I just feel the need, as a Romney supporter, to remind people that Hugh Hewitt does not, in fact, speak for the Romney campaign, is not on the Romney campaign staff, and Mitt Romney is not to be held accountable for Hugh's behavior. I know that sometimes it's hard, but it's important to evaluate the candidate based on who the candidate is, not based on the behavior of his supporters. I got a lot of material from the campaign itself both before and after the speech, and none of it was half as over-the-top as either of Hugh's post on the matter. Get that? The actual campaign material was a lot more sane. So like I said: don't hold them accountable.
Now, I have no opinion myself on the Romney speech. As I said, I haven't watched it and don't plan to. Lots of people certainly seem to think it was great, and so I think it probably was a pretty good speech. And if people want to be enthusiastic about the speech, that's also fine - I honestly hope that it helps move the needle for Romney. But you know what isn't going to help? Suggesting that everyone who didn't think the speech was the greatest piece of rhetoric in human history is drunk and is not to be trusted as an analyst anymore.
I really at this point have to ask if Hugh is capable of stepping out of his own shoes for a minute, reading his posts, and asking himself, "Is it at least possible that what I just wrote could bring even one person to support Mitt Romney?" Because I can't believe any reasonable person would answer that question "Yes." I just can't. In the alternative, I wonder if he is capable of asking himself, "Is it possible that what I just wrote could drive people away from supporting Mitt Romney?" I can't imagine any reasonable person answering that question "No."
Check out the comments to this post, and note who's commenting. Sometimes, it's helpful to heed your own advice. In this case, it would be especially helpful for Hugh to note the bit about what to do when everyone around you is suggesting you're intoxicated.
He lost me when he italicized the word "objective", and it appears I wasn't the only RomneyBot with the same response.
Ugh.

This one's gonna leave a mark...
I hate to demean Hugh in this way, but he is becoming like a Ron Paul supporter.
Ouch.

before you criticize Hugh's post on it. Rush has it right: Romney's speech raised the bar in this Presidential campaign because of its focus on the foundations of this great country.
Regardless of our preferred candidates, all patriots and believers in American Exceptionalism owe Mitt Romney a big KUDOS!
I'm not the biggest Romney supporter in the world, but I'm a Romney supporter. I've even sent a little cash his way. I agree with what you say here wholeheartedly. I've mostly stoppped reading Hewitt's blog because its just too sickening.
They that are with us are more than they that are against us.
He's not wrong that it was a great speech- but he's phrasing sure sets my teeth on edge.
Can someone please let Hugh know that the definitions of objectively and subjectively are not, respectively "agrees with me" and "disagrees with me."

until he started botting for Romney so obsessively. Now, I just read the headlines from Powerline News and then pass it by. I already know what his take is going to be--and him being so in the tank for Romney just kills any remark he makes about anything having to do with any of the campaigns. Leon, you're so right--he turns people off as surely as the Ronbots do for their guy.
