By JohnRichardson
For anyone interested, Andrew Coyle at Maclean's (Steyn's co-defendant)has been live blogging the proceedings for the last three days .
I haven't read every word, but what I have would be funny, if it wasn't real.

Posted at 5:59pm on May 22, 2008 Rep. Jeb Hensarling's memo to colleagues outlining a strategy for the GOP
By JohnRichardson
The Washington Times is reporting this memo has been circulated among the Republican Study Committee by Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-Tx) I just thought I'd share it with everyone.
AN ACTION PLAN FOR HOUSE REPUBLICANS:
BOLD, SIMPLE, AND DIFFERENT THAN THE DEMOCRATS
1) THE END OF PORK-BARREL SPENDING
House Republicans are committed to ending pork-barrel spending. We will not wait on the Democrat Majority to end “Bridges to Nowhere†and “Monuments to Meâ€â€”we declare an immediate earmark moratorium and pledge to reform the system. We also pledge to uphold any future veto of a non-defense spending bill that is pork laden and does not lead to a balanced budget.

Posted at 8:59am on May 18, 2008 Iron Man/Marvel's ambitious slate of films.
By JohnRichardson
I saw Iron Man yesterday, I enjoyed it immensely, especially how quick the sanctimonious, left wing reporter was to jump in bed with Stark and Stan Lee's cameo as Hugh Hefner.
Marvel has three more films slated for release this year:
The Punisher, Iron Fist, and The Hulk. The Hulk
lists RDjr as "Tony Stark" in the cast credits, perhaps we'll see some Hulk-on-Iron Man action when it comes out in June.

Posted at 12:00pm on May 14, 2008 This is too rich: MLK memorial outsourced to China?
By JohnRichardson
The New York Sun has the story about the investigation into this, and the money quote:
A South Carolina stone carver, Clint Button, said models of the King statue look a lot like sculptures of Mao that Mr. Lei is well-known for. “You could literally pluck King’s head off and put Mao’s head on. It looks like the same thing,” Mr. Button said.

By JohnRichardson
I just spotted a porker soaring overhead:
May 1 (Bloomberg) -- Northwestern University withdrew an invitation for the Reverend Jeremiah Wright to receive an honorary degree at this year's commencement.
Wright, former pastor to Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, was selected to be honored at the June ceremony in Evanston, Illinois, on the recommendation of faculty committees, Alan Cubbage, vice president for university relations, said in a statement.

Posted at 4:50pm on Jun. 8, 2007 UK Charity Comission: George Galloway's charity received improper funding
By JohnRichardson
Courtesy the Manchester Guardian:
George Galloway's Mariam Appeal, the campaign he set up to oppose UN sanctions on Iraq, received at least £230,000 in improper donations, the Charity Commission will report today. The money came from the Jordanian businessman Fawaz Zureikat, chairman of the charity, after he paid illicit kickbacks to Saddam Hussein's regime in exchange for a big contract under the oil-for-food programme, according to the report.

Posted at 2:09pm on Jun. 4, 2007 CS-Monitor stark contrast to WA-PO Immigration puff piece
By JohnRichardson
The Washington Post and the Christian Science Monitor both have stories on the immigration bill, let's do a little compare/contrast
The Wa-Po piece is entitled: Backers of Immigration Bill More Optimistic
The CS-Monitor's: Red-state senators feel the heat of a fiery immigration debate
The Washington Post says:
After a week at home with their constituents, the Senate architects of a delicate immigration compromise are increasingly convinced that they will hold together this week to pass an overhaul of the nation's immigration laws, with momentum building behind one unifying theme: Today's immigration system is too broken to go unaddressed.

Posted at 10:38am on Jun. 3, 2007 Lamar Alexander "GOP Deer in the Headlights"
By JohnRichardson
There are a couple of posts about the reception Lamar Alexander got from his constituents in Middle Tennessee. A first hand account from Bear Creek Ledger:
People clapped after Sherry’s statement. Lamar returned to his agenda of extolling his virtues and self promotion. He told us he’d talk for a few minutes, show his video and then would be there to take questions individually. At that point one of the men erupted talking about the immigration deal made behind closed doors with La Raza. Then things got a bit testy and Darrin from the Putnam County Republican Party also got combative. He basically told the guy this is our party and if you don’t like it leave. Darrin finally settled down a bit and told the audience this is how it’s going to be…..Lamar will speak for a few minutes, then show the video and then he will take individual questions from people. There wasn’t going to be any townhall type forum here. My guess? Lamar can’t take having to answer questions to a large group of people who weren’t of his “sort”! Lamar really doesn’t want to get his hands dirty with the little people, you know, the constituents.

By JohnRichardson
From Bill Bennett's show this morning — Bennett had Steve Moore from the WSJ with Mark Krikorian, NRO contributor, on: Bill asked Mark and Steve on air if the NR debate with the Journal would happen, Steve said: "any time, delighted to do it." Steve then said "And Bill you'd be a good moderator," to which Mark said, "I take that as a yes to NR's invite and I agree, Bill you'd be great."

Posted at 3:24pm on May 31, 2007 Has DHS ordered Boeing to cease work on the Border Fence and SBI?
By JohnRichardson
That is what Glenn Spencer at Amercan Patrol is reporting, he says his source is someone named Chuck Floyd:
To: Glenn Spencer
I talked to the Chief Procurement Officer of DHS today and asked her what was going on with Boeing. She was surprised I knew so much. She said that they had instructed Boeing not to work on the fence and that a new task order would be out in July, so they have no intention to do anything now. She said that the SBI Net is on hold for now, but Boeing is still getting paid for their staff.

By JohnRichardson
Fred Thompson predicts Immigration Bill will fail (h/t Insty):
"Nobody believes them. It goes to the bigger issue of the lack of credibility our government has these days," said Thompson, who was greeted with hoots and applause from the 2,300 convention attendees who filled a ballroom at the McCormick Place convention center.

Posted at 5:12pm on May 21, 2007 Immigration Reform and firearms (A second attempt)
By JohnRichardson
I'm probably the only one that is concerned about this, considering the first time I posted on this topic, it got no response, but I'm concerned enough about it to try again.
There is an issue I haven't seen discussed, whether or not these Z-visa holders will be able to purchase firearms.
Some may think that you have to be a citizen but that is not the case, pace the ATF:
(R1) May nonimmigrant aliens legally in the United States purchase or possess firearms and ammunition while in the United States?

I'm not going to rehash things that have been said, but there is an issue I haven't seen discussed, whether or not these Z-visas will be able to purchase firearms.
Some may think that you have to be a citizen but that is not the case, pace the ATF:

Nonimmigrant aliens generally are prohibited from possessing or receiving (purchasing) firearms and ammunition in the United States.

Posted at 5:41pm on May 1, 2007 It looks like Fred Thompson has some people worried
By JohnRichardson
h/t Insty
Nashville law circles were abuzz last week about professional snoops – either private investigators or opposition research political types - combing public records in Metro buildings looking for potential dirt on Thompson. Property records seemed to be at the top of their list.
http://www.nashvillecitypaper.com/index.cfm?section=9&screen=news&news_i...
I think that this is a good sign, regardless of whether it is Repubs,Dems, or both doing the digging. I'm not sure why property records would be so important, I guess they are hoping to tie him to some unsavory deals or some Gaia offending project/site. Thompson is one of the few that I would be genuinely surprised if they found some really nasty out about him.
