The Resurgent Fred Thompson
By Ken Taylor Posted in 2008 — Comments (86) / Email this page » / Leave a comment »
For awhile many had counted Fred out. Even this Thompson supporter had questions concerning whether he would be able to hang on in the early Primaries. While never wavering in my support, I did wonder what it was going to take in order for Fred to catch on especially after the high numbers he had just prior to and immediately after first announcing his run for the Presidency.
The first indication that Fred was beginning to turn the campaign around came with the results of the Iowa Caucus. Fred had campaigned only twice in the State before his exhaustive bus tour just before the Primary and he literally went from Iowa obscurity to a respectable third place finish behind Romney who had spent untold days and millions of dollars on Iowa and Huckabee who had also spent much time in the Hawkeye State.
Then came the South Carolina Presidential Debate last Thursday. I had the opportunity to cover the debate throughout the day since it was in Myrtle Beach, SC where I call home. Fred was the first candidate to arrive at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center and had been in the area covering three cities the day before on his " Clear Conservative Choice Hands Down, " Bus Tour of the Palmetto State.
Behind the scenes most in the media were counting Fred out. Then the debate began and Fred stepped forward and took control with excellent detailed answers to every question asked him. He is the only candidate that took on the real Mike Huckabee in questioning and revealing the true Arkansas record and Fred had the most memorable line of the evening when he suggested that the Navy, if further provoked by Iran would be sending them to, "see those virgins," they have been wanting to see.
As I watched the other media sit up and take notice of Fred and actually quoting him on their lap tops while writing reports and having a somewhat , " Ho Hum, " attitude toward the other candidates, I thought, " Fred is starting to catch on. " As the audience began leaving the debate hall, most of the conversations where about Fred Thompson. When he entered the Spin Room after the debate reporters who had just glanced at McCain, Romney, Huckabee and Giuliani when they entered swarmed Fred with questions. In fact he was the only candidate to remain in the Spin Room and talk with reporters after his appearance on Hannity and Combs.
The Fox News Focus Group overwhelmingly selected Fred as the winner of the debate and the rest of the media followed suit the next day as the pundits and analysts began their post debate review. Most of the clips were of Fred and his stellar performance. In the polls he received a bounce after the debate and here in South Carolina while he remains in third place an interesting twist is taking place in the internal statistics of the State polling.
When respondents are asked what issue they consider the most important as they make their choice for the Primary on January 19th, the number one issue is illegal immigration at 24% and Fred Thompson is the choice for those who consider that the number one issue. The second issue for voters in this State is the economy at 23% and Fred is a close second, a statistical tie with Huckabee and McCain who lead in the overall polls for the State.
While Fred was talking to the media after the debate I asked him how important South Carolina was for his campaign. He stated that he, " was putting all of his cards on the table in South Carolina now that he was here in the South on his home turf." Fred is going all out in this State and his bus tour is visiting every city, town and township between now and the primary next Saturday.
Fred Thompson campaign posters that had been only scattered here and there are beginning to pop up everywhere and in large numbers. His campaign commercials are on the radio regularly as well as television and in the papers. The voters of the Palmetto State who had initially polled Fred in first place in the weeks after he first announced are beginning to take a fresh look at the former Tennessee Senator and his conservative values and ideas.
In fact of the candidates running Fred Thompson is the ONLY candidate who can honestly and truthfully claim the title of conservative and follow in the footsteps of the much touted , "Reagan Coalition." The other candidates invoke Reagan and try to claim his ideals, but Fred is the only GOP candidate who has a true track record throughout his political career that follows real conservative values and Reaganism.
Huckabee, as Fred so appropriately stated in the debate has a tax and spending record that resembles a Democrat and not a Republican. Romney changes his ideas with the weather. McCain, conservative on defense has been a traitor in the past to the GOP and the mantle of Reagan. Rudy is a social liberal who says he will act as a conservative if elected to follow the GOP platform. While that is well and good, Fred Thompson is the only candidate who actually has real conservative credentials and can honestly claim participation as part of the, "Reagan Coalition."
South Carolina is starting to see the truth behind the conservative masks of the other candidates and the honest and real conservatism of Fred Thompson. January 19th is less than a week away and Fred is taking his conservative message to the people of South Carolina and the people are responding. His fund raising is up, the crowds have been good and enthusiastic and the Thompson bus is rolling through the State bringing a clear and Conservative choice to the voters and the voters like what they are seeing and hearing!

