By Mason Conservative

This is the kind of message that John McCain needs to be getting out there . . . rhetoric vs. reality. The rhetoric of Barrack Obama vs. the reality of McCain's entire career. For all the "change" that Obama's been promising, its McCain who has fought and won change over and over his entire Senate career.

As for Republican candidates across the country, this kind of campaign - for country - is one that all factions can rally around without being bound to some of McCain's more moderate views. If Republican candidates can attach themselves to McCain in the manner of his personal popularity. Make this about experience, about what the country will face with a president in training pants. We don't have to love McCain, we just have to respect him. In close Senate races with GOP incumbents (Sununu of New Hampshire, Smith of Oregon, and Coleman of Minnesota come to mind), McCain has the caliber of appeal that can help these three come across the finish line. In open races here in Virginia and in Colorado, McCain's kind of appeal can really help the brand and with two candidates (Schaeffer and Gilmore) who are coming from behind but are in traditional red states. Furthermore, its hard to link Schaffer and Gilmore to Bush because one retired in '03 and the other in '02

Posted at 10:51pm on Jun. 3, 2008 It Must Be McCain-Jindal

By Mason Conservative

I just finished watching John McCain speak in Louisiana, and the most startling thing I heard was McCain say that with him in the White House, there would be no permanent campaign that has existed in both the Clinton and Bush Administrations. But there is a real reason for that, because both were seeking reelection and in this era one has to start almost instantly because of the pressures of challengers now starting so soon. What I take away from McCain's statement is this could be his last campaign and he has no interest in framing him administration around running for reelection.

Posted at 9:21pm on Jun. 1, 2008 VA-SEN: Jim Gilmore's Acceptance Speech

By Mason Conservative

He's going to be fighter, thats for sure. Jim Gilmore is a working class guy, raised in the blue collar area of Richmond called "the Fan" and he's always run that way. Thats why he's always done pretty well with black and working class voters in the past. For more on Gilmore's past, the DCPost had a great article ten years ago when he was governor

Posted at 1:37pm on May 20, 2008 VA-SEN: Gilmore Talks To DCTimes

By Mason Conservative

I saw this today at work, a very long interview the DCTimes did with Jim Gilmore.  This is why I support Gilmore, he talks about national issues that a US senator will have to deal with.  As much as I respect Bob Marshall, his campaign has more resembled running for a statewide seat in the House of Delegates.  Notice we don't hear Mark Warner talking about these issues?  The key will be for Gilmore to break-through the "Mark Warner Is God" narrative that is out there and get him to answer some of these tough questions with real answers the same way Gilmore does. Gilmore's best line is this one:

Posted at 10:16pm on May 6, 2008 Great News From Herndon, VA (IMMIGRATION)

By Mason Conservative

As many know, a small national story erupted two years ago when the town of Herndon, VA in Fairfax County attempted to open a taxpayer financed day laborer center. In the ensuing election, pro-law candidate Steve DeBenedettis was elected mayor.

Well, two years later and after a contentious election where Mayor Steve was attacked for being a divider, I am pleased to report he was reelected by 52% of the vote in a three-way race. Its a small election in a small town, but its nice to see that even in the heart of blue Northern Virginia some sanity still exists.

How about this:

Senator Chris Mathews, D-PA?

What an absolutely HILAROUS idea! The idea of Chris Mathews catching what he has been throwing all these years? I wonder if the idea of running against Specter gives him a good feeling up his leg?

Posted at 6:16pm on Apr. 29, 2008 VA-SEN: Why I Picked Gilmore

By Mason Conservative

For regular readers of my blog, many know that I was not comfortable with Jim Gilmore's candidacy for the US Senate.  I boosted many candidates, most notably Eric Cantor.  But in the end, nobody stood up and I respected Gov. Gilmore for taking on a tough election instead of passing like several members of our congressional delegation (I'm looking at you Davis, Cantor, and Forbes).  So I backed Gilmore and I've resisted every attempt to go back on it.

Posted at 1:06pm on Apr. 26, 2008 Stupidity Out Of Rhode Island

By Mason Conservative

One of the most unlikeliest of heroes in the battle against illegal immigration has turned out to be Rhode Island Gov. Donald Carcieri. He has signed an executive order directing state police to crack down on the problem. FoxNews.com has a good article on the issue. In this article, I found perhaps the dumbest single quote ever attributed to anyone talking about this issue, uttered from the brilliant lips of Brown University professor Darrell West:

Posted at 10:53pm on Apr. 18, 2008 Virginia Is McCain Country

By Mason Conservative

John McCain 52%
Barrack Obama 44%

John McCain 55%
Hilary Clinton 39%
(SurveyUSA)

