By Mike D in SC
I tried to find a way to attach this blog entry to RedState Sports, but there doesn't appear to be a way for lowly me to do that, so here it is.
While listening to Fox News this morning, I heard them discussing the entry of Toyota into the NASCAR Nextel Cup, and the reaction Toyota might get from red blooded American NASCAR fans. I haven't yet found anything online from Fox News on the subject, but here is a related MSNBC article. (Sorry, I know that MSNBC is about the most politically biased "news" source on the net, but I'm leading up to a point made by Fox on the air, but not by MSNBC.)

Posted at 8:48am on Jul. 20, 2006 Rest in Peace, My Beloved Wife
By Mike D in SC
Drinda Ann Dayton, my beloved wife of 15 years, passed away this evening at the Palmetto Baptist Hospital in Columbia, SC. The probable cause was a pulmonary embolism related to her recent surgery. She was 48.
Drinda was a veteran of the United States Army. She loved babies, horses, dogs, cats, and all manner of critters. She loved Christian music, Celtic music, and Harley Davidsons. She was a staunch pro-life Christian conservative, and a fan of George W. Bush. She was an organ donor. She loved the military. And above all, she loved her two children.
Drinda is survived by her loving husband, two loving children, Brian, 14, and Shandril, 12, her parents, one grandmother, one brother, one sister, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. She is now united in Heaven with her two brothers, Mark and Ruston, who predeceased her.
Memorials in her name may be made to National Right to Life or Soldiers' Angels.
Prayers from my RedState friends are most welcome.

Posted at 9:49pm on Jul. 10, 2006 Democrat Hypocrisy: Tom DeLay/Robert Torricelli
By Mike D in SC
From the diaries, by Erick . . .
Back in 2002, Robert Torricelli was running for reelection to the US Senate in New Jersey. However, as that election year wore on, an election year that saw Torricelli "severely admonished" by the (Democrat controlled) Senate Ethics Committee "for breaking Senate rules and displaying 'poor judgment' in accepting gifts from a campaign contributor", it became more and more clear that the tainted Torricelli was becoming unelectable. Then, a mere 36 days before the election, Torricelli dropped out.
There was only one catch, though. New Jersey law explicitly said that the ballot could not be changed within 51 days of the election. A lawsuit was filed, Republicans pointed out this law, and Democrats argued that it ought to be ignored, and that Torricelli ought to be able to have his name removed, and that New Jersey voters deserved to have a choice between candidates of both parties.

Posted at 1:06pm on Jun. 23, 2006 This is what happens when Bush wiretaps Americans
By Mike D in SC
The Sears Tower continues to stand. And the thousands of people who work there continue to go home to their families after work every day.
Forbes confirms that five of the seven terror suspects arrested in Miami for plotting to destroy the Sears Tower in Chicago were US citizens. The Miami Herald confirms that they were subjects of wiretaps.
The government eaves-dropped on private conversations of American citizens. The government spied on those same citizens. And the outcome? America's tallest building saved, along with thousands of lives. But will the Democrats finally acknowledge that wiretapping terror suspects was the right thing to do? Will Senators Durbin and Obama thank the President for saving their landmark, and those lives of their constituents? Don't hold your breath. You can bet that Congresswoman Pelosi will still want to impeach Mr. Bush.

Posted at 7:22pm on Jun. 13, 2006 More MSM Bias
By Mike D in SC
CNN reports today that former Atlanta Mayor Bill Campbell was sentenced to 30 months in prison for racketeering and tax evasion. Thing is, they never got around to saying what party Campbell belongs to. This omission is a virtual guarantee that the party is Democrat. And here is virtually conclusive evidence that he is indeed a Democrat.
We all know that if any Republican were in the same circumstances as Campbell, the word "Republican" would appear prominently in the first paragraph, along with extensive quotes from Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid on the Republican Culture of Corruption™.
But since he is a Democrat, CNN feels that we don't need to know that information. After all, they are your "Need to Know Network".

This has got to be one of the strangest announcements I have read in a long time:
McDonald's Games Division To Leave Parent Company
"We can no longer stand by while McDonald's corporate policies help lead the planet to ruin," said Andrew Shimery-Wolf, co-director of the former Interactive Division.
Here is a link to the address given today by Shimery-Wolf.
So, McDonald's Interactive is seceding from McDonald's because McDonald's is destroying the world with global warming by selling too many Big Macs. I knew tht Big Macs would destroy my figure, but the planet?

Posted at 3:56pm on May 9, 2006 How can NYT reporters be so clueless?
By Mike D in SC
Here is a link to an article entitled, "Ohio serves as microcosm of the national political war". It's a link to IndyStar.com, but it carries the NYT byline of Adam Nagourney and Ian Urbina.
Can someone here tell me how a couple of NYT reporters can think to write a credible analysis of Ohio's 2006 elections without even once mentioning the name of Ken Blackwell? You'd think, with their standard bias, that they would at least try to link him to Taft's corruption, but to completely ignore him? To completely ignore the candidate who, if he wins, will be the first ever black GOP governor in the US?
A fair analysis would point out that Blackwell bucked the state GOP and spoke out against Bob Taft's corruption (not that I expect the NYT to be fair to any Republican, especially a black one). I would think that these actions would greatly enhance his stature among disgruntled GOP Buckeyes, and his chances of winning. But Nagourney and Urbina completely snub him.
I think Blackwell has a great chance to win, and will be a fresh breath of conservative air for Ohio. And I think that the NYT is not even fit to be used to housetrain dogs.

