By KyleH
There is the law for most of us and then the law for the exalted people known as lawyers. Case in point: http://www.wwj.com/Fieger-Acquitted/2294075 . Fieger is one of the scum of the earth known as personal injury lawyers. Not content with that, he and his law partner cooked up a scheme to skirt election laws and funnel money to that other scum of the earth and presidential candidate John Edwards.

Posted at 11:01am on Mar. 10, 2008 The conservative dilemma with McCain
By KyleH
There have been a number of diaries from a number of people about conservatives sucking it up and not just voting for McCain but supporting him, enthusiastically. They throw out all sorts of straw men and red herrings such as voting for the lesser of two evils, anti-McCainiacs wanting the 'perfect' conservative (or another Reagan), etc. None of this works because these arguments are based on bad assumptions about McCain and his conservative opponents.

Posted at 11:56am on Feb. 7, 2008 The problem with McCain
By KyleH
What is it about John McCain that drives conservatives crazy (myself included) but also attracts a loyal following including independents and swing voters? I think Yuval Levin in NRO hits it on the head this morning. He says that McCain is an honor politician. In the past several days, I have had similar thoughts but couldn't come up with quite the right words. To fundamentally understand him, you need to know that McCain makes gut-level decisions not necessarily based on excruciating intellectual analysis. Because of his home environment growing up, his military experience, and the community where he lives, most of these gut-level decisions are in line with conservative views. This certainly explains his conservative record, however McCain is not a movement conservative. Conservatism is not the foundation for his decisions. His foundation is honor and these gut-level feelings. That is why he is an inconsistent conservative. This is also what bothers other movement conservatives. McCain certainly heads in the right direction most of the time, but he just doesn't get it. He does not fundamentally understand conservatism. He mostly follows it because it seems like a good idea.

Posted at 10:10pm on Jan. 31, 2008 Stop poking me in the eye
By KyleH
Since the Florida primary I have been considering writing an article on how I would hold my nose and vote for McCain in the general election. I have been holding off waiting for the results of super Tuesday with the small hope that Romney could pull off a miracle. However, I have read one too many snarky article and post about how I simply must vote for McCain in the general and how I had no choice unless I wanted Hillary to win. I cannot take it any longer. It is not enough that McCain keeps poking conservatives in the eye at every opportunity. Now the McCainiacts are following the lead of their glorious commander.

Posted at 11:05am on Jan. 15, 2008 Michigan primary personal report
By KyleH
Promoted by Jeff. Good stuff.
I voted in the Michigan Republican primary this morning before going to work. There was a little bit of snow overnight but it stopped by the time I headed out. In Livonia, a suburb of Detroit, we got about 1 to 2 inches. Weather reports indicate that snowfall was fairly spotty in the Detroit area. Some places got as much as 5 to 6 inches. The roads were in good condition although a bit slushy. Roads and sidewalks will probably melt by noon.
Not much activity at the voting precinct. There weren't even any campaigners near the entrance. There were no lines at the tables and maybe one or two other voters in the room. My ballot was the 25th cast so far today on the Republican side.

By KyleH
While we are basking in the glow of the new year and the just-finished Iowa Caucus it would be good to peek back at the 2006 elections. Let's remember a little history so we do not have to repeat it. As painful as it is to admit, Republicans got pummeled in 2006. We lost both the House and the Senate. Do you remember why? It is because our Republican representatives in Congress ignored the party's principles.

By KyleH
Things are looking better for our victory in Iraq. If the general trends continue through the end of this year, public opinion should also start to turn around. This is good timing for almost any Republican candidate in the upcoming presidential election next year. I am still worried, however, that we have lost some base support from war fatigue. Is there a way for our eventual nominee to win back some of these voters?

Posted at 10:13pm on Sep. 13, 2007 Democratic invasion plans
By KyleH
Just caught part of the Democratic response to President Bush. The speaker just replayed one of the Democrat's favorite talking points: The war in Iraq takes resources from hunting bin Laden. This idea is idiocy on top of stupidity. Most likely bin Laden is in Pakistan or less likely Iran. No Democrat except Obama has proposed invading Pakistan and they are pulling their hardest to prevent any fight with Iran.

The first primary vote is still a long ways away and the general election is even further. It is going to feel like an eternity if Republican candidates and their supporters (especially here on Redstate) resort to mudslinging and personal attacks. There is intelligent criticism and then there is the politics of personal destruction. For example, we can and should talk about polls that indicate which of our candidates might fare better against the Democrats.

By KyleH
So I am reading Instapundit when one entry jumps out at me, A $5 Billion Earmark?. It is a link to a Bill Hobbs post on travel expenditures at the Defense Department. It seems Norm Coleman (R-MN) is trying to stop a program at Defense meant to cut waste. Coincidently, one of the top travel agency companies is located in Minnesota and it's CEO has given money to Coleman's campaign. The article makes a compelling case, backed up by numbers, about the program saving money, but something smells fishy about these arguments.

Posted at 10:43am on Jun. 22, 2007 Health reform proposal 1
By KyleH
The first objective of conservative health care reform should be to eliminate any incentive for employer-payed health plans. It is vital that we put health care decisions back into the hands of each individual, the person most effected by this decision. This also needs to be done in a way that does not further complicate the tax code.
My proposal would be to eliminate all tax breaks for health care and cut the corporate income tax rate to compensate. It wouldn't hurt to cut it even further, just to be safe. After all a rate cut would help the economy anyway. For personal income taxes, the standard deduction would be raised to ease any new additional burden.

Hat tip: Club for Growth
It is not just that the king of propaganda slime, Michael Moore, has a new documentary on health care coming out called Sicko. Health care will also be an important issue in the presidential election next year. It is an issue that favors Democrats but doesn't need to. All Republican candidates should visit this site on a regular basis. The videos will intellectually blow you away. They have more than just anecdotes, too. They have hard numbers demonstrating that a government monopoly on health care like Canada's is a bad idea.

By KyleH
Hat tip Instapundit. Robert Cox has a very scary report on the Left, Google, and Wikipedia. I like and use Wikipedia but I would never trust it on controversial political information. I don't think the answer to this problem is to create a conservative version of Wikipedia, especially with the Google/Wikipedia connection.

Posted at 9:53am on Apr. 10, 2007 Coming to a shopping mall near you
By KyleH
After 9/11 my biggest fear was that Al-Qaeda would keep up the attacks on a smaller scale but with greater frequency. Sure we have increased security for the airlines (although there is a lot more work to be done there). Security has also improved at points of entry even though there is room for improvement in this area as well. There has been great security for big events like major sports and the Oscars. What I was more worried about (and still am) is lower profile places where still lots of people gather like shopping malls, movie theaters, and schools. Just imagine what a well-placed suicide bomber could do at a shopping mall during Christmas or in a crowded multiplex on a Friday night.

Posted at 1:14pm on Feb. 16, 2007 Paying the price
By KyleH
Our troops are paying a price for these Democratic defeatist resolutions and nonsupport of the Iraq war. More importantly, as gamecock has said so well, America will pay a heavy price if we loose Iraq. It should go without saying, Republicans who vote for these resolutions should pay a political price. (Democrats should pay a political price, too). We need to find, encourage, fund, and support candidates to run against those who vote against America's interests.