As Thompson is the only candidate I've sent pesos to - and early on - it's clear that Fred is the one getting the education, perhaps too little too late. The sleeping giant awoke in the last debate, the FDT we've been waiting for. But this "at my own pace" thing is not valid in a marketing war. If you want to take a different approach, make sure it's effective (see: Huckabee's church method).
My sense is that he's well-positioned for a VP role and another bite at the POTUS apple the next go-round.
"I can say - not as a patriotic bromide...that the United States of America is the greatest, the noblest and...the only moral country in the history of the world. - Ayn Rand
I doubt he is interested in VP and I doubt it is good for the party. If he runs as VP and they win he will be 74 next time - not very appealing and I doubt the party wants another VP who is not positioned to be a presidential candidate after the two terms.
What's he thinking making all those babies?! If he's young enough for that, I think he's young enough for a run in 8 years. 80 is the new 70!
"I can say - not as a patriotic bromide...that the United States of America is the greatest, the noblest and...the only moral country in the history of the world. - Ayn Rand
It might be the new 70 for 80 year olds but I doubt the electorate will be all that interested. And it is not som uch they are old and feeble but they are ready to pass the generational torch. All ready this year you are seeing it on the Dem side, and by 2016 I don't think you will find a majority in either party still looking to those brought up in the 60's for leadership - we are ready to move on.
Republicans win by adhering to their principles. We cannot win through attempts to become more like Democrats. Fred is the only man in the race that has held these principles and acted upon them throughout his entire life. He's also, coincidentally, assembled the best and most carefully detailed proposal for just about every issue facing American voters this year, as well as some that will face Americans of future generations.

I am amazed at how much impact you think a single debate can have. Not even a week ago Romney had an impressive debate performance going into the NH primaries, and even though he was only a few points behind McCain he was unable to make up any ground. I think you are overstating the bump Fred might get from the debate performance and his last minute push.
You bring up the Luntz focus in your post. While you are correct in stating that the undecideds unanimously agreed that Fred won the debate, you failed to mention that they also unanimously agreed that it was too little too late and that they would not be voting for Fred. Again, I think you are overstating the bump Fred will get from the debate.
In your piece you mention a 'bounce' he has gotten in the polls. Well, I am looking at the polling data and I see no such bounce in SC or nationwide. Actually, the latest polling data for SC is 1/9, before the last debate. If you have a link to the poll that shows this bounce please do share, but as of this post I don't see anything on RCP.
I agree that Thompson outflanks all the other candidates but he has run his campaign poorly. I wish I could share your optimism but I can't live up in the clouds like that. Fred's 'bounce' that he may have picked up will not be able to withstand the aftershock of whoever wins MI.
His online campaign 'Fill up the Red Truck' raised over $224,000 in 24 hours. That was his biggest one-day total since launching the Red Truck campaign just before the Iowa caucus.
He also gained over 3,000 new 'friends' on his website.
That is HUGE. Since the debate the total on the campaign has gone from $540000 to $872,142. It may not be Romney numbers, but that is a very large bounce for Fred.

