Huckabee supporters second choice is McCain by 2 to 1

this alone should be enough for Romney to drop out. I've been saying this for two months and I've had to listen to talk radio say Huckabee supporters will go to Romney. Talk radio needs to admit they've been wrong about this.

McCain wins over Romney as the second choice of Huckabee voters by more than a 2 to 1 margin, 64% to 28%. Indeed, McCain beats Romney 42% to 24% with Huckabee in the race (Huckabee gets 18% of the vote, Ron Paul gets 5%, and Alan Keyes gets 2%). With a narrowed-down ballot focused just on McCain and Romney (forcing Huckabee voters to choose between the two front-runners), McCain wins 53% to 30% -- a slightly expanded margin
Also, a great post from Joe Carter.
I knew this was over after Florida. I knew talk radio was wrong about Huckabee staying in the race up until Super Tuesday. Seriously, how can Romney stay in after reading that McCain is the second choice of Huckbaee supporters by 2 to 1, and seeing how he has no chance in the South? He's toast, I think he'll drop out later today.
Truth be known, McCain is actually stronger than he appears, even in the primary. And Romney is weaker, much weaker, than people give him credit for.
In fact, I thought McCain outpolled Romney for Huckabee supporters something like 60%/40%. It's even worse for Romney at 64%/28%.
I know it's not going to happen but at this point Romney should just give it up. I was saying last night that if he did not win at least 40% of the California delegates there is no reason for his candidacy. To my shock, Romney may not have even won 10% of the delegates.
it looks like McCain will get more than 90% of the California delegates. Romney needs to drop out today. I know Huckabee is strong in Texas, and will probably do better than Romney in Ohio and Pennsylvania.
and that Mitt is done.
(I did not hear this myself, just passing it on.)
I support Governor Mike Huckabee for President.
As for me, I don't like Huckabee and hope that McCain does not make the mistake of choosing him as the VP. I hope he looks at JC Watts or Mark Sanford.
As far as the experts go, I keep hearing that, as a Rudy guy, I would be flocking to McCain now that Rudy is out of the race. Well, unfortunately my primary is not until Tuesday, so it's becoming less of an issue, but if the race is still being contested I will vote for Romney (although I'm not exactly thrilled about that choice either).
Unless Rush was saying he like Hucakbee as a person and is still not suporting his candidacy, if what you said is true then Rush is on "drugs." A bad thing to say about him, I admit, but in this case it holds true.
For one thing, for just about every "non-conservative" (and I am being nice) thing McCain has done, Huckabee has done worse. From amensty for illegal aliens (Huckabee supported state-funded scholarships for them), to takes and spending, Huckabee is to the Left of McCain. Being honest, I think when Fred Thompson called Huckabee a "pro-life liberal" was pretty accurate.
Huckabee is charming and amusing and a great campaigner but on any objective level I fail to see how Rush could support him based on principles or ideology.
Romney is the only candidate who articulated an understanding of what this country faces in the very near future. Straight talk is not coming from Huckabee or McCain.
We have exported our national wealth to the extent that we are in a crisis. Romney said the situation is not a blip, but a very real consequence of policy and practice and that we are in a serious decline.
What have you heard from Huckabee and McCain?? Bulls--t.
You will get what you deserve.
Romney is a fraud. The South did not vote against him because of religion but because he is a fraud. He was against the NRA, then he was for them, and lied and said they endorsed him (a lie he repeated last week after knowing it was a lie) and that is one area amongst many. The man cannot tell the truth.
Smokymtman, Romney is no fraud. Please, look at what McCain did to campaign finance reform. Fraud? He is too stupid to know that George Soros played him like an Opry fiddle.
McCain has been sucked in so many times, he should have a conehead.
Romney is smart and sees the big picture. Much better to have his hands on the reins that anyone else. He has equivocated less than Huckabee and McCain, and that is on the record.
I pity us all. The next 4 years will be ugly.
he lost every state where he spent time with others: Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Florida. He lost the entire south to date, and he lost the big states in California, New York, and New Jersey. He's the second choice of Huckabee supporters by 2 to 1. The only state he won where other people actually spent more than a few days was Michigan, and that was only about six days, and that was because he has roots. Does he really think he'll win in Texas, Ohio, and Pennsylvania; where McCain and Huckabee will have more time and money to compete? I'm trying to be fair to Romney, but the fact ia he's a lot weaker when you consider the places he won and the amount of time other candidates had to campaign in the state.

The number of "analysts" who have said that Huckabee is taking votes from Romney is a great indictment of our system of "experts." The data has clearly showed that Huck supporters go to McCain about 2:1. McCain would have won every Huck state (except probably WV) if Huck had dropped.
It would have gone from 9-7-5 to 13-8 if Huck wasn't there and it would have been a landslide in GA, AL, TN and OK.
Romney is only (barely) viable because Huck took 100 delegates from McCain.
