Sistani tells Shiites to protect Sunni brothers
BAGHDAD, Nov 27 (KUNA) -- Leading Shiite cleric in Iraq Ali Sistani Tuesday banned the killing of Iraqis, particularly the Sunnis, and urged the Shiites to protect their brother Sunnis.
Sistani bans the Iraqi blood in general the blood of Sunnis in particular. His announcement came during a meeting with a delegation from Sunni clerics from southern and northern Iraq.
...
"I am a servant of all Iraqis, there is no difference between a Sunni, a Shitte or a Kurd or a Christian," Al-Mulla quoted Sistani as saying during the meeting.

"Ali Sistani" and the wikipedia entry lists "Sayyid Ali al-Sistani" and states that he is an Iranian cleric who is regarded as the most renowned figure in Shiite Islam.
I'm sticking with my position that the original author of the article made a typo when he wrote that "Ali Sistani" is in Iraq, as opposed to Iran.
I agree that the Iraqi's respect him. But I don't think he's an Iraqi.

Shiite in Iraq and arguably the most important and powerful leader of any kind in Iraq since Saddam fell.

and owes all of his influence to the legacy of his father. I don't think Sistani has any use for him.
and they have Grand Ayatollahs, the cream of the crop. Ali al Sistani, who has been in Iraq since forever and who was one of the very few Iraqis with whom the Bremer-ites bothered to consult because of his power, is a Grand Ayatollah. Grand Ayatollah Mohammed Mohammed-Sadiq Al-Sadr was both another Grand Ayatollah and Mookie's father. He was murdered by Saddam in 1999.

But I thought that Moqtada al-Sadr was the "leading Shiite cleric" in Iraq and that Ali al-Sistani was the leading Shiite cleric in Iran.
I checked your link and it appears that you have accurately quoted the article.
Am I missing something? Or did the author of the article confuse Iraq with Iran? (It's easy to do; perhaps the British should have given Iraq a more distinctive name at the Cairo Conference).
