The French are up in arms lately. Apparently a judge decided to grant an annulment to a groom because his bride turned out to have misrepresented herself as a virgin. (The French take their rights to promiscuity very seriously.) You can read the story here:

The bride and groom in this case are Muslims, and as we all know Islam has some very strict rules when it comes to morality. While there is a significant difference between Islamic morality and Christian morality (for example, Christian morality does not permit politically advantageous beheadings), there is also a great deal of overlap.

While Democrats argue about how much to increase taxes, and Republicans argue about whether to replace the current system with a flat tax or a fair tax, there is another idea I think merits consideration.
Why should the federal government tax individual citizens at all? My idea is to amend the Constitution to have the federal government instead tax the states.
This is a workable system: Every state is already set up with its own tax collection system. Washington could tax every state based on it's GDP, and each state could decide for itself how to collect taxes not only for its own budget, but also for the federal burden imposed by Washington.

Well, I just worked through my taxes last night. I am reminded again of why I need to escape from this oppressive state.
Believe it or not, my Minnesota state income tax burden is more than three times larger than my federal income tax burden. Yeah, you read that right. Combine that with some of the higher property tax and sales tax here, and you arrive with Minnesota being among the 10 most tax happy states in the union.

As I'm sure everyone has seen by now, the bright cheery page that is Google has gone dark today.
Are they doing pennance for collaborating with the Chinese Communists? No.
Are they predicting a stock market crash? No.
Those silly people at Google are trying to get your attention for "Earth Hour":

On a whim I directed my browser to dailykos, mostly for laughs. There on the front page is a cutesy little "Who won the week" poll.
Having been inspired by Rush's "Operation Chaos", I thought I'd click the button for Hillary to help her out. Not surprisingly, it turns out Bobama is far out in the lead.
A subscription is not required. Anyone care to help me sow a little mayhem?

With Mr. O surging recently, some Republicans have thought it prudent to cross the great divide and pull the primary lever for Mrs. C. Even Rush, suggesting that his listeners might want to thusly dance with the devil, indicated that "The strategy is to continue the chaos in [the Democrat] party."
And chaos it may very well be.
With the Texas race looking very close, there could be consternation on the left as to whether or not Hillary won because of the Republican crossover vote.

I just got back from our local precinct caucus. We heard letters from the candidates. We voted for our favorite candidates in a straw poll. And we elected delegates to the State Senate District conventions.
Turn out was great! We had at least 10x as many there this year as in 2006, which is understandable.
Our precinct straw poll heavily favored Romney (with the help of some underage straw-pollers) with Paul leading the second cluster.

I never had a chance to vote for Ronald Reagan. I was 14 when he was re-elected. My first vote was cast for George H.W. Bush with the naive expectation that he would be just like Reagan.
That was the last time I actually voted FOR a candidate with the expectation that he would win.
In 1992 I voted for Bush 41 again but it was actually a vote AGAINST Clinton.
In 1996 I voted for Bob Dole (again, against Clinton) even though I wanted to vote Libertarian.

This is the first website I've really frequented that deals with political issues, and I'm pleased to find a place to share ideas with fellow conservatives. It surprises me, though, to discover such a large spectrum of philosophies that are now labeled conservative.
The labels "conservative" and "liberal" have meant different things in different times and places as applied to political philosophies. Therefore, to be specific let's discuss conservatism in America, circa 2008.

As everyone knows, there is an (apparently)* unwritten rule stating that contributors with un-seasoned accounts may not mention a certain candidate for the Republican nomination. This is a very good rule, and has helped keep the nuttiness at RedState to a dull roar; the idea being to keep RedState from becoming port of call for bloggers attempting to impersonate a spam-bot.
I would like to propose to the site administration that contributors who were supporting candidates who have since dropped out be given an exemption from this rule. It seems apparent that if one can reasonably support one candidate, one is not likely to go nutty in support of another.

Why do people support Huckabee? Because he is CONSERVATIVE where it counts to them: socially. They overlook his liberal fiscal tendencies, but they support him because of his conservative side.
Why do people support Giuliani? Because he is CONSERVATIVE where it counts to them: fiscally. They overlook (or embrace, for some) his liberal social tendencies, but they support him because of his conservative side.

Back in 2000 the South Carolinians' choice was between a "compassionate" conservative and a moderate conservative.
McCain received 42% of the vote.
Tonight the South Carolinians had to choose between a moderate conservative, a social conservative, a true conservative, a new conservative, a libertarian, and a fiscal conservative.
McCain received 33% of the vote.
I think it's fair to say that McCain didn't so much win tonight as conservatives split their vote and lost. United we stand, divided we fall.

I've been meaning to write this diary for a while, and since I just threw my back out this morning while putting a tarp over my woodpile, I'm not able to do much else.
There has been much talk of the Reagan Coalition lately, and some speculation as to whether it will crack up and be replaced by something else. Attempting to replace the coalition of social, fiscal, and military conservatives would be a huge mistake. Our coalition is not some random alliance of special interests. The Reagan Coalition WORKS because each of the members is logically consistent with the others. In fact, each of them is logically derived from the same first principle. That principle is the Rule of Law.

Lately I've seen several articles by hyperventilating FredHeads convinced the sky is falling. I've even had to shore up wavering FredHeads here in my local BPOU. Yes we have our concerns. Yes it is frustrating to see clearly what so many of our fellow conservatives don't. It is truly maddening to hear people engaging in "strategic voting".
But I want to ask you, fellow FredHeads, do you trust Fred to know what he's doing? If you think he's making such bad strategic decisions that you feel the need to bother his campaign with warnings of doom, do you really think he'll do well with strategic decisions once he's in the White House?

If memory serves, it was just a few months ago that Rudy Giuliani was being trumpeted as our own version of the candidate of inevitability. Social conservatives were being told to overlook his support of abortion (and his personal life) and trust that he would appoint strict constructionist judges. "It's the GWOT, stupid!" we were being told.
Personally, I can't think of a better way to get out the Socon vote than to prop up a social liberal as the front-runner. What did we expect, that the Socons would stay home and take their medicine?
