choice and hamstrings the free market. Unless I am mistaken, each and every major Democrat running for president is advocating some form of universal healthcare. Socialism by any other name...