I don't understand this. A JC Watts endorsement would be great, but isn't it early to be talking about a VP pick. It's not even likely Fred will be the nominee and I say this even though I'm a devoted Fredhead. Is the theory now he's trying to boost his campaign by namimg his VP five months before others have in the past? If so, will all those who declare for the presidency have to name their running mate right from the start? That's how we do it here in Kentucky, but I don't like it all that well. Seems like their looking for a way to jumpstart the campaign. I like Watts, I'm just dubious of making this kind of committment at this time.
This seems like nothing more than the Politico "rumor" about Fred dropping out. I'd be real suprised if this turns into anything in the short term Long term? Who knows.
My bet is that the rumor's got little to no substance to it.
But let's play 'what if'. If it's true, why would Fred do such a thing? Here's why. He's mired in 4th place (in the nationwide polls typically) after a sloppy early campaign. But suddenly a Bruce Lee-style debate performance in SC, there's a small buzz. No new polls are out, but his campaign contributions have picked up dramatically. Got a little Fred-mentum going. But it could die down easily, especially if the SC primary fails to yield him at least 20%. So.......
Name JC Watts as your VP. Headlines will abound, and while some would rightly call it a desperate move, it's more buzz. The JC Watts name is overwhelmingly positive, and a little Fred-mentum might turn into a serious re-alignment of the stars. Huck came out of the second tier in a fairly short time, it can still happen to Fred.
And Watts is a powerful name, especially among movement conservatives. An alliance like that would move Fred from being the 'most consistently conservative' candidate to the 'we OWN the conservative side of this campaign' category.
Additionally JC Watts is ANYTHING but lazy and disinterested, and his name alone would impart a sense of vigor, youthfulness, and raw energy -- and we have to admit, the tag on Fred about being lazy and a less than enthusiastic candidate is still floating around there. And JC Watts is photogenic, telegenic, articulate, and well respected. Let HIM do some stumping and townhall rallies, in SC and elsewhere. Holy cow!
The 'adult in the room' would have hitched his wagon to a rising conservative star in the party. Deadly combination. And if nothing else, he wins OK and TX in a walk. Fair number of delegates.
So I think it's just talk, but who knows.....potentially a desperate but savvy move.
Stare decisis is fo' suckas -- Feddie
Fred has been getting blasted for trying to stick with the "old way" of declaring his presidential candidacy by waiting - and he was accused of being "too late." And now you want to criticize him for trying to change the playing field on the others? Where was the big stink when Romney, Giuliani, Huckabee, et.al. declared months before anyone had done it in the past?
The rules have changed, and there's no reason Fred shouldn't do a little rule-changing of his own. Then let's talk about who's "too late"...
The Unofficial RedState FAQ
“You are not only responsible for what you say, but also for what you do not say. ” - Martin Luther
I watched the focus group and although there were several people in the room that said they thought it was too little too late, there were also several who said "no it's not". So let the spin stop here.
"All that need be done for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing."
I hear they are good friends and I would hate to have Fred need to attack and expose John's dismal record in order to pull ahead. Hopefully at that point, Fred would be well enough ahead with John sinking so it would be unnecessary.

