Antarctic getting colder , Now has largest sea ice pack on record

This is not about Global Warming. This is about how the press goes about making you worry about Global Warming.

From The Alfred-Wegener-Institut für Polar- und Meeresforschung via IDW online

Bremerhaven, April 21, 2008. The Antarctic deep sea gets colder, which might stimulate the circulation of the oceanic water masses. This is the first result of the Polarstern expedition of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in the Helmholtz Association that has just ended in Punta Arenas/Chile. At the same time satellite images from the Antarctic summer have shown the largest sea-ice extent on record. In the coming years autonomous measuring buoys will be used to find out whether the cold Antarctic summer induces a new trend or was only a "slip".

Boy I had to look around for this one. It barely got translated from the German. Isn't that odd though we are so concerned with climate change these days that major events in Antarctic go unremarked unnoticed and in general unheralded ? You would think the major news organizations would pick this up ?

Now when the subject was the Arctic ice receding we got an amazingly different response.

From the New York Times
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/02/science/earth/02arct.html

Over all, the floating ice dwindled to an extent unparalleled in a century or more, by several estimates.

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/21/science/21arctic.html

The ice retreat has been particularly striking this year. The Alaskan side of the Arctic Ocean has stretches of thousands of square miles of open water; the fabled Northwest Passage through the islands of northern Canada was free of ice for weeks;

Bloomberg News

``We have already witnessed major losses in sea ice, but our research suggests that the decrease over the next few decades could be far more dramatic than anything that has happened so far,'' Holland said yesterday in a statement posted on the NCAR Web site. ``These changes are surprisingly rapid.''

And going back to 2005 on the VOA

Scientists say new U.S. and Canadian satellite images have tracked what they call a stunning reduction in Arctic Sea ice following the northern summer. The shrinkage is far more extensive than normal for the fourth consecutive year. The researchers say the current rate of decline could mean that the Arctic would be free of ice well before the end of the century.

What is even stranger is that Arctic Ice now seems to be in an uptrend year over year and had a remarkable bounce back from the summer.

Are we in danger of being flooded out? Well not from melting sea ice. Both caps are growing and the important one the Antarctic is growing rapidly. The arctic could melt completely and we wouldn't notice the oceans going up an inch.

Are we in danger of doing really stupid things because the news media is failing in its job of reporting facts ? Yes indeed, and Global Warming is just the tip of that iceberg.

Crossposted at The Minority Report

Dude, come on. This just *proves* that global warming is real.

[crickets]

Fight On!

he looked down and said, "see I told you the ice caps are melting." Sounds like a sequel is in order.

The reason global warming is not accepted in the southern hemisphere is because those darn emperor penguins are clinging to their sea ice.

This is about propaganda and media manipulation - good subjects, with much to argue about

The actual science is much more intense, boring and hard to understand. Not as much fun to argue about.

But, the promise of this post is to make the interpretation of the science easy once you understand the politics of the scientists.

I am guessing you are not a doctorate level scientist and, like me, not really qualified to judge the science involved.

If that's the case, you do realize you are letting others do the thinking for you in this case. And you are sided with the minority.

The minority may be right in this case. I sure hope so.

perhaps, but in thins case I am making a decision based, not on science but on history.

You see there is a long history of people trying to frighten me to death using science.

First was the population bomb
then was the silent spring
then was the new ice age
then was the freon/ozone scare
then it was nuclear winter
then it was Y2K
then it was global warming
and now that that is not working out it has been redefined as Global climate change.

From where I sit it is you who are the gullible one.

it was short sighted computer programming*

I'm outside everyday for at least 6 hours, and I bet I can predict a better 30 minute weather forecast than just about any meteorologist lacking his electronic equipment. I'm not a doctor, but I have to know the weather if I don't want to get soaked during the 25-30 minutes I'm away from my truck delivering. I rely on my experience sharpened instincts as to whether or not I need my raingear. When it comes to global warming, I rely on my bullspit instinct as to whether or not a so-called "expert" is selling me the bull or the spit. This is formed from personal research easily accessible to any average brained person with a computer, and my personal dislike of eating feces sandwiches. Global warming is the proverbial feces sandwich with extra corn.
Tim Schieferecke

how would your method help people in FL during hurricane season?

and what did this mean?

"This is formed from personal research easily accessible to any average brained person with a computer"

that stuff on the computer came from a scientist.

That's common sense, and I wouldn't have to consult a scientist to know what to do. Climate change occurs 4 times a year here in Kansas. I have two brothers that are scientists, and they agree with me about the absolute scam of global warming. They've both told me that these computer models of doom lack the sophistication of all possible extraneous factors and as such are only as good as the data allowed to be included.
Tim Schieferecke

Everything is concrete block construction down here.

I love Florida, but it's too darn muggy for my tastes. I always go in January. It's like the Garden of Eden then.
Tim Schieferecke

1) How is global warming theory going to help the people in Florida during hurricane season? No one has made a single correct prediction based on global warming. I will grant you that it appears to be very good at "explaining" past events, everything from unseasonable hail to cows producing less milk. Then again, astrology and reading pigeon entrails would also be useful tools for such work. A truly objective observer might note the fact that Al Gore and the Oracle of Delphi are running roughly neck-and-neck.

2) The weather forecasts come from meteorologists, not climatologists. Meteorology has a proven track record of (more or less) predicting weather. Climatology doesn't.

