Ronald Reagan had the Reagan Revolution. George W. Bush had Compassionate Conservative. And now, John McCain has Common Sense Conservative.

While outlining his likely White House run at the GOPAC and Federalists Society Dinner, John McCain referred to himself and his ideas as common sense conservatism. In short, we need to bring back the economically sound beliefs of Ronald Reagan, the robust military principles of Teddy Roosevelt, and the democratic aspirations of Abraham Lincoln.

It should be no surprise to any readers on who I support for 2008; however, my support does not go unjustified. In fact, our reasons for supporting John McCain were only solidified, if not exemplified in the last month.

Everyone will conclude that election 2006 was a disaster for Republicans. Exit polls show that voters were upset with the war and scandals. In 2004, Republicans got substantial support from Independents. That support appears to be gone. Moderates that voted for Bush in 2004 switched to vote against him. The National Journal shows that in the 10 most competitive Governor and Senate races the Democrats won the moderate vote in every one. Warning flags should be raised: reliable states such as Virginia, Florida, and Arizona were ground zero for GOP upsets. In each of these red states, the Democrats won the moderate vote by at least 15%.

A very recent Mitchell Poll (esteemed MI pollster Steve Mitchell) inexplicably has Dick DeVos narrowing Granholm's lead to a mere 2 points, 44%-46%. Factoring the margin for error and this thing is tied late in the fourth quarter.

One must wonder, though, how did DeVos narrow the gap? MFM strongly believes that there is a correlation between DeVos's sudden increase in the polls and the new McCain/DeVos ad that has been running all weekend. Check out the ad at the link above. If DeVos can edge this one out, one must really take a hard look at just how great McCain's popularity is here in Michigan as the lasting impression of Michigan voters will be John McCain publicly endorsing Dick DeVos.

You know it's election season when John Kerry begins to put his foot in his mouth. While addressing a group of college students, Sen. Kerry told them they'd "get stuck in Iraq, if they didn't work hard in school."

Kerry later said the remark was a "botched joke" meant to target the president, not U.S. troops.

In return, John McCain demanded that Sen. Kerry apologize to the "thousands of Americans serving in Iraq, who answered the country's call because they are patriots and not because of their deficiencies.

Much has been made in Utah and Massachusetts about the Mitt Romney Team possibly violating election laws, not too mention the ethical implications it may have. Because these recent events will no doubt be brought to light again in 2007/2008, let's recap the events and try to make sense of it all:

According to the Boston Globe, the Romney Team met with Mormon officials on September 19, 2006 to discuss a national network of Mormons to boost his presidency. One of the Mormon officials is the Mormon Church apostle Jeffrey Holland. Their apparent goal was to tap the alumni network of the BYU Business School for a future presidential run.

Today, Straight Talk America announced that its Michigan Young Leaders council that will play a large role in McCain's 2008 campaign. The 27 members all currently or previously held leadership roles with their College Republican party at their university or within the CR infrastructure. Not to mention that the Young Leaders council is composed of the majority of the CR executive board at University of Michigan, Grand Valley State, Ave Marie Law School, and Kalamazoo College. A few notable signings include Dan Carlson, the chair of the Michigan Fed. of College Republicans, and Mike Flory, the chair of the Michigan Fed. of Young Republicans. Given the prestige and leadership skills that come with their positions, this could be a much underappreciated signing. As the chair of the Michigan Fed. of College Republicans, Dan has the experience of handling and coordinating thousands of CRs, which will come in handy with Get Out The Vote. The Michigan Young Leaders council will provide the McCain team with the best College Republican networking team.

Despite accusations circulating the internet, Senator McCain has not changed or adopted a new stance on gay marriage. John McCain has always personally been against gay marriage. In November, Arizona will vote on a proposal that will change the AZ Constitution to ban gay marriages and deny government benefits to unmarried couples. McCain has come out in full support of the proposal, and has met with and offered advice to the proposal's supporters. For the record, it was the first time he has wholeheartedly endorsed an AZ proposal.

In regards to possibly losing the Senate to the Democrats in a few weeks, Senator McCain jokingly compared that to committing suicide.

"I think I'd just commit suicide," McCain told reporters, to accompanying laughter from Republicans standing with him. "I don't want to face that eventuality because I don't think it's going to happen."

At a rally for Dick DeVos for the 9th District Republican Party in Michigan, 89 grassroot activists held a straw poll to gauge the 2008 Republican presidential field.
The results were as follows:

McCain 44 49.44% Brownback 18 20.22% Tancredo 14 15.73% Allen 12 13.48% Romney 1 1.12%

“Senator McCain continues to dominate unscientific straw polls among the Oakland County based 9th District GOP committee and Tancredo and Brownback also scored well,” said 9th District GOP Chairman Glenn Clark.

An adviser for Senator Hillary Clinton spoke to Maureen Dowd, and remarked that McCain was "wound up looking similar....the way he did on those captive tapes from Hanoi, where he recited the names of his crew mates."

This is a despicable act that was immediately rebuked by McCain's political strategist, John Weaver: "I never expected the Clintons or their allies to know much about Vietnam. But [it] is disappointing to see one of her spokespeople purposefully lie about John's war record and time in a Hanoi prison camp. There was no such tape recording; though he did once give up the starting lineup of the Green Bay Packers while under extreme duress. Senator Clinton's spokesperson does a disservice to all who were there and served so bravely and honorably."

McCain still holds his lead in New Hampshire Presidential primary poll against Romney, Guiliani, and Rice.

The poll asked Democrats and Republicans in New Hampshire who they would vote for in the primary in 2008. Among likely Republican voters, John McCain had 32%, Rudy Guiliani had 19%, 15% for Mitt Romney, and 10% preferred Condi Rice.

In a press conference earlier today, Senator John McCain accused the Clinton Administration of a failing to protect the world from North Korea. In two-party talks, President Clinton pushed a framework agreement that gave BILLIONS in food and energy assistance to North Korea, however, this money was used to help enrich uranium and feed the army. In addition, Sen. McCain called on Sen. Hillary Clinton and her allies to immediately support accelerating missile defense, as opposed to blocking it, as has been the case in the past.

Regrettably, Sen. Debbie Stabenow is getting the better of Bouchard. She has a huge war chest and a comfortable lead in the polls. Nevertheless, Senator McCain's presence will provide a spark, and hopefully jumpstart the campaign to victory. McCain brings his straight talk town hall-style of campaigning that helped him win several primaries in the 2000 Republican Presidential elections against overwhelming odds.

The barrage of signings continues for Senator John McCain in Michigan. Today, Straight Talk America announced 24 Michigan Republican grassroots leaders to form Straight Talk Michigan's Grassroots Leadership Team. The new team members feature two MI GOP vice chairmen, the MI GOP secretary, four GOP district chairmen, thirteen county GOP chairmen, and three statewide elected officials.

"We are building the strongest Republican grassroots political organization that has ever been organized in Michigan," said Michigan Republican Party Vice Chairman Gerry Mason. "Although most of us supported George W. Bush in 2000, we are working very closely with Senator McCain to help elect Republicans in 2006 and beyond."
