DAY TWO PART ONE
It was late when we got in last night and I was unable to post. When we arrived to the campus of Iowa State University, I was pleased to see that it is a lovely place to hang out. If you don’t mind living in Iowa, you may want to check out Iowa State as a potential school. The area is small town, but otherwise it’s very nice.
Everyone was setting up tents when we arrived. It looks like a carnival. There are many rides, including a ferris wheel. I think our campaign may be the only one that has a climbing wall. The Fox News truck is here and today the grounds are buzzing. I’m getting ahead of myself, though.
No one was around last night when we arrived, so we headed to dinner and then met with other campaign folk to head to FORT BROWNBACK. Pictures may be found at http://www.brownbacker.com . We were disappointed to hear that only 20 or so people were expected. Sam was in Des Moines and whether or not he would make it by the 8:30 call time was up in the air. However, the crowd got larger and larger and larger.
Between 50-60 supporters came and we waited to see what would happen. News cameras as well as print media arrived. Bottled water flowed as everyone fed off of the excitement of others. We were excitement parasites. The rally began and a dark SUV pulled up. Don’t get me wrong, this was no typical entourage. From the front seat, Sam was beaming and waving like someone who hasn’t seen his best friend in years. He got out of the truck and the place exploded into cheers of “Brownback! Brownback!” Being an introvert, I faded to the background to observe.
Senator Sam Brownback gave a heartening speech with not one word of smack-talk towards the other candidates. To say it was refreshing was an understatement. When the speech ended, he immediately started talking to people. Not in the “hugging and kissing babies” way most politicians do. Yes, people wanted pictures, myself included, but Sam took time to genuinely speak to everyone. It’s just how he rolls.
Soon, he headed to the front of the crowd to introduce Norma McCorvey (of Rov v. Wade) and Bobby Shindler (brother to the now deceased due to idiots Terri Schiavo). I hadn’t realized that they were here to support Sam. Both will be speaking today at the rally. When all had been properly addressed, Sam headed to the crowd again. I was immediately greeted by Senator Brownback who looked delighted to see Leon again. He was warm and kind and set to make me at ease when I made a bad joke about the flashes from cameras possibly giving both of us seizures. He laughed and made a comment about how you get used to it, but he’d never considered the possibility before of it happening.
Later, as the crowd was slowly thinning, I realized I hadn’t had the time to ask him the most important question I had. Yes, there were several incredibly thought-provoking ones my friends wanted me to ask him, but there hasn’t been time for that. I walked up to him again and said “Senator, I have an important question to ask you.” His eyes were wary and I realized that he must be incredibly exhausted with all the questions people ask of someone in his position. It must be comparable to the “WHY?” you get from a 5-year old on a consistent basis. I grinned and said “Coke or Pepsi?” His eyes twinkled and he gave me a smile like we’d been friends forever. “Ohhhhhhh, I’m a Coke man myself.” He’s a good man.

that Brownback will actually win? I myself was looking at Brownback early on when he was courting evangelical support. Back before Romney or Fred Thompson had entered the race. But I now see Brownback as a guy who has almost no chance of winning.
Not because he isn't sufficiently conservative or because he doesn't have loyal supporters. Just because, for whatever reason, the grassfire never happened.
I invite all pro-life voters to look at Romney's RECORD and judge for themselves whether or not he can be trusted on judicial nominations.
We've already seen what kind of judges Mr. Giuliani puts on the bench. I would submit to all pro-life voters that they can have a conservative, pro-life president in either Governor Romney or Senator Thompson. But do not submit to the Giuiliani hype. He has never been one of us and does not even claim to be one of us now.