but Rush, Flee and others are going to go full-bore against McCain Monday and Tuesday. They were already hammering him Thurs. and Fri. This is crunch time in MI and McCain must be taken out. We'll deal with Mitt later.
You may not be interested in war, but war is interested in you.
Where are the Conservative Republican's? The ones in the Congress; the ones that we know are strong Conservatives? What does Mike Pence and Eric Cantor, John Cornyn, John Shaddegg and the likes in Congress think of Fred? Boy oh boy a glance of the Senate is scary! Hardly a Conservative left. There are a few in the House. Yikes. Anyway, where are they?
If the answer is a strategic one of "well they usually wait until...." that is BS! We cannnot let these moderates take control, they are too unstable and seem to barter with their principles!
These people need to come out like Rep. King has and endorse the Conservative. Lets hear from those that we know are the real deal!
It has been declared by many including that "Biggest Loser" Huckabust that the Conservative movement is finished! Well these "well respected" (for now) Conservatives better get out in front of the media and support the Conservative and NOT the Media Darling's!
Where does Newt stand? Is Newt still alive?? He has disappeared. Come on Gingrich, you said that if no Conservative was in the race by now that you would get in; so there is one? Is that what you are telling us by not announcing that you are in the race? Tell the world who you support Newt! How about Santorum and Delay; where does their support stand? Why have all of these so-called "Conservative Leaders" abandoned the party's only Conservative when it is so critical to nominate one to fight off the liberals? Rudy cant hit Hillary on her socialist policy when he is no better except in management? For God sake Rudy thinks that George Will is the most Conservative mind out there...HUH? He's another in the mold of the hand me downs like Bill Kristol...an elite snob with clout. How can Huckabee...nevermind, How can Mitt take her on when he has flipped and flopped and blew his own fotune on his way to the nomination? We need a person who will expose these liberals with a stark contrast in ideals!
I thought that since the party was in such decline that the ones who fought to get us here would be fighting for the true Conservative by now!?!
Seriously Conservatives; What the...?
2008; Its about a Commander In Chief!
no longer vote for a candidate on principle, but on his/her chance of winning. People like to claim to be something because of it's status - i.e. christian, conservative, etc. Not that they follow the principles, but it does sound and look good. But it was Jesus that touched the fig tree to wilt it, not because it didn't look like fig tree, but because it didn't bear the fruit. So claiming to be or supporting a conservative is all well and good, but do you bear the fruit and support those that do?
--roxer
Very interesting comparison. I think, as supporters, we will see who bears figs and who don't. I urge you to be a bearer and go to FRED08 and support his campaign.
We (my husband and I) never give to Presidential campaigns (most have more money than brains), but this time, we see a value.

Go Fred! We Believe.
has been advising Huckabee... He also speaks highly of Huckabee on news shows. Newt has sold out IMO.
Grow up. Rudy is a HELL of a lot better than Hillary on the single most important issue in '08, the war against global jihadism. His economic policy is a helluva lot better than anything she would throw out there and his immigration policy is also one of the few realistic plans mentioned. (I live in Texas...We are never going to be able to deport all of the illegals and that is an absolute fact. The military has to much to do to assist with that project and the police damn sure can't do it, and their normal job, alone.)
If Rudy and Mitt aren't eligible for 100% approval ratings from the ACU then I say, THANK GOD!!! Here's a newsflash for you...The vast majority of this country would not get 80% from the ACU. I don't need the President of the United States of America to be a slave to conservatism. I want the president to be slavishly devoted to Americanism. Since the demos are incapable of being devoted to anything other than political power, the GOP has always been my only hope. It must be remembered that the GOP is not merely the party of Reagan and Goldwater, it is also the party of the TR and Lincoln. There had better be room in the GOP for all those who believe in America, for they have nowhere else to go.
Stop insulting all of the other GOP candidates, other than Ron Paul that is, and make the case for your candidate. Whatever happens in the primaries, we are going to need to be able to unite as a party once we have a nominee.
Thanks for a look inside South Carolina. I've been wondering about changes on the ground since the debate. Sounds like things are going about as I hoped.
Go Fred!
As a Christian, what concerns me is my fellow Christians inability to separate feelings from fact. Likeability, keeping to generalities and making others “feel good” are the reason people like James and Tammy Faye Bakker continued to get financial donations from my Christian conservative brothers and sisters. “Hucksters” use your head people, every attempt to review his actual governing philosophies he deflects with wisecracks and 3 card Monte style tactics. Fred Thompson is THE ONLY candidate who has not been asked (by anyone) why he has changed his position in the last few years, because he has not. Simple.

