By Oscar98
I've noted before that I'm not a fan of calling terrorists "Jihadists." This article from the AP is about 3 weeks old, but indicates that the Bush Admin (finally) agrees with many info ops practitioners such as the US Army Special Forces.
Don't call them jihadists any more.

Posted at 7:07pm on Feb. 17, 2008 "Small-l" libertarians... have you checked out the RLC??
By Oscar98
This is obviously not for every fiscal conservative out here, but if you're definitely a fiscal conservative, Club for Growth kinda Republican, you might lean libertarian, too...
Just a little outreach video here to see if anyone is interested in the RLC. Granted, the readers of this website are relatively savvy political folks. So you may not be hearing anything new.
The video is Phil Blumel, secretary for the Republican Liberty Caucus(RLC) of Florida, introducing a group of the new Ron Paul supporters to the RLCFL, its purpose and mission in the Republican Party. Like Ron Paul or not... the Republicans need libertarians now more than ever, in my opinion.

This may have been on here before, but U.S. Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX), a former national chair of the Republican Liberty Caucus, has opened an exploratory committee and is considering a run for the Republican nomination for president of the United States.

By Oscar98
Little Ice Age, Big Chill. I recommend this show tonight. It is on right now, amd will be back on at Midnight EST.
Okay, so the last 15-20 minutes of this 2-hour show are Global Warming hysteria. However, when you're listening to one of the doomsday Global Warming gurus on the radio or TV and they are proclaiming that last year was the hottest year on record, 400 years, a millennium, yada yada yada... out to 10000 years even?

Posted at 10:40pm on Nov. 16, 2006 Post-Election Fair Tax Scorecard...
By Oscar98
From the Fairtax.org website:
In the entirely normal historical sea change that changed the majority party in Congress, the public has signaled a desire to change national direction. Some FairTax supporters lost -- primarily on other issues -- and some won. One national Republican strategist opined that the Republican party lost because it did not embrace the FairTax. Other pundits have written that the Democratic majority will not grow if the new leadership does not reach out to the center with issues that can unite the country. We believe the FairTax is that issue. The simple truth is: the FairTax is good for all. It is also true that we cannot repeal the 16th amendment or win the FairTax without the support of both Democrats and Republicans. Now is the time to take our message to the new Democratic majority while still embracing those Republican leaders who have brought us this far. Here are election results that, while disappointing to some, should tell us that the FairTax has a newly important and relevant political meaning: the potential to unite the nation for the good of all.

Posted at 12:08pm on Nov. 10, 2006 Ronald Reagan on Libertarianism
By Oscar98
For those who just want to cast aside the libertarian wing of the party...
I posted this 1975 quote of Ronald Reagan from Reason Magazine on another blog. But, it is worth repeating.
"If you analyze it I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism. I think conservatism is really a misnomer just as liberalism is a misnomer for the liberals–if we were back in the days of the Revolution, so-called conservatives today would be the Liberals and the liberals would be the Tories. The basis of conservatism is a desire for less government interference or less centralized authority or more individual freedom and this is a pretty general description also of what libertarianism is.

Posted at 2:49am on Nov. 1, 2006 Just Win, Baby! Steele, Allen...
By Oscar98
From the Club For Growth...
Chances for the biggest upset of the year rose yesterday in Maryland where GOP Senate candidate Michael Steele gained the endorsements of six prominent black Democratic Party leaders in the state's most vote-rich Democratic county.
Before the endorsement Steele was an average of just 5 points behind in the last three public polls. He now may have the credentials he needs to make big gains among black voters who comprise about one-quarter of the electorate statewide. This is a huge coup for Steele. If he wins, he would become one of just two black Senators.

Read columnist Scott Burns article in support of the FairTax below, and then send your vote by e-mail to scott@scottburns.com. Put “Go for the FairTax” in the subject line. Scott will be tallying the responses, so add your voice to the national chorus in support of the FairTax! He promises to report results of his national straw poll later.

Posted at 1:03am on Jul. 15, 2006 Crush Hizballah
By Oscar98
Israel may have to damage some Syrian Air Bases to protect their flank. But, I don't believe Iran can really come to their defense right away, nor will they. And the Arab states won't support Syria (outside of a little talk), as they consider Syria an Arab traitor siding with the Shiite states of Iraq and Lebanon.
Crush Hizballah, and Prime Min Fuad Saniora's Beirut government can finally marginalize the Islamist group. Crush Hizballah, and Israel shows the Middle East that they still have big balls of steel (and weapons to back you up). Crush Hizballah, and Israel can know their northern border is protected, and if their soldiers are not returned, they are avenged. Crush Hizballah, and Israel can focus on the Hamas threat again and get back to business with Palestinian Pres Abbas. Most importantly, Crush Hizballah, and Iran's influence in the Levant is severely degraded. Crush Hizballah...
I believe that is what Olmert is thinking, and he may be right.

