Breaking -- McConnell shuts down the Senate

McConnell has shut down the Senate over the judges issue by forcing the clerk to read the whole 500 page global warming bill aloud.

I'm listening to it on CSPAN2 because I'm a geek.

Why couldn't more Republicans do stuff like this more often?

For another recent example see the farm bill. And who's holding the Dems feet to the fire on military appropriations? Oh yeah, nobody.

I could go on with this list all night but I'll stop here.

Leading backers of the bill -- Environment and Public Works Chairwoman Barbara Boxer and Sens. Joseph Lieberman, D-Conn., and John Warner, R-Va. -- offered a new 492-page version today that Democratic aides said makes only minor modifications after the latest Congressional Budget Office analysis. But when it was offered on the floor, Republicans objected to Democrats' request for the clerk to dispense with the full reading of it, a common request done by unanimous consent. "I think this is an opportunity for us to learn what is actually in this legislation," Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, said after Boxer interrupted the clerk's reading with a second request to move on. "Right now they're just stalling this bill, stalling this important debate," Boxer told reporters as the reading by the clerk continued on the floor. A spokeswoman for Senate Minority Leader McConnell said the move is also in protest to an impasse on judicial nominees. "The Democratic majority has refused to honor its commitments," McConnell said in a statement today. "It apparently believes that commitments do not matter in the United States Senate, and that actions do not have consequences."

Boom!

This bill would cost tax payers millions and I hope it doesn't pass.

I do, though, feel sorry for the clerk!

And now, Mitch, back to you! And a big hello to Barbra Boxer.

I love it when Californians, and particularly the Hollywood types, lecture the rest of us on environmental issues and the evils of technology.

Why is it that no one has pointed out that Los Angeles and San Diego are cities full of green lawns and air-conditioned houses IN THE MIDDLE OF A DESSERT? The power and water that make those cities possible come from half a continent away.

Am I the only one who thinks this should happen with every bill in both houses of Congress? It'd give them far less time to keep screwing things up.

It's not just you. Count me in.

Unfair. Unbalanced. Unmedicated. -- IMAO

But it's not enough to just read the bills ... the entire House or Senate should be required to be on the Floor when the bills are read!

Hey, if we can't pass term limits legislation, that'd be the next best thing.

Maybe then some of our Congrescritters would know what was in the bills that they voted for.

Now also found at The Minority Report

As I recall that's why the Senators girl had to take him out.

That's probally when the changed the program it dawned on these crooks that reading the bills was a bad thing.

Gee ... I didn't know Congresscritters had to read! From all those who claim "I didn't read it" ... or the obverse, "the opposition did not provide enough time to read it," one would think that Congress is illiterate.

Oops ... maybe they are.

The reading is by the clerks. But if the Congresscritters are around, then they can hear the text being read. Not to mention some bored press people might also listen or look at the text and might even write up something original. Then our representatives and media consumers might just possibly learn something about the content of these bills.

And pigs might learn to fly to. Oh well, one can only hope. But at least one might slow down the trains on their way to the trainwreck...

And Rightly So!

Has the GOP Senate leadership been replaced with alien clones???

Let's see how long they keep up the heat. My prediction is that our side will fold like a house of cards once the Dems go to them and promise that they will be nice if we only stop.
Then they will go right back to holding up our judicial nominees and our side will say they are shocked, yes SHOCKED that the Dems would go back on their word.

Sorry, I just don't believe we will hold firm, but I will wait and see like everyone else.

Kudos to McConnell though. It's about damn time!

Which is to say in the vernacular of the young, "Bout freakin' time!"

Don't know what has gotten into Mitch, could it be that he has gotten the message the NRSC and NRCC refuse to listen to?!

Enjoy it while it lasts. Hope he has the fortitude to keep it up forever.

Regards

When they do good deeds, we need to encourage them and thank them for their efforts.

Done!

and tell your like minded friends to do the same. It helps our elected Rs out when they hear from folks outside the beltway.

Guys, come on. I know we all have every right to be cynical at this point, but this is a great thing and let's support them rather than knock 'em down.

Great comment Tim.

The Hill reported that Boxer stated Republicans are trying to float through their judicial noms to "re-energize" the Conservative base. Oh boo-hoo Barb, I know, how awful to be trying to get judicial openings filled when there is CLIMATE CHANGE to discuss.

Senator McConnell just got a thank you note from me.

Just like a puppy who has been pooping in the house for the last week, you still need to reward them when they do it right...it's the only way to correct the behavior, unless you want them always pooping in the house!

as he did when he tried to stick the ANWR drilling into a bill a couple of weeks ago.

Shoe is right, when we sit back while one of our own tries to do the right thing, they will think they are not making a difference.

From my ANWR post " Wouldn't it be great if Sen. McConnell's office spent the next three days digging out from the thank you emails and calls?"

Regards

It's still being read. Muahahaha.

Thankfully for the clerks, there are more than one and they rotate off.

And Dingy Harry is lecturing us about why we lost seats in LA and MS. Whatever the reason we lost those seats, it wasn't because we stood up for nominees.

Mitch... Do it again tomorrow!

Regards

Rewarding good behavior is a good thing when done in moderation.

Good job Sen. McConnell.

thanks Oz for bringing this to our attention.

As best as I can tell, short of an event that affects the Kentucky race uniquely (for example George Allen), Mitch McConnell is far enough down the list of likely changes in party that if the Senate Race in Kentucky is extremely close, then this indicates that 1) the national mood is such at Senator Obama has a landslide victory *and* the Democratic Caucus has gotten up to 60 (perhaps even without Lieberman).

I really believe the most recent Rasmussen poll is an outlier.

Even my Florida Sen. Martinez is a member of the AGW cult. Along with our Governor, don't they know that high energy prices will destroy the tourism business? Guests cannot afford to get here, tourist places will have huge increases in energy costs (can you imagine Disney's electric bill?) Tourist tax revenue dries up, and state income tax starts, and we all leave to go to..??

Our family just spent a week in Philly, and visited Lancaster county in PA. The Amish there may be the most sheltered from the energy crisis. Perhaps relocating to Indiana or Ohio into the expanding Amish world is in our future.

appear to be ready to vote "Yes" for this horrible bill. They are being pressured by green groups who will never support them in any election any way.

These senators need to hear from people telling them not to support this. The last thing we need is republicans supporting this massive takeover of the economy. It gives cover to the lefties pushing this stuff.

Shouldn't the bills be read in all 28 languages that are used for ballots? Why keep people who speak some obscure but official language in the dark? Don't we need for ALL voters to be informed?

I wrote the Senator and thanked him for the good work and asked him to continue pushing the judge issue.

-Ronald Reagan

I wrote the Senator and thanked him as well. I also encouraged him to keep up the good work and start applying some tactics to get us drilling and refining again.

These legislators don't have time to read, what with all the BS pouring from their lips who has time.

They don't listen to the citizen unless its something they like or want to hear. I mean you wouldn't want them to be interrupted because their lips are always flapping.

As a mere citizen I thought reading was supposed to be done by their loyal staffs and clerks ?

My 2 cents

Howzabout gettin' them to listen to the bill now?