To say the least, this is good news. Nothing like a strong presidential candidate to bring the party back in the state. This could have important meaning for races up here in Northern Virginia. What has helped spark the rise of Democrats in Northern Virginia is a total disdain for George W. Bush, but John McCain is a different animal, and its clear the left doesn't know how to deal with him. Democrat leaders from Howard Dean on down are using the Bush Model in attacking McCain, because is all they know. They pick every small problem, and go after the Arizona senator guns-a-blazing, yet it doesn't stick. Why? Because John McCain is one of the most respected political figures in America. Secondly, criticism of McCain from Democrats somehow rings hollow after years of constantly praising McCain for his "independence" and "honesty." For them to turn around and suddenly attempt to recreate McCain as a Bush Boogeyman is simply improbable. Furthermore, McCain seems to be succeeding widely in uniting all of the party around him. I saw it personally on a local level last night over at the Fairfax City Mass Meeting. Everyone was please with McCain, and all the candidates and elects expressed the need to rally around McCain to get him elected. What these numbers are showing is the longer Hilary and Obama go at each other, the more it exposes their weakness and lack of qualifications - a stark contrast to the sterling record of John McCain and all his service to America.

Posted at 7:29pm on Apr. 16, 2008 VA-11: Good News For Keith Fimian

By Mason Conservative

The lastest FEC filings gave a shock to folks in the VA-11, now occupied by the soon-to-be retired Rep. Tom Davis. Many have given up on this race the moment Davis retired, but Fimian is starting to make believers out of a lot of us here in Northern VA. Here's Fimian's press release:

Fimian Fundraising Tops $838,000
(Oakton, VA) – In a statement released today, local businessman Keith Fimian announced he has so far raised $838,662 in his campaign to succeed Congressman Tom Davis in representing Virginia’s 11th Congressional District.

Posted at 7:38am on Mar. 5, 2008 John McCain/JC Watts - A Ticket For History

By Mason Conservative

John McCain has six months to unite the party, create a national team, and win in November. His first step should be announcing the selection of former US Rep. JC Watts as his running mate. In one fell swoop, he solves a number of problems. He's a young black man as compared to McCain being an old white man. Watts is an entrenched conservative across the board, a marriage that make sense with McCain's maverick style. Watts comes from a red state and can help keep those states in McCain's corner.

Posted at 8:09pm on Mar. 3, 2008 VA-SEN: Meet Bob Marshall, Conservative Upstart

By Mason Conservative

There is an upstart in the Virginia Senate race, and his name is Bob Marshall. A member of the House of Delegates since 1992, Marshall is a bit of gadfly in Virignia politicis, but amiable and interesting. He might be one of the few politicians to claim support from the Club for Growth and the Sierra Club. But to say Bob Marshall is conservative is a vast understatement. He is unequivicolly anti-tax, pro-life in every situation, and anti-immigrant. He is for victory in Iraq and for balanced budgets. The man is a one-man wrecking grew in the House of Delegates, oftentimes taking lonely conservative positions. But in the last week, Delegate Marshall had a boon!

Posted at 9:40pm on Feb. 25, 2008 California Dreaming

By Mason Conservative

Could Republicans find an unexpected oppurtunity in California in 2010? While perusing around SurveyUSA's site, I came across and interesting poll:

Do You Approve Or Disapprove of the job Barbara Boxer Is Doing As US Senate:
Approve: 45%
Disapprove: 44%
Not Sure: 11 %

Okay. Do I think Republicans can stampede into California and elected Duncan Hunter to the US Senate? No. I am under no illusion that California is, and remains, very blue. And no, I am not advocating Arnold Schwarznegger to run for the Senate (though I think he might), but could this be an oppurtunity (finally) for one of our great young Republicans to take a stab? I understand that California Senate Races is where Republicans go to die, but I don't know. Boxer has already announced her reelection because of these porous numbers. And despite there politics, there is a difference between Feintein and Boxer. I have relatives in California who, though staunch Republicans, have told me that there is a perception difference. Somehow, Feinstein is more "senetorial," while clearly but this poll a majority of Californians seem to think Boxer is not. Two name immediatly springs to mind: Reps. Kevin McCarthy and John Campbell.

Posted at 9:54pm on Feb. 18, 2008 Obama's Not A Plagerizer, But . . .

By Mason Conservative

There is a great point that people seem to missing about this recent bruhaha over Sen. Barack Obama's choice of words. Its not that he plagerized . . . trust me, as someone who actually went through strict scrutiny over my writing while in graduate school, I know what real plagerism is. Its actually pretty clear, the purposefull theft of ideas, text, and other writings without proper citation or credit. I saw some people get in real serious troube over this, and it was something I was constantly aware of while writing history papers. Obama was using the words of a close friend, Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick . . . its not the same. Was is sloppy, perhaps, but his words are so vague that its really not a big deal. Its also an incredibly pathetic move by the increasingly pathetic Hillary Clinton, who's team of dirty tricksters managed to find an essay Obama wrote in kindergarten. How unerving would it be if your political opponets were able to find something you wrot ein elementary school? Hillary's dirty trickers would make Richard Nixon blush.