Posted at 5:52pm on Jun. 20, 2006 Republican Liberty Caucus... Fight from within!
By Oscar98
Reference: http://www.rlc.org/
I had a post about the RLC over the weekend, but who's online during the weekend. I actually sent a check to the Libertarian Party earlier in the year. Thankfully, I found the RLC, and that was my only check. Great place to go for info on Liberty-minded Republican endorsements. I especially like the Liberty Index on the website. The Republican Liberty Caucus Supports (and my thoughts on the positions):
Lower and fewer taxes (hell yes)
The right to privacy (for the most part)
The right to keep and bear arms (yes)
Balanced budgets through spending cuts (hell yes)
Educational choice (hell yes)
Freedom of speech (Yes, even for the idiots)
Protection of property rights (hell yes)
Market-based health care (hell yes)
Alternatives to the drug war (I haven't decided, but there's plenty fo pressing issues before this)
All-volunteer armed forces (hell yes)
Term Limits (Yes)
Sound monetary policies (well duh)
Deregulation (yes)
Phase-out of foreign aid (maybe)
Ending federal welfare (yes yes yes)
Private options to Social Security (of course)
Free trade Privatization of government functions (Of course... contract out everything)
From the website:
If you hate "Move-On.org", remember that the RLC enjoys the same 527c exemption: you can contribute (even a corporation can contribute) any amount to the RLC, which may be used to support any RLC endorsed campaign.
Here's the website for the PAC

Posted at 1:14pm on Jun. 17, 2006 The future of the party?
By Oscar98
I know many of you are aware of the Republican Liberty Caucus. Others are not. I toyed with becoming a Libertarian for awhile about 6 months ago. Even to the point of throwing a very small amount of money toward the Libertarian Party one day. Then, I found these guys... and remembered that 3rd parties are a waste of time and money, except in certain local arenas (and not mine- VERY red state here in the military heavy Gulf Coast of NW Florida). The only way to win is fight from within. Just in case some of you haven't heard of these guys, take a look at the site and see if you like it. Cheers!
Also, just want to remind folks about these cats:

Posted at 7:38am on Apr. 15, 2006 My formerly conservative friend...
By Oscar98
How do I reel him back in? Some background:
- You'll have to take me on my word that my friend that I'm concerned with used to be a Republican lean. We went to high school and college together in SC, and it was a very conservative bunch we ran with, as well.
- I remember plenty of conversations about our dislike of Clinton, though he always took pride in viewing everything as a "centrist."
- He was a McCain supporter during 2000... every time Bush is discussed, all conversations seem to devolve back to how McCain was apparently treated by the Christian right in SC that year. -- Honestly, I'd moved away b/c of the Air Force by that time, and had been a registered voter in another state for 2 years, so I know nothing about what happened. He's the only person from home that I ever here speaking about this, but the most of my other friends are all proud Red Staters.
- He has always been Pro-Choice (I did not know this until recently) and pro-secularism. I'm definitely undecided on both of these issues, but I don't let them (especially abortion) define my voting record. Anyway, I actually know a lot of Pro-Choice Republicans these days.
- Despite these last 2 bullets, he was always right leaning, though "independent."
BUT NOW...
I about broke the chair I was sitting in last weekend when he called the US "a theocracy under the Neo-Cons."
He says there is no such thing as a biased MSM. He says that Fox is a bunch of Right Wing hacks, but Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann, and John Stewart are his favorite news sources, more or less.
- Listen, I won't deny that Fox is conservative, but no one is out identifying the above mentioned as left wing biased reporters/entertainers.
He watched (and liked) Syriana.
His wife now has taken on the "pride in moderate" model as well, which counters her upbringing.
He says the only way to be moderate in SC is to vote Democrat. He may be right, but I could give a damn about being moderate, if I'm wrong.
Alright, this guy is one of my best friends. I want to bring him back in, but the last thing I want to do when I get home and finally hang out with my friends is argue over politics. Like I said, every discussion about Bush breaks down into him trashing the "Theocrat" or whatever happened in SC in 2000, Katrina, Bill O'Reilly, "tricks to bring out the Christian Right through Gay Marriage votes in '04," or whatever talking point you want to use. One of my other friends says our buddy still likely voted Bush over Kerry, but I really am unsure of this.
Domestically, I'm far too Libertarian to be a huge fan of Bush, but I appreciate what he has done in the War on Terror, I appreciate his service as my Commander in Chief, and feel the media is cutting his legs out from under him. More and more, my independent friend is a microchosm of all that I believe is wrong with how this country views this war we are in. I think we could start helping people by marginalizing guys like Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann, but they've already cornered the market on marginalizing the right with biased reporting.
Wow, this is mostly a non-sensical vent, but I have no clue how to help my friend fix himself.