"If you're looking for a real conservative, why are you supporting Huckabee? He's completely discredited himself. What about Fred Thompson? If you're looking for a real conservative?" -- Rush Limbaugh (1/7/08)
The headline from rushlimbaugh.com 1/11/2008
"Rush Recaps the GOP Debate: Thompson Finally Comes Alive"
and under the picture of Fred
"It looks like we have a conservative in the race, folks."
Now if Fred could just put a little energy in his campaign we could have a clear cut leader in the GOP field.
...at conservatives this election cycle. If we took everyone on this site (ok almost everyone) and asked them their collective trust in the MSM it would rank somewhere up there with OBL. And yet for the last month, we have allowed the people who hate conservatism push the two most liberal candidates as the only two who have a chance.
There is a constant bleating that if Romney/Thompson/Guiliani (fill in the blank) don't win in (fill in the blank) they're done. Ever wonder why you don't hear that McCain must win in MI? Or that Huck must win SC? They don't have any more money than Thompson, and less than Romney.
I can't believe that the group of people who rightfully pride themselves on voting issues is getting stampeded into supporting a pro-life John Edwards and the guy who has shivved the conservative movement more times than I can count.
If you don't like Thompson's stand on the issues...fine! We can agree to disagree. But by everything that is holy, PLEASE don't vote for someone based on who the drive-by media says is viable. That's liberal, mushheaded thinking. We're better than that. If you like Fred's stand on the issues...then vote for the guy! At least you'll be able to look yourself in the mirror in the morning.
"All that need be done for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing."
Though he needs to continue to place well. McCain can survive second place finishes in MI and SC.
Romney needs Michigan because he needs one of his first three states.
Fred needs South Carolina becuase that's his focus.
Huckabee, also, in my mind, needs South Carolina becuase his candidacy depends on the south, and if he loses it to Fred he has no path to nomination and Iowa is a distant memory.
Rudy has to win FL or he'll get out and endorse McCain.
The first three states have already voted and Romney already has a win. If he wins Michigan it will be his second. If McCain wins Michigan it will be a good result for him, but no more so than Huckabee winning South Carolina for his second or Romney winning his second in Nevada.
If any of these three fail to win a second state from Michigan, South Carolina and (the biggest) Nevada, then they will be struggling.
If any of these three wins two of those three states (say, McCain winning MI and SC; or Romney winning MI and Nevada) that candidate will be in a fairly good position.

Fred's getting close to $1,000,000 and has over 10,200 new friends. Woo hoo!
As of now, there are no polls out in SC since the debate. I suspect some will come out tomorrow. Any guesses on what they will show. I'm hoping for big #s for Fred.
I suspect a Fred jump and a Huckabee drop with McCain steady.
Something like:
McCain -- 25
Fred -- 20
Huck -- 20
Romney -- 10
Rudy -- 7
Paul -- 4
Undecided - 14
Choose any Republican candidate you want. If elected President, he will redefine the Republican party for a generation.
If you pick FRED THOMPSON he will redefine the Republican Party as the CONSERVATIVE party. The party of the founders of the republic and its founding principles.
If you choose otherwise, they will all redefine the Republican party as the party of open borders, sanctuary cities, in-state tuition and full social programs for all comers, legal or not.
Its time, take your pick.
Please spare me the "Fred Thompson is the only 'TRUE' conservative running." The only 'TRUE' conservative isn't running. Newt is sidelined right now because of McCain's lovely campaign finance reform. Guliani, Romney & Thompson are all reasonable choices for the nominee and none of them will support "open borders, sanctuary cities, in-state tuition and full social programs for all comers, legal or not" as you suggest. That is just ludicrous to suggest.
Don't forget that Thompson did support McCain-Fiengold: http://myclob.pbwiki.com/Fred%20Thompson%20shouldn't%20have%20supported%20Mccain-Fiengold
There is no perfect candidate out there and being a 'True' conservative holds little weight. Even Rush Finds Guliani, Romney & Thompson acceptable, you never hear him slam them on his show. Huckabee, McCain and Paul are a different story.
and he recently said he would not accept the nomination in the event of a brokered convention, but I believe otherwise. A Newt nomination would almost guarantee a November victory IMHO.
If any of the GOP candidates other than Fred Thompson get the nomination and then the Presidency, the party will be redefined forever more.

you are correct, if our destiny is set, then yes, only one is destined to win. OTOH, if you look at it from mathmatical probability, only the ones who are not running have zero chance. For example, one guy could be ten times as popular as another, but step in front of a bus. The guy in the race always has a chance because anything can happen. Oh crud, now I am talking theory, when I just bashed the lawyers for doing so on 2a lol

hey, my Cowboys lost, I have already been punished tonight :(
But seriously, I was talking tongue in cheek. GC i inferred from GC that he was implying that all contenders have a zero percent chance other than the eventual winner. That could only be correct if you think in terms of destiny. But if you are a betting man, destiny is meaningless, and you can only focus on probability. Even Paul has a percentage chance of winning, although it is not much greater than my own.