California Democrats once again are providing incentive for businesses to locate elsewhere by working to enact a state version of the Kyoto Protocol, which would force businesses in the state to reduce "greenhouse gas" emissions to 1990 levels by 2020.

Posted at 12:30am on Mar. 20, 2006 South Carolina may pass an abortion ban
By Mike D in SC
But not soon.
The State reports today that the South Carolina legislature may try to pass a law, similar to South Dakota's, banning nearly all abortions in the state, but that it will not happen before 2007. The article reports that Tennessee and Mississippi are ready to pass such bills, but in South Carolina the legislative calendar for 2006 is too full. The article also states that the priority is lower because the number of SC abortions has dropped by about 50% since the 1988 peak.

Posted at 12:44am on Feb. 25, 2006 Moonbat Sighting in South Carolina
By Mike D in SC
A rather strange "news" publication arrived unbidden in my mailbox today, called "The Democrat". It is editted by none other than Michael Ray Ellisor, the most recent Democrat nominee for South Carolina's 2nd Congressional district (currently represented by the Honorable Joe Wilson.)
First, the disclaimer:
This publication is not affiliated with any political party.
Yeah, right. In bold, after the editorial: "Vote Democratic", and in an unsold ad space on page 8: "The Primary Difference between Republicans and Democrats. Republicans try to Outlaw American Values. Democrats fight to Preserve Them."
The paper claims a circulation of 4000. That must be how many mailboxes they stuffed it into, and now I guess I am included in their count. But we don't have a bird cage, or a puppy to train, or any fish to wrap, so I have no use for it.
The entire paper reads like one of the more juvenile Kos diaries, less the profanity. The "news" articles were all standard moonbat talking points, but the most entertaining item for me was Mr. Ellisor's editorial. (I'd love to link to it, but apparently Mr. Ellisor can't afford a web presence.) Some of his gems are listed below.

Posted at 1:13am on Jan. 28, 2006 House Staffers Rewriting Wikipedia
By Mike D in SC
Here's an interesting article from the Lowell Sun. Seems that Congressman Marty Meehan (D-MA) didn't like what his Wikipedia entry said about him, so he had his staffers delete the article and replace it with one more agreeable to him. A couple of the things he apparently doesn't want you to know about:
Matt Vogel, Meehan's chief of staff, said he authorized an intern in July to replace existing Wikipedia content with a staff-written biography of the lawmaker.
The change deleted a reference to Meehan's campaign promise to surrender his seat after serving eight years, a pledge Meehan later eschewed.
It also deleted a reference to the size of Meehan's campaign account, the largest of any House member at $4.8 million, according to the latest data available from the Federal Election Commission.
Part of the old version, referring to the term limit pledge:
"Meehan first ran for Congress in 1992 on a platform of reform," the pre-edited entry said. "As part of that platform Meehan made a pledge to not serve more than four terms, a central part of his campaign. This breaking of the pledge has been a controversial issue in the 5th Congressional District of Massachusetts."
New version:
"Meehan was elected to Congress in 1992 on a plan to eliminate the deficit. His fiscally responsible voting record since then has earned him praise from citizen watchdog groups. He was re-elected by a large margin in 2004."
The new version sounds a lot like campaign puffery, and should rightly belong on Meehan's own website, not Wikipedia, which strives to be politically neutral.

Posted at 11:28pm on Jan. 13, 2006 A Comparison of Headlines
By Mike D in SC
I noted on Google News today that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has decided not to halt the execution of Clarence Ray Allen, who will turn 76 next week, the day before he is scheduled to die. Allen was convicted of ordering the murder of three witnesses while already serving a life term for a previous murder.
Google News is interesting because it presents headlines from multiple sources for the same story. It was particularly interesting in this case, because the headlines clearly illustrated the spectrum of bias for or against the death penalty of the headline writers.

Posted at 6:02pm on Dec. 20, 2005 Media Bias Quantified by UCLA
By Mike D in SC
I want to apologize in advance for posting a diary that is little more than a link to an interesting article, but I am pressed for time, and I thought that this article ought to be brought to the attention of you kind folks at RedState.
UCLA has completed a study of ten years worth of output from twenty major media sources, and has used a rating system similar to the one used by Americans for Democratic Action (ADA) to rate how liberal lawmakers are, with 100 being most liberal, and 0 being most conservative.
UCLA took steps to give the appearance of impartiality, including refusing outside funding, and using a group of research assistants who were evenly split in their support of either Kerry or Bush in last year's election. They also omitted all opinion pieces from the study, as they are biased by definition.
The results are in some cases surprising. Even Drudge was found to lean left, along with the Wall Street Journal, once the opinion page is removed.
The three most liberal:
The only two who leaned right:
Please feel free to discuss.
