Attacking the Pope and Other Peaceful Pursuits

Recent remarks by Pope Benedict XVI once again have the Muslim population expressing outrage. In a sequel to Islam’s “cartoon scandal” they are upset about a portion of the remarks Pope Benedict included in an address at the University of Regensburg. He recanted the following lines of a conversation about the truths of Islam and Christianity between Byzantine Christian Emperor Manuel Paleologos II and a Persian scholar.

"The emperor comes to speak about the issue of jihad, holy war," the pope said. "He said, I quote, 'Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached."'
For repeating this historically correct articulation, Muslims and their religion of peace have once again found reason to riot. In a further display of their tolerance, Muslims around the world have condemned the Pope, burned his effigy and compared Catholicism’s representative of the “Prince of Peace” to Hitler. Here are some quotes from Islamic leaders:
Salih Kapusuz, a deputy leader of the Turkish Prime Minister’s party;
"Benedict, the author of such unfortunate and insolent remarks, is going down in history for his words," he said. "He is going down in history in the same category as leaders such as Hitler and Mussolini."
And this seemingly dichotomous statement from Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Tasnim Aslam;
Anyone who describes Islam as a religion as intolerant encourages violence,".
Realizing this outrage is developing, I searched for any statements which disputed the accuracy of this conversation or the history of conversion by the sword. I am also still searching for similar statements on the continued killing of Muslims, by Muslims in places such as Iraq. Accordingly, I have not found any but hope still abounds.
What can not be factually disputed is the history of forced conversion and this verse form the Quran, which has been used for centuries as one of it’s the underpinnings;
Then, when the sacred months have passed, slay the idolaters wherever ye find them, and take them (captive), and besiege them, and prepare for them each ambush. But if they repent and establish worship and pay the jizya (poor-due), then leave their way free. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
- Qu’ran, 9:5
Why is it the response from an alleged religion of peace always violence? Where are the "responsible" community leaders? I am not sure, but the current silence is deafening.