But GC did say "go ahead".
10 REASONS WHY I AM A CALVINIST
1. Calvinists tend to wear wool and cotton. Dispensationalists tend to wear lime-green polyester leisure suits.
2. John Calvin was French...being French is very chic.
3. Calvin sounds like Calvin Klein...and his clothes are very chic.
4. Calvinists can drink.
5. Calvinists can smoke.
6. Dispensationalists are into prophecy conferences where they talk about Star-Trek eschatology and the mark of the Beast. Calvinists have conferences on "life and culture", art, social justice and other high-brow things like that. Afterwards, we go to the local pub and talk about philosophy over a pint of Bass ale.
7. Calvinists have close ties with Scotland and Scotland is very cool: you know --Sean Connery, the movie Highlander, Bagpipes, the Loch Ness Monster, Glenlivet 18 year old Scotch, the movie Train Spotting, BraveHeart, etc.
8. Calvinists think we are smarter than anybody else.
9. It is more socially acceptable to say, "I go to Grace Presbyterian Church" than to say, "I go to Washed In The Blood Worship Center", "I go to Sonlife Charismatic Believers Assembly", or to say "I go to Boston Berean Bible Believing Baptist Bethel", or to say "I go to the Latter-Day-Rain Deliverance Tabernacle Prophecy Center, Inc.", or to say "I go to the Philadelphia Church of the Majority Text", or to say "I go to the Lithuanian Apostolic Orthodox Autocephalic Church of the Baltic union of 1838".
10. Ultimately, I am a Calvinist because I had no choice in the matter.
What we need in a leader is to tell us not what we want to hear, but what we need to hear.

What we need in a leader is to tell us not what we want to hear, but what we need to hear.

Fred's bounce earned him 4 points.
McCain 28 (+1 vs. last poll Jan 9)
Huckabee 19 (-5)
Romney 17 (+1)
Thompson 16 (+4)
Giuliani 5 (-1)
Paul 5 (nc)
The four point advance is only from Wednesday to Sunday. Another four days like that and he will be solidly in second.
So much depends on Romney taking out McCain tomorrow, otherwise, McCain will run away with South Carolina, I fear.

I think before there can be a resurge, there has to be a surge. This fascination with Fred Thompson and his low-energy campaign is a fantasy.
dipped down to about 8%, now has recently risen to 13%. That satisfies the linguistic requirements of the word.
As for the rest of that I say Bah! Humbug!

dealing with the lazy campaign stuff. Fred has simply not done things the way the elite MSM & punditry dictate, so they call that lazy. I guess if Fred did back handsprings down Main Street in every SC town those who go back to the "lazy" charge would continue doing so. I guess when attacking his policies & issues is foolish, attack something else. Will we hear about his "trophy wife" again?
Good poll bump, I pray the momentum will continue. What I've said all along is that Fred's message needs to get out, as well as his ability to communicate it. We saw this in the recent debate, & I hope there are more forthcoming that will showcase his talents & abilities. Fred's "product" is great - people want it - this "product" needs to get out to the people & it is getting out.
Yes - I'd say resurgent describes it. Eventually, the media is going have to start using the "F" word!

FREDucation is needed for the great folks of the Palmetto state and it sounds like they are getting that.
Fred is the only candidate that will bring us back to our Reagan Conservative principles, and those principles will win in Nov., make our country and our party stronger, and push back the forces of modern liberalism that threaten many of the things we love and hold dear.