3) Regarding your post up-thread about voting with the majority: voting is NOT part of science. Neither is "consensus", for the very reason that we could argue all day about what exactly constitutes a consensus (who's vote counts, who's doesn't how much weight does a particular vote get, blah, blah, blah). Science depends on proof, and so far the AGW alarmists haven't provided any.

And, no, I'm not a doctoral-level scientist. I'm an electrical and computer engineer with more than 30 years of practical experience, a LOT of experience with control systems and computer modeling, and a pretty good ability to know when someone is tap-dancing around holes in an unworkable hypothesis.

I personally like this abstract

The atmospheric greenhouse effect, an idea that authors trace back to the traditional works of Fourier 1824, Tyndall 1861, and Arrhenius 1896, and which is still supported in global climatology, essentially describes a fictitious mechanism, in which a planetary atmosphere acts as a heat pump driven by an environment that is radiatively interacting with but radiatively equilibrated to the atmospheric system. According to the second law of thermodynamics such a planetary machine can never exist. Nevertheless, in almost all texts of global climatology and in a widespread secondary literature it is taken for granted that such mechanism is real and stands on a firm scientific foundation. In this paper the popular conjecture is analyzed and the underlying physical principles are clarified. By showing that (a) there are no common physical laws between the warming phenomenon in glass houses and the fictitious atmospheric greenhouse effects, (b) there are no calculations to determine an average surface temperature of a planet, (c) the frequently mentioned difference of 33 degrees Celsius is a meaningless number calculated wrongly, (d) the formulas of cavity radiation are used inappropriately, (e) the assumption of a radiative balance is unphysical, (f) thermal conductivity and friction must not be set to zero, the atmospheric greenhouse conjecture is falsified.

Freedom of Religion not Freedom from Religion

Considering that every single skeptic of the AGW religion is immediately dismissed as a bought and paid for stooge of industry, I find it amusing when AGW devotees complain about politics and media manipulation in science ...

Romney/Pace 2008

First the post is about the way the Mass Media prioritizes news items. It is not about simplifying science nor is it about the politics of scientists.

Second your own examples undercut your argument.

Doctor recommends surgery: Why not see what he recommends if you have a different cardiologist performing the surgery ? Or if you tell him your insurance won't cover it.

Engineer has a breakthrough technology: Oh man I nearly laughed myself silly on this.
Here are a few for you

1. Coldfusion
2. Water powered car
3. Magnetic energy extracting motor
4. Zero point power

Oh yes you would do very well too verify your magic engineer before you invested.

GPS system says take left. Better make certain its not onto the highway at rush hour. Of course that assumes you are smarter than a GPS.

Classic misdirection. Houdini would be proud.

You are connecting the potential danger from massive pollution to a known enemy, the press. And of course, the potential danger gets hit with the collateral damage.

It's effective. It works - it's convinced many conservatives that global warming is a scam foisted on us by the media and lefties.

Some like Newt are too smart, however.

Somehow I am certain, that I have a better knowledge of what I was doing than you do. Call it a hunch.

What I am showing is that the press has not handled the news in anything close to a manner meant to inform the public.

As to global warming being a scam that is the subject of a much longer diatribe.

Lets try a couple of things here.
1. The earths temperature is changing.
2. The earth is warming.
3. The warming is unusual
4. The warming is caused by changes in the earths atmosphere
5. CO2 is the primary cause despite being the weakest of the greenhouse gases.
6. We will have over 5 degress of warming which implies that the the atmosphere will have to hold over 10 times the amount of CO2 increase since the industrial revolution.
7. There is no stabilizing effect built into the biosphere.
8. Warming will be bad for us all.
9. It will be better to stop the warming than take advantage
10. It is possible to do something about it.
11. We can predict what will happen in a manner to make intelligent adjustments to the biosphere.

Which is of course why I just contented myself with noting that when it comes to cold episodes the press is blind.

You won't find many comments here that would say AGW is a "scam", etc. You will find lots of us who are unwilling to make major economic dislocations on the basis of questionable "science" no matter how many PhD's are aligned in agreement.

The models don't work, that's a simple fact. The predictions of disaster are so far down the pike as to be unmeasurable for all practical purposes. The same folks who are on this particular bandwagon don't have a good track record with disaster predictions. And, finally, even if the globe is warming, whether or not it's simply a natural cycle or "caused" by something we're doing is a real question.

None of the above want to make me support any actions that will have even a minor adverse effect on the economy, let alone the major dislocations Algore, etc are proposing.

Want to do something that will make a difference? Work to ease the NIMBY restrictions on nuclear power plants. Replace coal and oil fired plants with nukes. No greenhouse gas. Reduces our dependency on fossil fuels.

CongressCritter™: Never have so few felt like they were owed so much by so many for so little.

Quite frankly, the standard of proof is not good enough. And the Warmists unscientific conduct, especially toward skeptics - who are supposed to be welcomed into the process - have made it even less so.

Their models practically never work, their theories are (almost deliberately) unfalsifiable and their response to criticism of their work is to accuse critics of being stooges of industry.

The use of the Press to deliberately spread false alarmism using tortured science is just the icing on the cake.

Romney/Pace 2008

the proverbial "icing" on the cake. If you want to know a true measure of temperature, it's the mailman not the groundhog. When you see your mailman or woman wearing shorts for the first time, it's a sure sign of spring. In past years, I have broke out the shorts in mid March here in Kansas. I didn't even get them out of winter storage till the second week of April this time. Newt is a newt on this.
Tim Schieferecke

Shorts are still in storage. They likely will be for a few more weeks.
