MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) -- Somali troops backed by Ethiopians prepared to launch a major assault Friday on the last stronghold of Islamic movement militiamen.U.S. Navy warships were patrolling off the Somali coast to prevent the militiamen from escaping by sea.
The Somali and Ethiopian force captured a southern town near the Kenyan border Thursday evening. Col. Barre "Hirale" Aden Shire, the Somali defense minister, said Islamic militiamen were dug in with their backs to the sea at Ras Kamboni at the southernmost tip of Somalia.
"Today we will launch a massive assault on the Islamic courts militias. We will use infantry troops and fighter jets," said Shire, who left for the battle zone on Friday. "They have dug huge trenches around Ras Kamboni but have only two options: to drown in the sea or to fight and die." (See map)
Somali government and Ethiopian troops routed the Council of Islamic Courts militia last week, driving them out of the capital and their strongholds in southern Somalia. The Islamic movement had wanted to rule Somalia by the Quran and some of its leaders had been linked to the al Qaeda terrorist movement.
Got that Mr. President. You might want to invite the Ethiopians to the White House while you are considering your "options" in Iraq.
Forget about balancing the ethnic people in Iraq. Let's heavily arm the Kurds and let them run the country. They are the most friendly to us and they have done a decent job in their area.
and a NATO country. Arming the Kurds would definately be a plus for us if you only consider Iraq. They seem to be a good and decent people who are mostly friendly to us. But they have their own terrorist groups operating in Turkey and the Turkish government would take a VERY dimm view of us arming them.
One of the balancing acts the Bush administration is currently engaged in is providing SOME support for the Kurds while not making them strong enough that the Turks feel compelled to invade northern Iraq.
Socialism doesn't work. It looks nice on paper, but it's been tried and it's failed miserably every time (usually accompanied by widespread death and suffering).

in the last two weeks, and the amount of international news coverage was reasonably good, or at least easy to follow without going to everyone's Page 2 and beyond. It reminds me of such times over the years as the Chad war, when the Libyans were rapidly driven back to the border, and the time late in the Yugoslav war when Croatian troops routed the Serb militias.
I hope everyone noticed how quickly Kenya sealed its border upon request, as there was no argument about why.
Also, eventually, we'll learn more of just what the contributions of our own forces in that theater are, as they pursue a few Al-Qaeda fugitives contained among the Islamic Courts camp.
Better just to defeat the enemy than stand around debating if we dare add a few more troops. But I will admit the Eithiopians have a great advantange, there is actually someone they can hand the country too that does not want to destroy it.
Notice they are not on the ground or sitting in any "Green Zone"? That's one of the major reasons this has gone so well;
- No reports of atrocities
- No reports of prisoner abuse
- Civil war? Well okay this is already one
- Stringers? Anyone?? No takers sorry
- UN troops. Oh, only after the shooting stops (and payola)...
- No Red Cross, lawyers and prison serving roast duck

Nobody but George Clooney gives a rats patoot about Darfur. Plan on at least a million dead from starvation and Islamic butchery. The UN will do... N.O.T.H.I.N.G. except perhaps pass a resolution blaming the situation on the US and Israel.
Remember Rwanda. This won't be any different in outcome.
