The Stupid Party

The following is my response to a message in Haystacks recent post.

Can anyone tell me why this is always the case, and what can be done about it?
______________
In my experience, it is always this way. For some unknown and unknowable reason the Republicans are ALWAYS the stupid party.
(1) Republicans will always lay low when being attacked
(2) Republicans will always give feeble responses even when they have good explanations
(3) Republicans will always show their hands when making deals with Democrats, and will always fold too quickly, even when they have the winning hand.
(4) Republicans will always turn against one of their own when he/she has a winning issue
(5) Republicans never seem to highlight, or campaign on controversial issues even when they have overwhelming public support.
(6) Republicans are never aggressive except when supporting things like earmarks and bridges to nowhere.
(7) Republicans are always quick to throw parts of their constituency under the bus.

That is why so damn many of us are sick and tired of the stupid party.

while saying nothing about Democratic complaints about "partisanship". When Democrats act in a "partisan" manner Republicans are silent.

This is exactly how I, a Democrat, often feel about my party! Perhaps we have some common ground after all...

Veritas magna est et praevalet.

I refer to them as the Evil Party.

as they both seem to be populated by (ahem) "politicians."

"Enlightened statesmen will not always be at the helm." -- James Madison

10. The Republican Party in general is comprised of schmucks!

of decent people -- which make up almost 20% of them!

"The United States was supposed to have a limited government because the founders knew governmental power attracts swarms of crooks, demagogues and despots as surely as horse manure attracts swarms of horseflies." -- Rick Gaber

You confuse Republican politicians with conservatives.

Republican politicians don't really want to win, which is why they seem to hate being in the majority and try so hard to give it away. They are really just panderers who have found a particular stand convenient to win votes from the constituency they represent.

Quite frankly, I'm convinced Republican politicians do not have any personal rock hard beliefs and many (most?) are quite liberal, which is why true conservative policies are so hard to enact. If you could get an honest answer from most long term Republicans, I am sure they would tell you they really don't have a problem with rampant spending, Drugs, illegal immigration, abortion, hard core porn and homosexuality - in fact they frequently like all of the above and would vote acordingly if they could get away with it.

As politicians, Republicans don't have a problem compromising, unless that endangers their position with their constituency - otherwise anything is fair game - as long as they can get credit for their votes against legislation the 'folks back home' oppose.

Conservative politicians are most often Republicans, but it is not accurate to say that phrase in reverse.

When you boil down the membership of the GOP then, there are few real conservatives in Congress. To get anything done, they have to be willing to compromise. Those that can do so, retain their core beliefs and stay in Congress are fewer yet. The rest leave or are sacrificed on the alter of expediency before they can get there(think Pat Toomey).

Folks need to wake up and do a reality check and stop confusing the Conservatives and Republicans. I know most who are here are both, so don't feel I'm shooting arrows at you - my aim is toward those in office.
