Impeach Bush? Go For It

At least that's what The Anchoress says. Responding to His Holiness Al Gore's new book and to some nonsense from Joy Behar of The View, Anchoress writes that we should finally give the hard left what it wants: let's start impeachment proceedings against President Bush and get everything, everything, out in the open. I tend to agree with her that impeachment proceedings against President Bush would be better for Republicans than for Democrats, which is precisely why Nancy Pelosi has taken impeachment off the table despite the demands of the hard left and voters in her own district who voted in 2006 for a nonbinding referendum that called for Bush's impeachment.

Read on...

Think about it. What's the worst that could happen? There are really only four possible scenarios:

1) The Democrats try and fail to impeach the President. They waste Congress' time and the taxpayers' money on impeachment proceedings instead of doing the business that they were elected to do. Even if Bush's poll numbers plummet further, congressional poll numbers are likely to fall even lower. Meanwhile, the President, the Cabinet, and the Executive Office are able to score some political points as they debunk each and every one of the Democrats' outrageous accusations.

2) The Democrats try and succeed in impeaching the President. He leaves office and Vice President Cheney becomes the new President of the United States. Given Cheney's solid conservative record, he will likely continue pursuing victory in Iraq and may refuse to compromise with Democrats on some of the issues that Bush has expressed openness toward. Democrats will fail to meet any of their goals and will be faced with an administration even more hostile to their policies.

3) Upon the initiation of impeachment proceedings, Vice President Cheney tenders his resignation and President Bush nominates a new Vice President (perhaps Condoleezza Rice or, even better, perhaps his pick for 2008). Faced with pressure not to stage what would amount to a bloodless coup, the House and the Senate would confirm the new vice presidential nominee and he or she would become the new President of the United States in the event that Bush is impeached and convicted. Given that President Bush is unlikely to nominate any Vice President who won't continue most of his policies, it would be almost certain that Democrats would face a negative outcome.

4) Worst case scenario: the Democrats impeach and convict both President Bush and Vice President Cheney, and Nancy Pelosi becomes the next President of the United States. In her limited time as President, Pelosi begins signing into law all of the darling pieces of legislation passed by the Democratic Congress. Americans quickly begin to see the impeachment of a Republican President and Republican Vice President by a Democratic Congress for what it would be: a bloodless coup and a complete renunciation of the democratic process. Fed up with Pelosi's socialism and angry over the bloodless coup, Democrats lose the White House, the House, and the Senate to Republicans in 2008 by a landslide and the Democratic Party, the oldest political party in world history, fades into oblivion.

Yes indeed, I say let the impeachment proceedings begin.

Impeachment would not be wasting the taxpayer's money. It would be a cost savings. While they're fiddling with impeachment, they're not passing spending bills.

CongressCritter™: Never have so few felt like they were owed so much by so many for so little.

After the Nancy Pelosi ascends to the Presidency, the Senate Democrats go nuclear and outlaw the fillibuster. Nancy signs an Amnesty bill that allows all immigrants, legal and otherwise, to vote in Federal elections, along with making D.C. the 51st state, a new "Fairness Doctrine" for the airwaves, carefully crafted hate speech laws, a "new and improved" McCain-Feingold act, plus lots of strategic pork, thereby gerrymandering a permanent Democrat majority.

And Rightly So!

After the slime the democrats employed to keep even the modest reform of using ID in texas elections from becoming law, it is clear that the democrats are not operating in good faith regarding elections in this country.

I shudder to think what the Dems would do if they successfully staged a coup like the one outlined.

I have no doubt in my mind it would be our own 1933. Your list is just the mild version of what they'd do if they thought they had no limitations on themselves anymore.

There are two words that keep the dems from trying to impeach Bush: President Cheney. :-)

Well, that and the fact that he has done nothing illegal.

...that this is a major factor. Democrats would rather stick with the devil they know. They have no idea how much harder a line Cheney would take on the issues that Bush has shown some willingness to compromise over. For example, the minimum wage increase: my suspicion would be that Cheney would veto it, whereas Bush has expressed his openness to signing it.

that impeachment would hand the Republicans not only the White House but both houses of Congress. This is really common sense. President Bush is not on the ballot next time, and the Democrats would be impeaching a President in the middle of a war. Talk about reckless. Any downturn in the war would be blamed squarely on them. If you think impeachment hurt the Reps in 1998, you have no idea what this would do. That is why it isn't going to happen. The Dems are not that absurd.

Take the threat of impeachment over a policy dispute off the table.

If that happened the whole country including democrats would win. (Even though they would never admit it)

Good post. However, what makes you think they would suddenly start defending themselves - after 6+ year - against outrageous accusations?

Given this Administration's track record on that score, the president probably would condemn opponents of his impeachment.

Republicans won't do!

Their options would be to defend themselves or be forced out of office. I recognize that the White House has so far been unwilling to defend itself, but I think the prospect of actually losing the White House would motivate them. At the very least, it would motivate their supporters in Congress.
